I understood that it meant that he has to both be able to form a government and command the confidence of the Commons. I put it badly, I think it means that he, personally, should be able to command the confidence of the HoC, not the whole government.
Thinking about it, it's easy enough to nominate someone for a government post... like Priti Patel for Home Secretary (Jesus wept!). Is that report true?
But you made me wonder what the confidence part actually means. Does it mean something more than what I'd thought, which is that the new prime minister has to be considered trustworthy and honest? Not get the nation into stupid wars over stuff like middle-Eastern oil, that kind of thing. John Bolton has us well and truly made fools of, and involved, on that.
Is that what the confidence part means, do you think? I'm not sure what else it could mean. I don't think even Theresa May could recommend BJ to the Queen as being honest and trustworthy and able to command the confidence of the Commons, with a straight face. Johnson revels in ignoring the truth in favour of getting himself on the front pages. Narcissist extraordinaire. He'd probably prefer that in Latin and call it a compliment.
We live in interesting times.
