to think BBC should be privatised - pronto

First off, can I say I have mixed feelings about posting this. I hate political propaganda on MN, I really do. But I really also dislike BBC PC propaganda (for which I'm paying!!), and No. 2 the fact that most of their programmes are utter shite, from Antiques Roadshow to, well, just about everything else. There was a sensitive-ish BBC programme on Germaine Greer about 6 months ago but I struggle to think of anything else I've watched thats raised the intellectual bar above a pea-shoot.

You really do need to go to other channels for controversy, intellectual stimulation and enjoyment. Apart from their Comedy Department of course - brilliant (This Country and People Do Nothing are the exceptions). But really, the rest is a load of PC-Rest-Home crap. If I see another PubliC service Announcement on Eastenders or their so-called "news" on BBC also known as propaganda, I think I'll scream.

Really, they should put it out of its misery and kill it off and save us all £150 a year? I used to be neutral, but have really grown to dislike Auntie's "we know best" (they don't) over the last few years.

YABU. What about Killing Eve? The David Attenborough programmes?

AuntieStella · 20/07/2019 19:29

Perhaps you just need to choose different programmes?

War in the Blood is the best documentary I'd seen in ages

Since you ask, yes. YABU.

YAB completely U.

SpoonBlender · 20/07/2019 20:07

People piss and moan at £150/year for a license fee, then go out and spend £70/month on Sky and Netflix. My eyes roll.

The beeb is not in my good books these years for the platform it has given Farage specifically and rabid nutters in general under the deluded guise of "fair and even coverage" with Question Time and Have I Got News For You specifically called out, but anything privatised could only ever be worse - and there would be less control over it when they were.

PooWillyBumBum · 20/07/2019 20:09

@MT2017 didn’t David Att. decamp to netflix because the Beeb wouldn’t let him tell it how it is about climate change and wanted him to temper the message to make for better viewing?

Killing Eve was fabulous though.

Vibiano · 20/07/2019 20:09

YABVVVU. Planet Earth was amazing and wouldn't be made by other broadcasters

Left and right say they are biased so they must be doing something right.

donquixotedelamancha · 20/07/2019 20:15

Just to clarify: do you think the BBC are too politically correct? You seem a bit on the fence.

araiwa · 20/07/2019 20:22

I mean this sincerely- odfod

Bbc and nhs are two of the best things about the uk

Look around at other countries and compare.

20 minute shows having 10 mins of ads. People going bankrupt cos theyre ill.

No way are they better. Keep your filthy hands off

WeWantSweet · 20/07/2019 20:23

YABU to say they should be privatised, but not to think that they could cut their cloth to suit their means without pissing people off, if they actually had a mind to.

YeOldeTrout · 20/07/2019 20:26

YABVU. Wish we had a vote button on this one.
Did you really hate Blue Planet and find it full of "propaganda"?

Imstickingwiththisone · 20/07/2019 20:32

If you think the BBC is unintellectual then what must you think of itv, channel 4 and the rest?! If you don't watch them, and hate everything on the BBC then just cancel your license?

Imstickingwiththisone · 20/07/2019 20:34

Also what MN political propaganda? It's just individual poster's views? Is any opinion propaganda if it doesn't match yours?

DonkeyHohtay · 20/07/2019 20:39

I quite like Antiques Roadshow. And "Who Do You Think You Are". And a lot of the drama.

RandomMess · 20/07/2019 20:39

The BBC commercial arm subsidises the core BBC by keeping it afloat.

I think the TV licence should be for the BBC only. Its ridiculous it covers all live tv.

daisypond · 20/07/2019 20:53

YABU

Congratulations on spectacularly missing the point.

People choose to spend their money on that as they are going to actually watch it and can opt out and stop paying at any time.

howwudufeel · 20/07/2019 21:08

YABVU. I hate adverts and the influence of people like Murdoch controlling our viewing habits.

DickieDonkey · 20/07/2019 21:22

Although I watch some BBC output I wouldn’t pay £150 if I had the choice to keep my TV to watch other stuff but could block the BBC. I think the BBCs days are numbered, I don’t know many young people that watch much of it, one of my kids watches Dr Who and that’s it.

DianaT1969 · 20/07/2019 22:16

Netflix is around £7 per month. NowTV (cheaper offshoot from sky) is around £8 per month.

SometimesMaybe · 20/07/2019 22:19

For me it’s not just about TV, it’s the radio. We used to live abroad and as sports fans the thought that there might be live sport on the radio was absolutely incredulous to other people. BBC radio is cutting edge, intelligent, absorbing and up to the minute information. I would be lost without it.
