to think BBC should be privatised - pronto

First off, can I say I have mixed feelings about posting this. I hate political propaganda on MN, I really do. But I really also dislike BBC PC propaganda (for which I'm paying!!), and No. 2 the fact that most of their programmes are utter shite, from Antiques Roadshow to, well, just about everything else. There was a sensitive-ish BBC programme on Germaine Greer about 6 months ago but I struggle to think of anything else I've watched thats raised the intellectual bar above a pea-shoot.

You really do need to go to other channels for controversy, intellectual stimulation and enjoyment. Apart from their Comedy Department of course - brilliant (This Country and People Do Nothing are the exceptions). But really, the rest is a load of PC-Rest-Home crap. If I see another PubliC service Announcement on Eastenders or their so-called "news" on BBC also known as propaganda, I think I'll scream.

Really, they should put it out of its misery and kill it off and save us all £150 a year? I used to be neutral, but have really grown to dislike Auntie's "we know best" (they don't) over the last few years.

OP posts:

It's so leftwing it's basically propaganda. It follows its own agenda pushing climate change and trans-rights incessantly.

But I still don't want it privatised because it's a good idea in principle. It just needs reformed.

QueenNetball · 20/07/2019 22:24

Your £150 a year isn't even enough for a strictly costume. 🙄

YABU

TheSmallAssassin · 20/07/2019 22:31

Nah, YABU. Radio 4 is excellent, especially things like The Long View, The Life Scientific, The Bottom Line, More or Less, All in the Mind, The Reunion, The News Quiz, Just a Minute, From Our Own Correspondent, The Listening Project, The Food Programme, You and Yours. Loads of my favourite TV programmes in the last few years have been BBC ones - Mum, Killing Eve, Fleabag, W1A. I listen to 6 Music pretty much every day too. I love that there are no adverts. It's fab and a bargain.

SuzieQ10 · 20/07/2019 22:38

YABU.

Chocolatehat · 20/07/2019 22:39

YANBU for a state broadcaster it is very biased and only represents the views of the London left wing elite. It has a woeful track record on safeguarding, equal pay and vote rigging. It is time the BBC was forced to sink or swim on its own merits.

Conkeee · 20/07/2019 22:42

I’d like to know what will happen to the programmes on iPlayer when this new streaming service goes live. The programmes you’ll be paying for are already shown on Netflix or iPlayer. Will Netflix lose the rights? Why pay for it if it’s already on iPlayer? Anyone know?

YeOldeTrout · 20/07/2019 22:43

Lots ppl insist the Beeb is right wing fuddy duddy Brexit supporting.

HelloyouKant · 20/07/2019 22:45

YABU It’s worth it just for Radio 4!!!!

iVampire · 20/07/2019 22:46

Nice to see the mention of ‘War in the Blood’ (I have leukaemia)

The Parkrun documentary was very good too.

Yes there’s s lot of flimsy entertainment, and I don’t think the News is as weighty as it was. But still worth it

Longdistance · 20/07/2019 22:46

I’d happily opt out. I can’t remember the last time I watched a full program on the BBC. Most of the stuff I watch is on ITV, Channel 4 more 4 and other cable channels.

CheshireChat · 20/07/2019 22:56

MangoDrink this! If you enjoy the content, then you should pay for it, however if you don't then you should have the option to opt out of paying just for the BBC, not all live TV.

dreichhighlands · 20/07/2019 22:57

YABU. Currently living the the US, public radio doesn't hold a candle to radio 4, I fact it buys some of it's content from them.
The major muesums in the area have ticketed shows, guess what they often are ? BBC wildlife documentaries which people pay for and sit and watch in a cinema.
We are very lucky to have the BBC, it isn't perfect but the alternatives are much worse.

newstart1337 · 20/07/2019 23:05

The BBCs politically correct nonsense has destroyed Doctor Who. That was all I watched it for. Netflix is cheaper and much better.

The BBC forced subscription is kept because the establishment think they can force the public what to think.

Bring back free speech!

jessicawessica · 20/07/2019 23:07

I couldn't cope without Netflix, especially at christmas when there's supposedly a lot of good TV on.
I could happily live without the BBC, but it appears I don't have any choice.

Iggly · 20/07/2019 23:12

“Pushing climate change”

Hmm

Climate change isn’t a matter of opinion. It’s one of fact. The earth’s climate is changing! Unless you’re one of those people who don’t “believe” in science.

The BBC has lost its way precisely because it panders to loud minority (and ill informed) views like those of climate change deniers.

Personally I’d like the BBC to stick to fact based reporting. That would remove whole swathes of idiots on the news for a start.

Iggly · 20/07/2019 23:13

The BBC forced subscription is kept because the establishment think they can force the public what to think

Oh the fear in that sentence. Do you use Facebook or twitter? I’d be more afraid of those. At least you know how the BBC is funded.

PookieDo · 20/07/2019 23:13

Planet Earth was the best thing I have watched in years

I really like some of their documentaries
Not everyone wants to watch something American

PookieDo · 20/07/2019 23:14

Netflix is not all that. I’ve watched most of the half decent stuff on it, the rest of it is trash

Fleetheart · 20/07/2019 23:18

Yabu. BBC is great. Not everything of course but in general. Also neutral. Also no ads.

Iltavilli · 20/07/2019 23:21

I haven’t watched anything on ITV for years (not some kind of standpoint, just absolutely nothing on there I could ever face watching). So if commercial tv like that is the alternative then YABVVVVVU.

PickAChew · 20/07/2019 23:23

You seem obsessed with PC, OP.

Maybe turn off the telly and cancel the daily mail sub.

SirTobyBelch · 20/07/2019 23:23

BBC4 is the only television channel I watch regularly. I haven't see any "PC-rest-home crap" on it. And I'm happy to pay £12 a month for it. BBC1 is trash; if it weren't, your employers at the Daily Heil would be grumbling about its being out of touch. BBC radio channels cover a wide variety of interests. Radio 4 is the only channel I can bear to listen to (with the exception of a few programmes on Radio 3). I refuse to watch/listen to adverts, so if the BBC went I would have no television/radio at all.

Hotterthanahotthing · 20/07/2019 23:27

And Poldark is back.
We actually watch a lot less TV than we did and stream films if we have a few hours.
I would miss Radio 4 though for news on the way into work and the comedy on the way home.

Unfinishedkitchen · 20/07/2019 23:30

As useless as BBC News, which should just be renamed the propaganda wing of whichever governments in power’ is, YABU and must love paying high subscription fees, adverts, tv aimed at the lowest level (see Italian tv where even the female news anchors are all cleavage) and being force fed stuff which suits whichever billionaire owns the channel e.g. Fox.

jessicawessica · 20/07/2019 23:37

Looking through the TV magazine for this week is depressing. It's all Poldark and animal/ wildlife/sport.
We don't all think Life on Earth and the Blue Planet are the dog's bollocks.
The BBC assuming we all want to watch the same programmes is pretentious. I do not appreciate wall to wall sport.
