Period poverty

AIBU to remind you period poverty exists?

Came on this morning, did not have any sanitary items. Asked my DM to send me £5 until payday (Friday). She could only PayPal so I tried to withdraw the funds and I’m on a 72 hour wait!

So no view of having sanitary items for 3 days... and now I also hate pay pal Sad

@OtraCosaMariposa

I don't like the expression "period poverty" either. It's not some unexpected disaster which throws your budgeting into a mess for the month like the washing machine giving up or a child needing a new pair of shoes. A period is predictable (in most cases). You know it's going to arrive, you know you have to be prepared for it.

Oh with THESE words of wisdom, nobody will ever be in debt, financial trouble, or poverty again.

You are a fucking genius. You should charge for your skills and talents, and amazing ideas. GO YOU! Whoop whoop! Hmm

JacquesHammer · 23/07/2019 13:34

How does “period poverty” differ from “poverty”? I think this is a silly term

Because it uniquely affects women.

You know it's going to arrive, you know you have to be prepared for it

Check your privilege for goodness sake.

It’s easy for you or me to “prepare for it” because we can afford to do so. One can’t prepare if one has no funds to buy items to prepare with.

OP. If you want to send me your bank details by PM I will happily Bob you over a £5 for sanpro.

BiBabbles · 23/07/2019 13:37

Every winter there is discussions about 'fuel poverty' for the cost of heating and utility bills so discussing specific types of poverty or predictable expenses isn't that unusual.

I second ShirleyPhallus and others that as much as I like my cloth pads, it's really not useful when someone is in a pinch now. The cup I had before was £20-30, and my set of pads was £30-40 has lasted me several years, right now that's not a good recommendation. Hopefully, there is a useful resource like a redbox or a friend who has some that can be used or enough change to get something until funds become available for something better. It's horrible not having period supplies.

Dieu · 23/07/2019 13:38

Happy to buy/post some sanitary pads or tampons - PM with your address if you'd like Smile

more fool you.

Chocolatelover45 · 23/07/2019 13:39

Sorry but you can obviously afford some kind of internet enabled device which is presumably costing more than a cheap pack of pads - it's just a matter of making better choices of what to spend money on.
Suggest you look at where you can cut back in other areas?
And plan ahead a bit better - no one should be so short they don't have a fiver to hand.
(Assuming you are not a child which is obviously different).

Don’t! Someone has already offered to send sanpro by next day delivery

alittlerayofsunshine · 23/07/2019 13:39

@Dieu Although the OP is struggling, please do not send money to anyone online.

JacquesHammer · 23/07/2019 13:40

more fool you

Id rather be scammed for a fiver than for someone to do without.

To be fair looking at your last post, it’s not me who is eminently foolish.

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/07/2019 13:40

A mooncup is not the only menstrual cup, they’re not all that expensive

Dieu · 23/07/2019 13:40

I didn't say I was going to send money. The offer was for sanitary products alone.

JacquesHammer · 23/07/2019 13:41

It’s £5. I can easily afford it. It really doesn’t matter to me there’s a chance it’s a scam.

alittlerayofsunshine · 23/07/2019 13:41

@ChocolateAndMoreChocolate how do you know the OP is not using a public computer? Don't just assume she is forking out for an apple phone and her own internet! FFS!

As a pp said CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE! Hmm

alittlerayofsunshine · 23/07/2019 13:42

@JacquesHammer I know you mean well, but mumsnet always say SPECIFICALLY to never send money to people on here!

MLMhun · 23/07/2019 13:42

Which is why MN is a scammers paradise.

BlackCatSleeping · 23/07/2019 13:43

What is the point of this thread OP?

JacquesHammer · 23/07/2019 13:43

I know you mean well, but mumsnet always say SPECIFICALLY to never send money to people on here

Don’t they say don’t give more of yourself than you can afford....

I mean they can ban me if they want but pretty sure they won’t Grin

Zaphodsotherhead · 23/07/2019 13:44

Toilet roll, make a wodge of it, and put a piece of cut up plastic at the bottom, to stop it leaking straight through. Safety pin (or double sided tape) to keep it in place in your knickers.

Spent all my teenage years having to manufacture my own sanpro. This works well as long as your periods aren't too heavy.

HiItsClemFandango · 23/07/2019 13:44

plan ahead a bit better - nobody should so short they don't have a fiver to hand

That would be nice wouldn't it! Wish I'd thought of that the past few months when I'd been skint and not had a spare fiver!

JacquesHammer · 23/07/2019 13:44

they’re not all that expensive

They are when you don’t have any spare cash Hmm

HebeMumsnet · 23/07/2019 13:44

Hello everyone

We've had a number of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circs, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask everyone to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong.

Hope you get something sorted, OP.

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 23/07/2019 13:44

Can't you borrow some sanpro from a friend or schoolmum?

Jeeperscreepers69 · 23/07/2019 13:45

Ask a friend. And stock up next time u have cash. Tesco 20 tampons one pound. I buy 3 boxes then im never caught short.

alittlerayofsunshine · 23/07/2019 13:46

Fair enough @JacquesHammer Up to you. Smile

momomia · 23/07/2019 13:46

Read something recently that stuck with me; someone lying or 'scamming' says everything about their character. Not helping someone in need when you are able to says everything about yours. Be kind recklessly
