The Lake District - WHY???

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

YABU. Just stop and LOOK at it. I know it's wet. Appreciate the moody beauty. Once the sun comes out walk up a hill. Appreciate the non-London chat to strangers friendliness. Gets some really good food: try the wild boar at Crook for great local food and home-brewed beers and amazing whiskies.

Granted if you don't like scenery and nature it might not be for you but that means you're a philistine!!

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:13

It’s not even in a village. It’s near Windermere, if you risk your life down the lanes for half an hour.

It's a stunningly beautiful place with some amazing walks. I agree that it can get crazily busy though. I like to go just out of season - april/May or sept/oct. Weather can be awful but you've got to go expecting that and be prepared with decent waterproofs. Parking can be bad too but the buses are pretty good .

LoubyLou1234 · 19/07/2019 19:13

I was there for 5 days in May not one drop of rain It's one of my favourite places and only a car ride away. Shame you can't appreciate it even on a rainy day!

Therunecaster · 19/07/2019 19:13

I agree. Went on holiday there last year. Never again. Damp, repetitive and expensive.

shivermetimbers77 · 19/07/2019 19:13

I felt exactly the same way as you when I went there on school journey aged 12, OP.. but now I l am a fully signed up member of the anorak brigade and love it there (but yes, it's better without the drizzle)

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/07/2019 19:14

You'll never convince me OP Smile, it's my happy place too.

FattyPedalsFuriously0hPipNo · 19/07/2019 19:14

If it helps it has rained in London all day (torrential at one point - whilst I was cycling with no coat I might add) horrible grey weather/

AnyFucker · 19/07/2019 19:15

Beautiful coastine November

The Lake District - WHY???
bellalou1234 · 19/07/2019 19:15

I dont get it either.

Kazzyhoward · 19/07/2019 19:15

I'd rather be in the Lake District than anywhere near London any day - hate the place.

LEELULUMPKIN · 19/07/2019 19:16

When Fulham is awarded Unesco World Heritage Site status you might have a point OP, until then you are being VVU.

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/07/2019 19:16

If you spend a sunny day in Windermere you will be fed up with people by the end of it.

LoubyLou1234 · 19/07/2019 19:16

The rain you are on about is also all over the northwest not just the lakes!

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:16

Maybe there’s something wrong with me. I had to clamber up a “scree” today in July fog and I hadn’t bargained on any of this. DH is in his element so I’m smiling along...but really?? This is a holiday?

It a good place to stop off so you can get to centerparcs for 10am on arrival day .

BrexitBingoGenerator · 19/07/2019 19:17

Oh for goodness sake. The Lake District is famously like this, what did you expect?!? Find a copy of swallows and amazons, get yourself a good cup of tea and snuggle up somewhere to read and gaze at the view. It’s beautiful there.

Persea · 19/07/2019 19:18

YABVU - The Lakes is glorious.
Kendal Mint Cake is food of the gods.

Abillity2019 · 19/07/2019 19:18

So what’s the plan for while you’re there then? Fell walking? Climbing mountains? Outward bound activities? Wandering round the towns and villages? Stately homes? Or are you just going to spend 4 days moaning?

AnyFucker · 19/07/2019 19:18

Piel Island Ferry

The Lake District - WHY???
Al2O3 · 19/07/2019 19:18

A walk round the quiet solitude of the lakes at Elterwater, listening to Northern Divers, as the raindrops spread across the water's surface is timeless tranquility. Then you know this will all be there long after we have gone. Afterwards walking through moss-soaked woodland, you can breathe in ancient scents that lift the soul and wash away all the 'bad fog' of the last few weeks. Atop a fell, you can settle into rock and drink a tea and listen to the drip of the rain. You can be truly alone but surrounded by the best in life.

The poor sheep have been spray painted mostly. Is this ominous for them?

TheCumbrian · 19/07/2019 19:19

It is particularly bad today.

I've lived here my entire life and work an hour away and even I was groaning coming back up the motorway this evening at the weather.

The forecast is better tomorrow.

Which non village are you in?

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:20

Thankyou A12. I will try.
