The Lake District - WHY???

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

Each to their own. To me the LD is cold, wet and totally boring. The only walking I like to do is between shops - I am a total townie and happy with that. If you love the Lakes then great.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2019 20:15

Anoraks? I'll bet no one was wearing an anorak.
Goretex walking coat with map pocket and wired peak to the hood. And if it's properly raining (which judging from Lancashire today it might have been for a while) then also goretex trousers.

Blankspace4 · 19/07/2019 20:15

I’m a city girl too but find with a trip to the countryside it’s all in the attitude. If I’m minded to enjoy it I will, if I’m minded to be cold / damp / bored / miserable inevitably I will be.

Get a waterproof and some sturdy walking boots or trainers (and there’s a shopping trip if you haven’t!) and plan a route with a nice pub at the end of it.

Hope it picks up!

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2019 20:17

The roads are often single lane and a bit twisty. Passing places can be few and far apart.

Still easier to drive there than London though.

RingtheBells · 19/07/2019 20:18

I’m not so keen, DH loves yomping up the hills with a loaded rucksack and clambering up scree and stuff like that, I don’t. I don’t mind a walk on grassy hills as long as is not to steep but prefer to walk round the villages and maybe have a nice lunch so YANBU as it sounds more like yomping than lunching.

Whatdoyoumeme · 19/07/2019 20:19

😆 I was supposed to be there until Saturday, staying on a small boat on lake Windermere with my son. We left yesterday and travelled up to Whitby for the last 2 days of our holiday. I just couldn't face another trip across the lake in a dinghy to get a coffee. It is a very beautiful place but next time I think we'll stay on dry land to admire it!

PumpkinPie2016 · 19/07/2019 20:20

The Lakes is beautiful whatever the weather imo. We generally go every year in Oct - personally, I think it really comes into its own in Autumn/Winter (not that this helps you OP ).

If the weather isn't great - you could go on a lake cruise or the gondola at conniston waters. The travellers rest at Grasmere is nice for food/drinks. Don your coats and go looking around towns - Kendal is nice and there is a coffee morning at the Unitarian chapel every Wed and Sat (all welcome - you don't have to be religious) if you need some shelter.

Hope you manage to enjoy it OP.

GREATAUNT1 · 19/07/2019 20:20

YANBU, God forsaken hole it is!

MrsLinManuelMiranda · 19/07/2019 20:21

WaxOn I had never heard of Booths until I arrived here on Saturday. I went in to one day, just a Northern Waitrose!

Toddlerteaplease · 19/07/2019 20:21

My sister lives there. It's gorgeous. Though I'm in big trouble for being to busy to go and stay with her. 🙈

Beebumble2 · 19/07/2019 20:23

I’ve tried the lakes 3 times, each time has been a disaster, not weather retaliated.
Keep going on the M6, turn left at Gretna and head for Dumfries and Galloway. Hills, Lakes, coast and facing south with the Gulf Stream. Much better.

Beebumble2 · 19/07/2019 20:23

*related.

TwistinMyMelon · 19/07/2019 20:23

I wasn't that impressed with the lakes... 🤷🏻‍♀️

But then I live in Devon.

London has a certain charm. I lived there a few years. I miss city hustle and bustle. Horses for courses I guess.

Boysey45 · 19/07/2019 20:25

@Strawberrycreamsundae Yes I'm with you there. The Lakes are a well trodden path.

MerdedeBrexit · 19/07/2019 20:25

Pfft. Give me Fulham any day of the year.

frumpety · 19/07/2019 20:26

Imustbemad the driving is like driving in any rural area, the locals know the roads so drive with a flagrant disregard for all the highway code recommendations , you don't know the roads so drive cautiously round the blind bends, expect tailgaters but don't be bullied, and in Devon and Cornwall the hedges have rocks in them and reversing is a key skill, oh and all roads lead to Gweek or Stithians Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/07/2019 20:28

WaxOn I had never heard of Booths until I arrived here on Saturday. I went in to one day, just a Northern Waitrose!

Blasphemy!!

We have a waitrose, to be fair it's not a big one but it's not very good, the food can be pretty tasteless and it smells really weird. i don't shop there any more but I end up in Booths virtually every day when in the lakes.

RingtheBells · 19/07/2019 20:28

Definitely go to Booths though, they have stuff like fresh beetroot ready peeled in the fruit and veg section, which was lovely. I’m quite easy to please Grin

I was there last week with family. It is my two ds (17 and 24) favourite holiday destination, if you climb high enough you can often get above the cloud line. The views are truely breath taking. We used to go every February half term and always got out to walk. The sun shone nearly every day last week and we walked for about 7 hours a day. The weather can change very quickly so may be better tomorrow.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 19/07/2019 20:34

Close the dagger on your way out OP, you won’t be missed 👋🏽

howwudufeel · 19/07/2019 20:34

I love the Lakes. Happy memories of school and Brownie trips there. The scenery still takes my breath away.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 19/07/2019 20:34

Lol, gate not dagger

Northernlurker · 19/07/2019 20:36

You've definitely failed my test op. It's 'too green'?

SlackerMum1 · 19/07/2019 20:38

We went to booths in the Lake District as I’d read it was amazing and better than Waitrose... all I can say is if that’s considered good... ummm.... hmmmm... 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
