Period poverty

AIBU to remind you period poverty exists?

Came on this morning, did not have any sanitary items. Asked my DM to send me £5 until payday (Friday). She could only PayPal so I tried to withdraw the funds and I’m on a 72 hour wait!

So no view of having sanitary items for 3 days... and now I also hate pay pal Sad

Did they make it clear? Where?

It makes a difference because either staff are paying for it themselves which I don’t like or it’s funded through money set by for education, which I like even less.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 23/07/2019 20:35

@mnhq threads like this could be solved easily in pm's were stopped
Lots of advice and support zero opportunities to bag a few quid

shieldmaidenofrohan · 23/07/2019 20:35

It literally couldn't be clearer
We, as a staff, are also starting up a scheme where we donate toiletries/ mini toiletries to be available to both boys and girls

hashtagthathappened · 23/07/2019 20:36

Yes but what isn’t clear is how it’s funded or organised.

‘As a staff’ could be using money from the school or paying themselves.

hashtagthathappened · 23/07/2019 20:36

I agree hobnobs and there’s no shortage of imbeciles.

MadamWaffle · 23/07/2019 20:37

I've not read the full thread yet so I'm not sure if you've sorted it.

I have a Tesco voucher for £5 after complaining about something. I'm not 100% sure it's still valid but I'm happy to email it across to you to try?

hashtagthathappened · 23/07/2019 20:38

... and as if to prove my point ...

shieldmaidenofrohan · 23/07/2019 20:39

Hobnobs, I remember MN (back in the mists of time) when I'm pretty sure there was no PM feature..

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 23/07/2019 20:45

Me too
I have also spent long enough here to remember
Trust nae fucker
It's served me well over the years

ChocolateAndMoreChocolate · 23/07/2019 21:00

I didn’t post and run, i work...
a lovely MN member has sent me some pads in the most.
I’ve taken no money.

Thanks to all who offered to help

Fuck me, are some of you miserable cynics or what.
So much pearl wringing over some fucking fanny pads.
Get a life.
And I'm glad you're sorted, OP.

catofdoom · 23/07/2019 21:19

Glad you got it sorted op. I spent the first 5 years of my period using toilet roll etc as I was too embarrassed to ask my Dad and he just didn't think of it. It's a really, really horrible feeling. Sad

ethelfleda · 23/07/2019 21:42

Glad you got sorted, OP.
I’m sorry this post turned in to what it was. You dealt with the onslaught remarkably well.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 23/07/2019 21:46

I’ve been on both sides of this. When I volunteered for food bank we were often asked for san pro, and when I moved into a women’s refuge I was given a bag of toiletries including pads and tampons, which I was hugely grateful for. I also know our church keep a stock in the toilets that anyone can help themselves to. I think there’s a campaign across Scotland for schools / libraries / churches / public buildings to do the same, as period poverty has been shown to be a big issue, including girls missing school.

Enclume · 24/07/2019 00:54

We, as a staff, are also starting up a scheme where we donate toiletries/ mini toiletries to be available to both boys and girls. Having a deodorant/ shower gel/ shampoo can be the difference between coming to school or not.

@snoopdogsbitch that put a bit of mist in my usually desiccated old eyes. Thank you. As a kid who grew up with no soap in the house, I would have been immeasurably grateful.

skybluee · 24/07/2019 01:50

Chocolate I'm glad you're sorted and I'm sorry about some of the things that were said on here.

@whytho
Well said !

tinyvulture · 24/07/2019 04:00

With apologies to the OP, I love the idea of her as a scammer, sitting in her lair somewhere surrounded by the fruits of her scam thinking “Shit, why didn’t I title the thread “Diamond-necklace poverty exists”. Or “car poverty”. Or even “cold hard cash poverty.” “
Perhaps she is sitting on top of a mountain of pads, like a dragon on its hoard. Or counting them greedily with an evil smile.......

Auramigraine · 24/07/2019 06:20

Glad you are sorted OP.

Does anybody know where I can drop off sanitary items to donate to ladies? The thought of someone not being able to have access to them for their period makes me upset, I get mine from Aldi at the mo for about 49p and would happily buy a few extras to donate but no idea where I would take them.

jellycatspyjamas · 24/07/2019 06:50

It makes a difference because either staff are paying for it themselves which I don’t like or it’s funded through money set by for education, which I like even less.

It’s a good job society doesn’t run according to your likes and dislikes. While I dislike the fact that poverty is such people can’t afford basic necessities I’m very glad there are people who will fill the gap for young people. I was that child who had no toiletries, no san pro and who went to school unclean and unkempt. Someone giving me access to soap and shampoo would have made a huge difference to me on a daily basis.

But yes, let’s berate school staff for not funding it in the correct way.

londonrach · 24/07/2019 06:58

feelingverylazytoday · 24/07/2019 07:05

londonrach there's plenty of menstrual cups on Amazon that cost less than £10. Of course the OP can't afford it today but it's something she might want to consider for the future.

feelingverylazytoday · 24/07/2019 07:14

Just seen snoopdogsbitch's lovely post about donating toiletries and sanitary protection for the students who need them. Thank goodness there are so many kind and generous people who do the little bit extra.
It can make a big difference to someone else's life.
