AIBU not to dress up fancy dress for best mates birthday?

It's my best mates birthday in 2 weeks, she's got a night planned out for "pub golf" basically where you all dress as golfers and do a tally chart games etc

After some thought about it I really don't want to go out in a fancy dress golfers outfit. I have a few reasons, I'm short dumpy and chubby so I don't feel comfortable anyway. I literally I hate fancy dress (is that a bad thing?) I have anxiety about being on my own in the middle of the night dressed as a golfer maybe having a cry or something.

I told my friend and she said it's fine, apart from there's 8/9 other highly opinionated women also dressing up and they are the kind to wind you up etc about it especially if I say it's because I'm an anxiety sufferer. AIBU/selfish? Should I just grow up and wear the bloody outfit.. because I don't want too 😭

I have severe anxiety and I would feel less stressed just going with the dress code a bit - just wear a polo with jeans/whatever then waiting for people to make comments.

I went to an 80s movie party as Thelma (or was it Louise), basically wearing my usual attire of shirt, jeans, boots. Added a cheap white cowboy hat and toy gun. The venue was boiling and everyone was peeling off their nylon Alien/Ghostbusters/Sister Act etc outfits. By halfway through evening I was about only one left still in "fancy dress".
When you described what you would prefer to wear a few posts ago I thought that sounded perfect with maybe an accessory or two that can be ditched during the evening, I think going as an individual when everyone else is literally a team would be what would stop me going though.

I'm a shortarse & the thought of going out in trainers gives me palpitations!

What are the "games"?

Fancy dress & games sounds my idea of a nightmare tbh.

Or is it a pubcrawl disguised to appear fun?

And large VW badge around your neck

I think @MarthasGinYard has the perfect solution. Add an air freshener and feign ignorance saying you misunderstood when they said Golf.

The moment someone mentions fancy dress and you have to do it I switch off

I wouldn't want to go dressed up in golfing attire with a bunch of people whom I don't know but who each other well either.

Offer to take your friend out on a one to one for lunch for her birthday on another day

clarissa469 · 30/07/2019 12:47

@MarthasGinYard I think you should go for me instead. You're too funny Grin

Pub golf is a super common theme and you may even have other friends who have already done it and have stuff sitting to let you borrow.
Visor
Patterned socks
Jumper slung somehere
Inflatable putter

Job done.
It's your friends birthday, a good friends just go for it!

LuvSmallDogs · 30/07/2019 16:45

Never heard of pub golf. I hate getting invited to events where you're expected to spend out on stuff other than just food/drink/prezzie and card for the bday boy or girl. I wouldn't wear non-jeans trousers or a polo shirt or horrible jumper again.

Yes, I am one of those people who turns up to fancy dress parties with no costume, and I'm always one of several.

theukismyoyster · 30/07/2019 16:47

For pub golf, people usually just pop on a visor! So just wear your normal clothes that you feel comfy in and arrive wearing a visor, and you can take it off whenever you want, and out it on for pics, and you are completely fine!

Generally its a pub crawl of 9 pubs. Each pub has an assigned drink and a golf score e.g. par. You have to attempt to down the drinks within the number of goes that the score is. So for a shot you should be able to down in 1 but something like a pint you might get 4 attempts. Winner is the person who scores lowest over all the pubs

There might be other little challenges and games mixed in but it's basically a downing competition.

Ooops, bold fail
