Hes not going to be seen as a failure if we leave with a no deal, in fact quite the oppisite he'll be seen a success hes the man whos going to tell Europe Where to stick it

Sure on day one. But once food is scarcer and pricier, once energy costs have gone through the roof, once ex-pats are forced home, once unemployment rates have soared. Once the union has ended. Once people have died. Once Britain has learned it’s actual place in the world.

Then the odds are enough of his current admirers will turn on him that he becomes known as the worst thing that ever happened to Britain.

Roussette · 23/07/2019 17:19

How does any politician advance with such astonishingly bad hair?

Trump managed it and his is worse. That's the only backhanded compliment I will ever pay Boris.

@Iggly you nailed it with your post

Roussette · 23/07/2019 17:21

Large gins in the garden this afternoon I think

Yep. I had one at 4 o'clock. Last time I did that was when the vote was in. Needed it

Outsomnia · 23/07/2019 17:22

@Graphista,

You might explain how Scotland works for me so. Is it not similar to NI (even thought they have no Assembly at the moment, and haven't had for years.) NI is funded by Westminster. What about Wales?

I do understand that the legal system in Scotland is different to E + W and NI, but are they self funding?

many thanks.

GrouchoMrx · 23/07/2019 17:25

Johnson is going to offer the NHS on a plate to Trump. In a no-deal Brexit, he probably won't have any other option.

NoBaggyPants · 23/07/2019 17:28

employment hasn't slumped

Yes, it has. The stats don't show it because they count anybody in paid employment, even if that's an hour a week. So you can have five (or more) people "employed" in the equivalent of one full time job.

My partner lost his job last week because the public sector contracts his employer relies on are all on hold or pulled completely. So if you think this isn't already affecting people, you need to get your head out of your fucking arse and come into the real world.

StoneofDestiny · 23/07/2019 17:31

I’ve worked with Boris Johnson. He’s lazy, undisciplined, and has the attention span of a gnat unless it’s something that will personally advance him and/or his career. I expected to be entirely underwhelmed by him and he didn’t disappoint

You will rarely find a civil servant, or any official that has worked with him in any capacity, with anything remotely good to say about him

I’m really hoping there are enough senior civil servants left with the will and the ability to thwart the fucker

Yes - he has the morals of an alley cat and he will ditch his current fling as soon as her usefulness as a PR adviser has run its course.

The80sweregreat · 23/07/2019 17:32

Fivetwofaster, good post and you make more sense than the average politician , but having ' divide and rule' is the conservative way and they are loving this ding dong deep down. It keeps the masses from seeing the bigger picture.
I listened to five live earlier on today with their interviews with the public and a few people were not that sure who Boris Johnson was! Had a vague idea. People are disengaged about politics ( but not Brexit) they find it boring.
We need to stick together but politicians are a breed apart and don't like anyone thinking too much about what they are really all about and what this really going on.
People don't have time to read enough about it ; just look at the headlines and make up the rest.
It's how we've got into this mess.
That's how I see it anyway. A lot of mumsnetters are engaged and well read but most people I know are not. They really do switch off.

Outsomnia · 23/07/2019 17:32

There will never be a No Deal Brexit. Parliament will stop it.

I think he will soften the TM red lines on the border issue, and dress it up as a victory.

Little does he know (or maybe he does.......) that such a move would solve a lot of things, and will achieve an orderly Brexit. No border, no backstop, and both EU and ROI (and I am sure NI too largely) will breathe again. EU are open to solutions re the backstop, then trade deals with EU can commence (Once Johnson agrees to pay the divorce bill too).

Win win (well apart from the DUP). But who cares about that pack of bigots running the show anyway.

GrouchoMrx · 23/07/2019 17:35

Oh well, good luck with that is right...........

So Boris Johnson is the new PM.
Vinorosso74 · 23/07/2019 17:37

We are well and truly screwed! He was the worst of a bad pair. Time for the opposition to step up and sort themselves out too so he can be ousted at a general election
The thought of him running a country is terrifying; was bad enough him as the Mayor of London. Even worse is him a Trump colluding.
We really are fucked!

SunshineCake · 23/07/2019 17:39

The pound is up..

Graphista · 23/07/2019 17:40

Ooft outsomnia that's a hell of a question really and honestly warrants its own thread, indeed there may be some on the subject left over from indyref?

But basically the money we generate is sent to Westminster and they give SOME of it (but not all) back to us - in very very simple terms.

Devolved areas of governance mean we have been able to choose to spend our public money in such a way as allows us to do things like have "free prescriptions" (which of course aren't really "free" just as the Nhs isn't really "free" but paid for from that income generated by the people).

There are many articles on the subject

www.newstatesman.com/blogs/the-staggers/2011/11/scotland-12288-union-public#amp

Is just one. Don't want to derail thread too much.

I'm not as well read on Northern Ireland or Wales but I'm sure it is disingenuous to say they are funded by Westminster/England - do you really think people in those countries don't also pay taxes? Generate income? Of course they do. The full details I'm not cognisant of but I'm sure there will be well informed mners from those countries that can comment.

"employment hasn't slumped

Yes, it has. The stats don't show it because they count anybody in paid employment, even if that's an hour a week" actually it's worse - it's ONE HOUR per FORTNIGHT that counts as "employed" - ridiculous!

"So if you think this isn't already affecting people, you need to get your head out of your fucking arse and come into the real world." Damn straight!

JustDanceAddict · 23/07/2019 17:40

Hideous.
Brexit
Trump
Boris

What a combination

bellabasset · 23/07/2019 17:42

I think a few people will need a large drink tonight 🍸

I hope the first PM questions he will be asked is how much extra of the weekly £35 million NHS will get.

Outsomnia · 23/07/2019 17:43

@Graphista,

Thank you for filling me in. I am so caught up in this Brexit thing at the moment. Will have a look at your links.

Appreciate it.

Figmentofmyimagination · 23/07/2019 17:48

What an undemocratic shambles when our next pm is chosen by a minuscule group of white middle class oldies holding repellant views like those of silverysurfer

thetimekeeper · 23/07/2019 17:53

he has the morals of an alley cat

Now, that's just unfair to alley cats.

Piglet89 · 23/07/2019 17:55

Actually Boris and Trump have ONE crucial thing in common. Not even remotely interested in any detail - just in soundbites.

NOT what you want in a leader.

ChangedPerson · 23/07/2019 17:55

I'm glad Boris won the vote, however I don't trust him completely to deliver Brexit. Hopefully I'm wrong though and we leave on 31st October.

StoneofDestiny · 23/07/2019 17:57

And don't forget the link to Farage!

StoneofDestiny · 23/07/2019 17:57

thetimekeeper

I apologise.

TwoPupsandaHamster · 23/07/2019 18:00

Boris won - What a surprise! GE next... who would we vote for? I have no idea who to vote for. There is no party leader who deserves a vote! UK politics is a shambles at the moment.

Outsomnia · 23/07/2019 18:08

Curious to find out how anyone thinks a No Deal Brexit on 31/10 will happen.

It will not be tolerated by MPs from all sides.

OK so it will happen by default maybe, is that what people think? Stupid idea, but it's a soundbyte for the deluded faithful I suppose.

So much for Parliamentary Democracy. I don't care about Johnson, all political careers end in failure, unless you are the leader of North Korea.
