The Lake District - WHY???

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:03

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

I’ve travelled all round the world. The Lake District is one of the most magnificent places on Earth (and b dog friendly) much better than London

Bellasblankexpression · 19/07/2019 19:47

Why does it have to be a troll? People like different things! A week in all all inclusive is my idea of hell no matter how luxurious.
I love it but I can see how the lakes might not be for everyone, I was just amused by what OP away expecting - surely she knew she wasn’t going to get guaranteed weather and basking by pools?!

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 19/07/2019 19:47

LD is glorious, but you're definitely in the worst (in LD terms, it's still great) part of it. Get yourself out exploring, it's such a varied place. Don't be the London stereotype!

Oh and do some easier walks. Try Aria (sp?) Falls near Penrith. Gorgeous and only a few steep bits but no scrambling. Or rent bikes and cycle Ullswater / Whinlatter. Just stop, listen and absorb the sounds. It sounds like you're struggling to see what actually matters

Oh and get over yourself re the roads. Just stay observant and drive at a speed suitable for the conditions.

This is different rain for sure.

Yes. It’s absent of car smog and the echo of other people’s inane chatter.

5foot5 · 19/07/2019 19:50

I had to clamber up a “scree” today in July fog and I hadn’t bargained on any of this.

OK that deserves a bit of sympathy. I really like the Lake District and we are all keen and regular walkers (though mostly in the Peak District) but I really dislike scree. I prefer the ground I am walking on to stay still.

Hopefully you will get some decent weather soon and will see it in a different light.

bebeboeuf · 19/07/2019 19:50

It’s where we go every winter. I love it in the bleak and cold

HundredMilesAnHour · 19/07/2019 19:52

I don't want to send this thread off at a tangent but for the Booths fans who don't live in the North West (so have withdrawal symptoms like me), I discovered this week that Amazon Fresh sells quite a lot of Booths fresh products. Had my first delivery yesterday and I'm currently sitting in the heart of rainy East London eating some rather lovely Booths beef & black pepper sausages. I'll be starting on the Lancashire Crumbly cheese next. There is a God. Grin

I went to Neal's Yard Dairy at Borough Market a few years ago and they were selling Lancashire cheese. I asked them what sort of Lancashire it was and they didn't realise there were different types! (As a proud Lancastrian) I was appalled. Never bought anything from them since. But Booths....they know their cheese. And their coffee. And their...well everything really!

Right, back on topic. Sorry OP. Please make a visit to Booths if you can. It will be worth it!

LEELULUMPKIN · 19/07/2019 19:52

Slightly off topic but is anyone near Malham at the moment?

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:53

Yes I’m sure I’m a stereotype but I can’t help it.

Is it possible for a place to be too green? You notice on the motorway near about Stafford, that the fields and trees get darker in colour. It feels damp and a bit ominous / depressing from my perspective. I do prefer the lighter coloured and kind of golden fields in the SE, sorry.

I’ll be sure to seek out this Booths. Sounds lovely.

you dont get wildlife without sheep and cow muck

If you mean without herds of grazing herbivores I absolutely agree with you. That's not the same as being chronically overgrazed by a bunch if grass maggots.

groundanchochillipowder · 19/07/2019 19:54

YABU!

herculepoirot2 · 19/07/2019 19:55

You haven’t been on top of enough fells when the sun shines on the brown bracken and whole mountains and valleys look they’ve been set on fire, OP. I love the “green-gold” of the South, but I also love the moody-orange gold of the North.

mindproject · 19/07/2019 19:56

I've been a couple of times a long time ago. It looked quite pretty. Not enough shops though.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 19/07/2019 19:56

At least you are not camping (hashtag 4 hours in Keswick Pencil Museum)

I used to hate the Lake District , but I was going to the wrong bits

Almostfifty · 19/07/2019 19:56

The Lake District is one of my most favourite places in the world. I was lucky enough to live there when my DC were small and we spent most of our weekends wandering around streams and lakes.

BelindasGleeTeam · 19/07/2019 19:56

If all else fails, Booths own label wines are excellent!!
Pair with much cheese. The garlic and herb goats cheese, Parlick Fell and a nice creamy Lancashire will be fabulous.

AnyFucker · 19/07/2019 19:56

The Piel Ferryman is certainly a character Smile

SolitudeAtAltitude · 19/07/2019 19:57

Sounds awful OP, my idea of a not-fun-holiday

Every year DH wants to go somewhere wet and windy up North. I prefer going to Greece.

Or even Fulham 😉

Wet hilly walks are not my idea of fun. It's the sort of thing my parents made me do as a kid, bringing a packed lunch, whilst I dreamt of camping holidays somewhere with chips, ice cream, a pool and a disco....

I have to pretend I like wet hilly walks a few times a year for the sake of my marriage though Grin

At heart I prefer the common comforts of AI hols

BjornAgain81 · 19/07/2019 19:58

You haven’t been on top of enough fells when the sun shines on the brown bracken

I initially read that as "fellas". Blush

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:58

Look at this poor thing

The Lake District - WHY???

Pigflewpast · 19/07/2019 19:58

I love the lakes, but on a day like today it’s the most boring place on earth to try and entertain children. Id be prepared for the crowds to arrive tomorrow, after schools broke up today.

herculepoirot2 · 19/07/2019 19:58

BjornAgain81

Or that Grin

neveradullmoment99 · 19/07/2019 19:58

It is the weather. Its shit. I spent a few days in the lakes and it rained constantly. It was miserable. Also the same in cornwall. I hate the rain. I thinks it cause im from scotland and try to get away from it!
