All I have heard at work and in the press for the last few weeks is Love island this and love Island that. Is it really that important when there are so many other issues that really do affect us.

I have heard one comment about it this morning. I am so pleased.

What the hell makes such a program with vacuous self loving people so important anyway

It’s good entertainment in a depressing world.

skippy67 · 31/07/2019 14:00

I really enjoyed it. Bit sad it's ended, even though it had started to run out of steam in the last week. Looking forward to the next series!

FraggleRocking · 31/07/2019 14:05

I believe a BBC article said something along the lines of ‘The people quickest to criticise Love Island are those who haven’t actually watched it’.
I was persuaded by a friend and colleague to give it a go a few years back. Is it quality television - no. Is it entertaining escapism - yes!

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 31/07/2019 14:06

Its just trash telly to switch off to,sometimes you dont want to think and need some light relief

TanyaChix · 31/07/2019 14:06

If you watched it (properly so that you really understood the dynamics of the individuals and their relationships) maybe you’d get it. It’s one of the most watched TV shows, meaning media coverage is more comprehensive. It’s a bit of a myth that everyone on it is thick (this year there was a lawyer and a pharmacist with a masters, for example. Last year there was a doctor and an engineer). It’s also a myth that anyone who watches it is brain dead. Lots of my friends who are highly educated enjoy it as some light relief. My husband hates it, but he’s a very logical, fact-driven person who likes serious documentaries and I’m fascinated by psychology and relationships so perhaps that’s why.

The Guardian explains the popularity here: www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/jul/28/nosheen-iqbal-love-island-reality-television-itv-teenagers

UnicornCat · 31/07/2019 14:07

Well now you're talking about it again so you're feeding into the hype too🙄

It's just light entertainment, nothing to get your knickers in a twist for!

WorraLiberty · 31/07/2019 14:10

I don't watch it and never have but I think you're coming across as miserable here.

If people enjoy talking about it, I don't see the problem.

By 'press' do you mean the tabloids? They thrive on that sort of thing anyway.

ThomasFurious · 31/07/2019 14:13

year there was a lawyer and a pharmacist with a masters, for example. There was an oncology vaccine specialist, an engineer, some one with a biomedical degree, as well as the pharmacist and someone training to be a lawyer. Also three professional sportsmen.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 31/07/2019 14:16

I've never watched it so can't really comment but it does dominate Digital Spy when it's on!

I did watch the clip where the women were discussing geography and trying to work out where Rome and Barcelona were and whether Rome was in Italy or vice versa (or something like that) so I hope they're all more switched on in their professional careers than they are in general knowledge!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 31/07/2019 14:17

Every single teenager I teach watches it religiously and it's all they talk about when it's on.

Excited101 · 31/07/2019 14:24

Ah, well I love it! Luckily it’ll be back in the new year- were going to have 2 series’ next year, sorry op!!

MysweetAudrina · 31/07/2019 14:26

Ha I love that you started a thread that keeps attention on it. Myself, dh and dd watched it and had great chats about acceptable behavior etc..

Ohbehave1 · 31/07/2019 17:25

Obviously I am in the minority here. I have seen a couple of episodes and thought it was just another program feeding negative body image and was not really what relationships are about.

And @WorraLiberty - when it's all you here people waffle on about for weeks it gets kind of boring. Almost as bad as football bores.....

OpheliaTodd · 31/07/2019 17:29

Serious question - if there are so many educated people on it, why is it that their conversations make them sound thick as mince?

skippy67 · 31/07/2019 17:40

Yeah, that's a really serious question...

spam390 · 31/07/2019 17:44

AMEN to that !

Bloody pointless show !

In my opinion, if you have to watch that show to find out what happens, you either have no life, or are too thick to understand basic psychology!

A programme for the young and immature with absolutely NO redeeming features at all.

skippy67 · 31/07/2019 17:54

I don't have to watch it. I choose to. And I do have a life ta.

ItsAllGoingToBeMagnificent · 31/07/2019 17:57

It’s a bit of light entertainment, I don’t see the issue. My mum always questions how I can watch such rubbish, easily, that’s the point! It’s a bit of escapism.

spam390 3 psychology degrees and love it, probably no life though Grin.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 31/07/2019 18:04

I watched it. It just entertainment. I also watch many other things that highlight real issues but I don't want to watch those things all the time.

TheRLodger · 31/07/2019 18:17

Yabu I had to look at the tv times for the first time in ages last night as I didn’t know why was on at 9pm. And quite frankly it was all crap on.

Also the fact that the mn love island thread got to #27. And if you read any of them the conversations which were had in them were not just superficial. And we had conversations which ran a lot deeper than that.
Of the all the people slating the show just curious how many of you have actually watched an episode.

PixieLumos · 31/07/2019 18:31

I tried watching it last year. It was ok, but then I missed a few episodes and lost interest. It’s on every night for nearly 2 months! I just can’t commit to that.

StupidlittlepricknamedRick · 31/07/2019 18:34

I gave up with this series. I think it would be better if it was just bog standard members of the public rather than insta celebs. Its like when big brother went downhill by having semi famous z listers instead of your average joe.

PookieDo · 31/07/2019 18:34

I enjoyed it.
No one spoke about their bodies on it to be honest, a lot of it was cheesy light hearted fun. There were various girls of different body shapes and same for men, I think they all wore nice clothes and had nice hair and make up for some of the filming but they also showed them just woken up, hair a mess etc so it wasn’t all vacuous idiocy

I think some of it was interesting. I wanted the couple who won to win too

Vilanelle · 31/07/2019 18:48

Ironic that you've started a thread about it!

I only watched last 2 seasons. I hated the concept of it and was angry dp put it on but I got sucked in.

CarolDanvers · 31/07/2019 18:55

YABU. I'm just hoping they're going to start showing LI USA here...
