The cheapest and the most expensive property within 5 miles...

TheFridgeRaider · 22/07/2019 19:24

Seeing so many threads about properties and the difference in prices reported I get why it can be so difficult for people to imagine the differences between areas.

Would IBU to be curious and ask you to hop on primelocation and see what are the cheapest and the most expensive properties within 5 miles of your home? Ignore shared ownership, retirement only and investment student studios. Obviously you don't have to post links, just say the area so you can keep anonymous.

I will start.
NW big city
The cheapest:
2 bed flat 35k. Fully livable! Just needs decorating. 15 min to city centre.
The most expensive: 😮
8 bed, oh so amazing, grade 2 listed £1,995,000. 25 min to city centre.

£38.7m, but actually that's a block of flats. (Called apartments obviously with that price tag.)

The most expensive house is an £11m modern 7-bed mansion at 16,000 sq ft in an area with lots of other mansions. It's ok, I like the hall and the gym but most of the decor including kitchen and bathrooms are not to my taste, lots of dark and hard edges. There are also some quirky decisions for the room set-ups. Obviously I wouldn't turn it down if someone gave it to me, but I would definitely redecorate and if I had the money it wouldn't be my choice given some truly fabulous dream home options in the £7m bracket. Actually I'd probably sell it to get one of them and use the excess for stamp duty.

At the other end is a garage for £22k. More and more garages... moving on to actual homes...
Does a 2-bed houseboat count? £40k, described as light and airy, actually thin and dated. Then more houseboats, a bunch of shared ownership flats...
Ah, a proper flat at last! £85k up for auction, studio with a fabulous big terrace, not a great location as it's a busy road and also quite far out but looks liveable and apparently rents for £9k/yr.

olderthanilookapparently · 23/07/2019 11:46

Rural west Suffolk - £895k for a large detached house. Cheapest £165k for a two bed terrace cottage.

notatwork · 23/07/2019 12:22

£1.5 million 17C manor with 2 acres. Rural. Says 7 bedrooms but only 2 bath so needs a refurb. Must be something amiss as seems undervalue for location.

Lowest is 2 bed maisonette £90K in small town. Complete do-upper (wiring ripped out etc).

hannonle · 23/07/2019 12:36

Norfolk coast

East Midlands city

Most expensive: £1.25 million 4 bed detached in prime area

That £40k is the outright asking price; I've ignored all the 25% shares, auction guide prices, etc.

Cardiff:

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-69682408.html

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-72285721.html

I discounted one flat because it was a retirement place, and one with only 8 years left on the lease, so while both were cheaper, they were not really an option for many people.

Brian9600 · 23/07/2019 14:50

London- £60m for a 6 bed house in SW1

Cheapest is a houseboat for £75k.

BlondeLikeBoJo · 23/07/2019 14:56

Most expensive: 7 (en suite) bedroom, 6 reception room mansion with a lift and ‘staff quarters’, on a highly desirable road: £39,950,000 Shock.

morningtoncrescent62 · 23/07/2019 14:57

Edinburgh:

most expensive is offers over £2.9 million for a very swanky six-bedroom house in posh area near city centre - offers over probably means they want well over £3m for it

the cheapest is £73,000 for a one-bed flat in a small town outside Edinburgh itself - the flat looks in reasonable shape based on what you can tell from the pictures, but the outside looks very depressing

CasperGutman · 23/07/2019 15:01

City in South Wales.

Cheapest (ignoring a couple of small building plots, garages and a flat that's "only suitable for cash buyers due to the short lease") is a 2 bedroomed flat for £65,000. It looks OK-ish, to be honest.

The most expensive (unless one of the "POA" ones is actually dearer) - £2.5 million. Six bedroomed 1920s country house, grade II listed, with a large orangery, three imposing reception rooms, stables and 12 acres of gardens/paddocks.

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 23/07/2019 15:02

Worcestershire:
Most expensive: £1,100,000
6 bed, 4 reception detached in large grounds
Cheapest: £34,000
1 bed flat in high-rise block
