The Lake District - WHY???

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

A pencil museum is exactly the sort of place my parents would have taken me...

Babdoc · 19/07/2019 19:59

DH’s best pal at uni was from the Lake District. He was gruff and northern, and his permanent reply to tourists moaning about the rain was always “Where d’ye think t bloody lakes come from?!”
Cheer up, OP. It won’t rain forever, and when the clouds lift you’ll be able to see all those stunning hill views that are currently hidden from you.

LEELULUMPKIN · 19/07/2019 19:59

Booths seriously let me down on New Years Eve. They ran out of Baileys!

Strawberrycreamsundae · 19/07/2019 19:59

I much prefer Yorkshire or the Peak District, far fewer people and still beautiful scenery.

hammeringinmyhead · 19/07/2019 20:00

I'm not really a fan of the Lakes but I grew up on the Pennines between the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales so it's a bit same same. I do miss the dark lush greenery now we live in Wiltshire!

BikeRunSki · 19/07/2019 20:00

There is a little corner of The Lake District, which is my favourite place in Earth. I think this picture sis up my feelings. I grew up not a million miles away from Fulham and couldn’t wait to leave London. On the other hand, my sister would probably claim Fulham High Road to be in her top 3 favourite places. Each to their own.

The Lake District - WHY???
Sparklingbrook · 19/07/2019 20:00

For me the Lake District=Youth hostelling -school trips, Kendal mint cake, and orienteering. Grin

I can do wet hilly walks on the Malverns now.

blue25 · 19/07/2019 20:01

How can anyone prefer Fulham over the Lake District? Fulham is so fake & pretentious.

If you think the Lake District is hell on earth, you've led a very sheltered life.

puppy23 · 19/07/2019 20:01

YANBU - It's not my idea of a perfect holiday either. I'm sure its paradise to many, but I'd much rather be somewhere foreign and sunny!

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/07/2019 20:01

While we are talking Lake District can I just give a wee recommendation for Aspava turkish restaurant in Cockermouth? I don't know the owners and have no connection with them other than as a customer but it's brilliant and well worth a visit. I'd happily stay in the area and just shuttle between there and Booths :)

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/07/2019 20:02

It is beautiful buts also cold, wet and boring

Imustbemad00 · 19/07/2019 20:02

People talking about the driving... can I ask why it’s bad?

Lakes are in my future plans, as are Devon and Cornwall but now I’m feeling anxious about the driving there. I’m a Londoner so not very experienced on country roads.

huggybear · 19/07/2019 20:03

You're right the weather is better in Fulham. Others are right the Lake District is beautiful. I think you'd be more at home in Norfolk tbh (which is equally beautiful but much closer to London with better weather!)

CuriousMama · 19/07/2019 20:07

It's probably dirty rain in Fulham. OP might not be used to fresh air? Wink

I love Keswick but not at peak times. I've mostly jad good weather there. We're off to the Lakes in October but not school holidays. Ullswater area.

CowCat · 19/07/2019 20:08

I can confirm that it is raining in Fulham today. But I agree with the OP, I would rather be in Fulham. I found the Lake District a bit boring and no nice places to eat.

frumpety · 19/07/2019 20:08

Feign a twisted ankle , leave everyone else to their hiking , get your self cosy with a book and a brew and appreciate the true beauty of being dry Smile

If anyone questions your injury send them over Hardknott or Rhynose pass in an ordinary family saloon car Wink

CuriousMama · 19/07/2019 20:08

Had......I'm wearing false nails for the first time in years. Hard to type.

Ilovelblue · 19/07/2019 20:09

You don't go to the Lakes expecting fantastic weather. You go abroad for that if you want guaranteed sunshine. If you get glorious sunshine, it's an added bonus. I feel I am lucky to live an hour's car drive away. Scenery, fresh air, hundreds of different walks, some low level, some very strenuous. Great pubs, Michelin starred restaurants, some of the best hotels in the country. Do you get such fresh air in Fulham?

5foot5 · 19/07/2019 20:10

Booths seriously let me down on New Years Eve. They ran out of Baileys!

We were amused a few years ago when we visited a Booths (Knutsford) and their adverts said "We have been getting Christmas right since 1847" We couldn't help speculating how badly they got it wrong in 1846 and whether it's something they just don't like talking about.

SnakesAndStones · 19/07/2019 20:11

I hated it too OP! We don't deserve nice things! South Downs any day, now that's a pretty place imo.

FamilyOfAliens · 19/07/2019 20:12

I think if you like Fulham, it’s a given that you won’t like the Lake District.

Evilspiritgin · 19/07/2019 20:13

Instead of complaining, do something about it, take the kids to go ape etc

The Lake District - WHY???

AnyFucker · 19/07/2019 20:13

The roads are often single lane and a bit twisty. Passing places can be few and far apart.

ForalltheSaints · 19/07/2019 20:14

It is the start of the school holidays. When it rains usually. Unlike in mid-September when it is usually sunny.

pressureofaname · 19/07/2019 20:14

It’s been pissing down in Fulham all day 😂
