The Lake District - WHY???

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:03

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

You must be doing the Lake District wrong!!! It’s beautiful, we go every year! The weather makes no odds on what you can do and see nor how picturesque it is!

Ellmau · 19/07/2019 19:29

It's the rain. It really is gorgeous when the sun shines.

I do remember a really miserable holiday in a damp grey rented cottage when it rained every single day. It took years to be prepared to go back.

Why go on an outdoor holiday if you loathe walking and climbing and being outside?

Whereisthegin1978 · 19/07/2019 19:30

Book a spa day at the low wood hotel, have lunch at Chesters, Skelwith Bridge plus there is an easy walk here, coffee at Homeground cafe in Windermere.
The lakes in the wet is miserable if you aren’t used to be outdoors ! In the sunshine it can be glorious - if it gets warm head to fell foot and go swimming in the lake.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/07/2019 19:30

OP there's no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing. Are you damp of foot? Is that why you have taken leave of your senses?

Eat a scone and dry out somewhere.

Scrowy · 19/07/2019 19:30

I used to think the Lake District was beautiful and wild. Now I know that it's just a very damaged, overgrazed landscape with terrible weather and far less wildlife than it should have.

Only if you believe what you read. The truth is actually very different.

You don't get wildlife without sheep and cow muck

AnyFucker · 19/07/2019 19:30

One winter evening driving back from the pub we stopped to see why there dozens of cars parked by the roadside.

Swarms and swarms of literally tens of thousands of birds were flying in a murmuration right above our head. It was so beautiful people were crying with the joy of it. Not me though. No. Ahem.

I live here

I agree, totally overhyped.........once you've seen one green hill you've seen them all. Prefer scotland myself. 😏

HOWEVER, there are some amazing. Hidden gems off the beaten track. Join the I love the lake District Facebook page for pointers (( was shooting down a slide carved out of rock into a pool just a couple of days ago )) and don't leave without seeing cathedral caves. Make sure to check out the goldfish whilst you're in there.

Also Brockhole is lovely and great fun. You can hire mini motorboats there (( don't bloody do it from bowness. It's like the M6 on water )) they also have tree top nets, those high wire, activity things, a huge adventure playground and archery off the top of my head.

Went last August, we found quieter areas. We went scrambling, we did mini golf, we visited National trust sights. Things to do rain or shine. I understand if your not outdoorsy it may not be your thing.

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:31

DH booked this. It’s his relatives. The kids are trying their best.

We were going to the Lake District this weekend but having checked the forecast we changed our minds. We have a family cottage up there so will wait until the weather picks up!
For future reference we have always had the best weather during September!

managedmis · 19/07/2019 19:32

Best in November, on a quiet Tuesday morning

MaxNormal · 19/07/2019 19:32

Bless you OP. You're funny and good-humoured in the face of people's rather serious crossness.
I'm developing an aversion to the British weather full-stop so I very much sympathise.

My daughter has just come back. Lovely piccys but a bit green for me 😂

managedmis · 19/07/2019 19:33

Book a spa day at the low wood hotel

^

Ere we go

Sagradafamiliar · 19/07/2019 19:34

Oh I love it when it's like this. Eerie and romantic

crosser62 · 19/07/2019 19:34

Oh yadbu!
It is just lovely, lovely.
Granted the American high pitchedness would grate and jar but in those surroundings I would put up with anything.

HundredMilesAnHour · 19/07/2019 19:34

Lovely piccys but a bit green for me

The clue's in the green. It's due to all that rain. Wink

Yogagirl123 · 19/07/2019 19:35

The Lake District is an area of outstanding natural beauty, what’s not to like, get back to Fulham OP it’s spoilt on you.

LucheroTena · 19/07/2019 19:35

I know what you mean op. I like to get out of the car and have a look, then get back in and find a tea room. Are there no shops? Art galleries, wooden mills???

Nicolastuffedone · 19/07/2019 19:35

Love, love, love the Lake District! Rain or shine it’s my favourite place!! will be back in a couple of weeks and I can’t wait.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/07/2019 19:35

It's gorgeous! plus, Booths! bangs gavel....YABU!

IdentifyasTired · 19/07/2019 19:36

Going to defend the OP here. I live in an AONB not a million miles from the Lakes and truthfully it can be dreary and dull. Pretty scenery is not all it takes to have a good holiday.

RubbingHimSourly · 19/07/2019 19:36

AnyFucker have you done the seal watching tour ?? I actually know the ferryman Grin have done for years. Dolphins spotted off Walney again too.

I love it really, it's my life's ambition to stay in one of the cottages on Piel......but I agree with the op. The lakes, lakes can be tedious.
