The Lake District - WHY???

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

Glad you made the best of it.
Enjoy your Chelsea cocktails. At least you gave it a go.

Well I suspect most people have been laughing at me rather than with, Papergirl, just as in real life, but I just tend to just go with this these days.

Spooky story though, Madame Confused

Papergirl1968 · 21/07/2019 22:37

I’ve definitely been laughing with you, rather than at you, and you’ve had my sympathies for the weather and my admiration for actually walking up some of the hills. Smile

broken1982 · 21/07/2019 22:38

I also couldn't think of anything worse OP!

RubbingHimSourly · 21/07/2019 22:47

The Umbrian I agree but didn't when I got cycling home in it 😂😂😂

The air will be much fresher for it. It's been so muggy lately.

I think you do have to adapt to the weather conditions. I was in the Brecon Beacons with my Canadian cousin and he was absolutely determined that he and his children and friends/children's partners would go up Pen y Fan. The visibility was poor, so my husband and I a) declined to go with him and b) suggested some alternative lower level expedition. But he'd planned they'd go on that day and no, he didn't want to do anything else and off they duly went. They got lost on the path and had to walk an extra mile or two before they found it again. When they reached the top they couldn't actually see anything, which for some people might have made it all rather pointless. My cousin's daughter boyfriend had wished to set off in a T shirt, shorts and sandals and was allowed to do so. (It was quite warm down in the valley where we were staying.) Not unnaturally it was considerably colder up on the Beacons, people had to lend him extra layers and he ended up with a mild case of hypothermia. But hey, they had all managed to climb Pen y Fan.

If you went up from Thirlmere you went up the most boring route, which definitely would not make the ‘Best Walks’ list.

I think it is fine to not find an area or an activity ‘your thing’, but I think it is a shame to make the rest of the party, if keen, miss the good stuff.

TheRedBarrows · 22/07/2019 20:49

Bloody hell Marvik that is an example of the opposite: stupid reckless walking, on many counts.

Mipiace · 26/07/2019 13:44

What do you have against Americans?

MrHaroldFry · 26/07/2019 15:06

It is horses for courses isn't it?

I love it there when it is sunny (even if cold) but just don't get the allure in the rain.
It is gorgeously picturesque place I'll give it that and the people are generally friendly and helpful.
