to think BBC should be privatised - pronto

First off, can I say I have mixed feelings about posting this. I hate political propaganda on MN, I really do. But I really also dislike BBC PC propaganda (for which I'm paying!!), and No. 2 the fact that most of their programmes are utter shite, from Antiques Roadshow to, well, just about everything else. There was a sensitive-ish BBC programme on Germaine Greer about 6 months ago but I struggle to think of anything else I've watched thats raised the intellectual bar above a pea-shoot.

You really do need to go to other channels for controversy, intellectual stimulation and enjoyment. Apart from their Comedy Department of course - brilliant (This Country and People Do Nothing are the exceptions). But really, the rest is a load of PC-Rest-Home crap. If I see another PubliC service Announcement on Eastenders or their so-called "news" on BBC also known as propaganda, I think I'll scream.

Really, they should put it out of its misery and kill it off and save us all £150 a year? I used to be neutral, but have really grown to dislike Auntie's "we know best" (they don't) over the last few years.

OP posts:

There are lots of right wing presenters and studies show no left wing bias.

Right wingers love to think they are oppressed though or being "silenced".

TheInebriati · 21/07/2019 12:04

Or, they could just scrap the licence fee and allow adverts.

daisypond · 21/07/2019 12:14

There’s not enough advertising revenue on TV to go around. Advertisers are moving away from TV advertising altogether.

ginghamstarfish · 21/07/2019 12:27

I agree OP, long past time the licence fee was abolished or rethought. We stopped paying it some years ago and am glad. I do find it biased, dumbed down in the most part, and resent the huge salaries. You can't even watch the stuff you've already paid for if it's over 30 days, as they are no doubt flogging it off round the world or to Netflix/Amazon, or now their own subscription service. How do they justify still needing licence fee money when they are selling the programmes left right and centre? So you have to pay TWICE to watch BBC programmes? Feck right off with that, and I hope it will mean more folks stop paying for a licence.
The few BBC things we want to see come on Netflix or Amazon eventually, so don't mind waiting. We switch between these two, paying £5.99 a month and think it much better value. If we wanted we could have both of them for LESS than the licence fee. If it was possible to have a tv licence for a month at a time like NF and Amazon, fine, but it is not the case. When we cancelled we did not even get a full refund as they only refund for a full quarter. Funny that their system can manage to harrass people for years but they can't manage to refund people what they owe ..... Thieving bastards.

Welcome to MN, TRex4

Do you have enough copy for your article?

newstart1337 · 21/07/2019 13:31

Sky News is free. Netflix is awesome, Ad free and cheaper than the BBC.
The BBC should be pay per view and it would actually force them to improve their quality rather than wasting tax payers money.

Alsohuman · 21/07/2019 13:34

I reckon the BBC’s doing pretty well. Those on the right maintain it’s left wing. Those on the left say it’s far right. To me that means it’s even handed.

Woofbloodywoof · 21/07/2019 14:38

YANBU
Frankly the BBC has always had a slightly left of centre slant and that hasn’t and doesn’t bother me. Plus, John Humphrys and his rabid Brexiteering pretty much cancels that out. (Thank God he’s going soon.)
No, it’s just terrible value for money.
Yes R4 is great - but the rest of the radio is doing nothing that the commercial sector doesn’t already do, and much better. R1 is utterly pointless - that demographic are simply not listening to radio as much as they used to and where it used to break hits back in the day, now it’s simply playing catch up with the viral online streaming world.
As for telly, let the BBC stand or fall or quality and pay its TV bill that way.
If only you knew the money wasted on over staffing and in-house nepotism.

It is becoming increasingly hard for the BBC to justify the licensing fee - it has to shift to a subscription model and cut its coat accordingly. It was a wonderful thing in the analogue decades but it simply isn’t fit for purpose now and there is plenty of interesting, forward thinking creativity in the freelance world.
Black mirror was not made by the BBC for example. And Channel 4 have been involved in some fantastic films, really substantial investigative journalism and way more leftist news programming.

TulipsInAJug · 21/07/2019 15:43

The BBC is disgraceful for its anti-Brexit bias. It's just propaganda these days, the Today programme is just rubbish, really narrow minded and far too focused on UK politics when nothing is actually happening. When there is literally nothing happening on Brexit, why speculate for 3 whole years, it was all just hot air and nonsense. So I switched to Radio 3, which can actually be quite good.

sionnachbeag · 21/07/2019 16:18

anti brexit bias?

Except of course for Humphries, and Andrew Neil and many others. Despite giving brexit politicians lots of air time as well as other business supporters.

Why give the biggest political event in the UK for generations lots of air time?

I think leave supporters conflate anti brexit bias with leavers saying false things ( most of which the bbc doesn't pull them up on)

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 21/07/2019 16:24

Have a watch of this about the BBC.

AppleHEAD · 21/07/2019 16:37

I like all the radio stations, the news, documentary’s, CBBC, dramas, cookery shows and the websites (bitesize) and the recipes are brilliant and I use them all the time. Oh and like lots of the comedy. I think iPlayer for TV and radio are great.

But obviously it’s better to pay a small fortune to SKY every month and yet STILL have to watch bloody adverts. Don’t watch it if you don’t like it but leave it alone. The whole attacking the BBC thing is pathetic. Don’t use it. People like you are tedious

TulipsInAJug · 21/07/2019 16:41

Yes the anti-Brexit bias is appalling. Their 'analysis' is incredibly one-sided. The 'reality check' journalist (who carefully selects his 'facts') and Laura Keunssburg are both prime examples.

AppleHEAD · 21/07/2019 16:41

I forgot the sport. Love the sport. Love match of the day and tennis especially.
How did I forget that.
And my in-laws who don’t get out much love the daytime stuff. Oh and years of CBeebies. Brilliant programmes.

4dogs · 21/07/2019 16:42

I can’t remember the last time I watched anything on BBC. I do watch other channels live tho so have to have a licence. I think it should be a subscription channel, people who watch it can pay for it, people who don’t shouldn’t have to.

sionnachbeag · 21/07/2019 16:49

Haha the bbc is not biased against brexit.

Its just not possible to provide positive analysis of crap economic and political thinking.

BogglesGoggles · 21/07/2019 16:51

YANBU. The government should not be allowed to own a media outlet (let alone fund it into a position of being the main new provider). It’s dystopian.

megletthesecond · 21/07/2019 17:14

Yabu.
£150 is cheap as chips for all the decent tv and radio they produce.

And as other posters have said, the alternative is dodgy characters like Murdoch controlling the media.

Nonnymum · 21/07/2019 17:15

yes YABU

mycatisblack · 21/07/2019 17:20

I agree OP. There are so many better news channels and tv programmes available now compared to ten years ago. The BBC is no longer the best in broadcasting. It's time to either privatise or let it go.

Prometheus · 21/07/2019 17:22

Have you ever watched BBC4? That is worth the licence fee alone. Much better than all the trendy, zeitgeist box set type programmes on Netflix.

dozy12345 · 21/07/2019 17:24

YABU - test match special, radio 4, the new 40 over cricket comp, the Julia Donaldson adaptations, some of the drama and history. Would we have sky arts if there was no competition from the bbc on that front?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 21/07/2019 17:24

This thread perfectly highlights why the BbC should go subscription.

People that like it can then fund it and enjoy it.
People that dislike it can then not fund it and not worry about being hauled into court and criminalised.

At the end of the day, no one should be forced to pay for things they don't use. No one is forced to pay SKY if they don't subscribe. No one is forced to pay British gas of they're not a British gas customer. So why should someone watching ITv be forced to pay BBC?

dozy12345 · 21/07/2019 17:24

Yes spare me another drama written by a team of script writers set across 13 episodes and an 8 series arc - yawn.

YeOldeTrout · 21/07/2019 18:20

The BBC is disgraceful ... So I switched to Radio 3, which can actually be quite good.

Confused Which is it? BBC is disgraceful or "quite good"??

narrow minded and far too focused on UK politics

BBC world service is about... er, world news. And World politics. It's excellent for that. Highly recommended.

too focused on UK politics when nothing is actually happening

Now I've heard it all. Nothing at all has happened in the Brexit saga, in last 3 yrs. "Nothing" ??
