My stupid Fucking Father

Itcouldbeyou · 27/07/2019 17:14

Hi I have NC as this could be outing and please be gentle with me
I’m wondering if any of you lovely people have any advice apologies as this is long
My father 72 I would say a vulnerable person who is naive and gullible and carer to my mother who has Alzheimer’s and Dementia was contacted by phone last year by the National Lottery Centre asking him if he wanted to join a syndicate for the Irish Lottery
He very stupidly agreed and paid £700 for the year
Every two weeks or so he was then contacted by an account manager asking him if he wanted to join more syndicates for varying amounts of money
When he said he couldn’t afford it they would do a pre authorisation or a smaller amount to see what he could afford. Then they would ring back and ask to take that amount
. I believe that this phone call was recorded but the actual hard sell call wasn’t recorded . Over a period of a year he has used his life savings of around £25000 maybe more
Completely all gone from his account

While I accept that he has been the most stupid person ever and I want to kill him 😂 he is my father and murder isn’t legal so I’m stuck with him .
To be honest I am more annoyed at his bank Lloyds who never once queried these payments
My father has banked with Lloyd’s for 50 years and has never not once made any payments like this to anyone .

The only payment they have ever queried and refused to pay was his car insurance that legitimate and they stopped the payment and he had to go into the bank to authorise this payment and this was a few years ago .
So why on earth did they not stop or query any of these payments
From what I have read the banks have sophisticated fraud systems set up to alert them to unusual payments so did they not think that someone spending 2000 plus in one go every month a bit unusual

I’m asking because whenever I buy or do something that’s not within my spending pattern my card is stopped and I get a call or a text asking me if I have authorised this payment .
I couldn’t even use my card when on holiday recently as it was out of my usual spending pattern
On occasions stuff from Amazon has been cancelled because of the fraud alert
When googling them The

Lottery Centre is based in the Isle of Man and other elderly people have had exactly the same thing happen cold call and then regular amounts taken
I can’t call it a scam as he authorised the payments but like the others he was elderly and was pressured by hard sell to do so and is also a fucking idiot

However it’s the bank that I’m really annoyed with
Any advice on if I am able to complain to the bank about their lack prevention of unusual transactions on an account would be much appreciated

Wow that's awful. No advice in
Afraid but I'm sure someone more useful will be along soon

Itcouldbeyou · 27/07/2019 17:19

Thank you
I’m torn between screaming at him, wanting to hug him and murder him but I think I will drink wine lots of it

Loudlady34 · 27/07/2019 17:21

I think you should go to social media about it. That's disgusting whether he agreed to or not

Bambinho · 27/07/2019 17:23

Yes, please complain. Lloyds were featured on Moneybox today about a woman whose 96 year old mother had died and it was discovered direct debits had been set up on the mother's account and £14,000 had been paid out over 3 years.. Her mother could not have set these up and Lloyds tried not to accept responsibility. Different circumstances but similar elderly person who should have more protection. I think you should contact Moneybox about this lottery scam too.

Itcouldbeyou · 27/07/2019 17:23

When you say go to social media what would I need to do exactly Twitter I have an account but no idea who i would tweet
It’s the fucking bank im annoyed about more than anything else not querying these payments that are completely irregular

BuddysMama · 27/07/2019 17:25

Have you contacted their fraud team or customer service? They could be able to look into it and your dad could get his money back? I'm so sorry this has happened to your dad, there are some disgusting people about!!!

IAskTooManyQuestions · 27/07/2019 17:25

There are laws in place to protect vulnerable people - you do need to take this to the police, your MP and have it highlighted.

The legislation round the IOM will be different to the UK of course, it is of shore banking

I found this, that may be of help:

Complain to where they have a licence, think it is the Gambling Commission in the UK and the Isle of Man. They are not allowed to take advantage of vulnerable people of a certain age and they will give you a refund. A friend of mine was able to get all the money back his father had paid to either this company or one with a similar name. Remember when it comes to gambling the consumer is highly protected especially if they have been encouraged to bet.

badgerbank · 27/07/2019 17:31

I work in financial services and although I'm not a compliance person, I'm sure there are rules banks must follow about protecting vulnerable customers from exactly this sort of thing. Worth making a complaint I reckon.

JoyceDivision · 27/07/2019 17:32

Complain that they haven't acted with due care and diligence, especially as your father is a potentially vulnerable customer.

Complain in writing,if you can locate email for a CEO etc then use them, it does help.

They have 8 week to get back to you with a reply, then you can go to the financial ombudsman

The fact there will be auths by the company to keep checki g an amount they could take should help you x

Itcouldbeyou · 27/07/2019 17:33

Thank you.
In what order would I need to do this
Police to report this but it’s not a scam as such as he did authorise the payments
So how can I report it to them I don’t think my dad being a stupid fuckwit is a crime 😂

OP posts:
Itcouldbeyou · 27/07/2019 17:34

Anyone know who the CEO is for Lloyds 😂

OP posts:
IAskTooManyQuestions · 27/07/2019 17:35

You can report - hes naïve and vulnerable and didn't fully understand what he was doing - hes been taken advantage of.

Funnyface1 · 27/07/2019 17:35

That's heartbreaking to read. I can't stand the idea of taking advantage of vulnerable people. Good luck with it if there's anything that can be done.

Theoscargoesto · 27/07/2019 17:36

Antonio Horta Osario I think

ysmaem · 27/07/2019 17:39

Thats awful. I agree with a pp and think outing Lloyd's on social media is a good idea but more importantly it will also raise awareness that these scams are ongoing and that older people are much more likely to fall prey to them. You might stop this happening to someone else.

IAskTooManyQuestions · 27/07/2019 17:40

CE/Chairman
Norman Blackwell, Baron Blackwell

Raera · 27/07/2019 17:41

Have a listen to todays' episode of Money Box on radio 4. A very similar story and that I believe, was Lloyds too

Lovemenorca · 27/07/2019 17:41

Your father is a Carer to your mother who had dementia and Alzheimers

And you think it is ok to describe him as “your fucking father”

Lovemenorca · 27/07/2019 17:42

Or rather your stupid fucking father

Itcouldbeyou · 27/07/2019 17:42

Thank you
I’m going to complain ask why they never flagged up any of these payments as irregular

OP posts:
blackcat86 · 27/07/2019 17:43

Contact the citizens advice consumer service for advice and to log it and/or action fraud.

IAskTooManyQuestions · 27/07/2019 17:44

But - you have to go through complaints - then on to the ombudsman

Police to report this but it’s not a scam as such as he did authorise the payments

Given that he was almost certainly never entered into any lottery it probably still counts as a scam legally.

humblesims · 27/07/2019 17:46

I don’t think my dad being a stupid fuckwit is a crime
It isnt, but I'm sure that taking advantage of someone vulnerable is. I would certainly complain loudly to ...someone. Other posters will know who.

Itcouldbeyou · 27/07/2019 17:50

Lovemenorca
The title was to grab attention as I know as a long time member on some occasions posts don’t always get help so title with a bit of shocking wording gets attention and gets the help needed
He is my father and he has been fucking stupid but I love him dearly and I’m absolutely devastated that this has happened . I’m alternating between crying and feeling absolutely sick as a dog
He gets a huge amount of help with my mother from myself and my DH and my sister and caters but we had no idea he had done this and it was only when he mentioned about the TV licence and they might not get it next year that i questioned why he was worried as he had plenty of money in the bank which he did

But it won’t change the fact that he has been stupid however he is naive and vulnerable so I can accept that as well
