All I have heard at work and in the press for the last few weeks is Love island this and love Island that. Is it really that important when there are so many other issues that really do affect us.

I have heard one comment about it this morning. I am so pleased.

What the hell makes such a program with vacuous self loving people so important anyway

Here in Ireland, once Love Island UK finished, Love Island USA started. I haven’t seen any of it bar the opening few minutes.Though to be honest, I didn’t watch LI UK either, but saw snippets of it on YouTube. I watched the first two series of BB when it started all those years ago and, after spending two summers glued to the TV, I decided I’d resist any other summer reality programmes after that. (Luckily The Apprentice and MKR Australia aren’t summer programmes Grin)

P.S. Maura’s accent would have driven me mad if I had been watching!

It's popularity explains Brexit and Boris!

Unless you have actually watched a tv show how can you say it’s shit Confused
There is a lot on tv that I wouldn’t bother with but as I’ve never watched eg The Kardashian’s or Made in Chelsea how can I say it’s shit? I loved GOT (game of thrones) and so many commented on FB pages “so glad this is over, I’ve never watched an episode” eh what? People are strange 🤷‍♀️

Really? I thought Brexit and Boris were the result of decades of socio-economic disenfranchisement of the working class combined with a concerted effort by the far right to exploit deprivation by stoking up unfounded fears about immigration, but maybe I'm wrong.

I don’t think it’s good enough to start a thread about. That is to say, it’s far too shit to even talk about.

And tbh I’m surprised that so many on here watch it. All about the objectification of people where only the body beautiful are allowed on, to the extent that none of the applicants actually get through, the contestants all say that they were approached rather than the other way around.

And let’s not forget that there have already been two suicides off the back of this programme.

If this is what people view as light entertainment then it says far more about the society we live in, and none of it positive.

There was a time when celebrity meant someone who had an actual talent, maybe a musician, a film star that kind of thing. Now the more vacuous you are the more likely you can become a celeb.

Unfortunately as advertising revenues continue to dwindle we’ll see more and more of this. Not only are these programmes dirt cheap to make, but they also invent a new set of ‘celebrities’ to fill up even more hours of cheap television. TOWIE gave ITV endless hours of filler for two bob and a toffee apple in its own right - but then on top of that it gave them Mark Wright hits Hollywood (and then ends up on the Matalan advert), Sam Faiers gets up the stick, Gemma Collins gets a bit thinner and then a bit fatter again etc. That’s before you even consider how many spaces in I’m a Celebrity, Celebs Go Dating, Celebrity Colonic Irrigation etc. you can fill with these talent-free bags of skin and organs.
