The Lake District - WHY???

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:03

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

No, the spraypaint just tells you which farmer they belong to.

ShinyMe · 19/07/2019 19:21

Yes, I'd definitely prefer to go to Fulham.

The Lake District - WHY???
chomalungma · 19/07/2019 19:21

There is a reason why it's so green and full of lakes.......

Have fun,

Bellasblankexpression · 19/07/2019 19:21

I love it in all weathers! The lakes look amazing with a heavy mist hanging over them, you can still get a boat trip and just sit downstairs and take in the view and the history, there are loads of amazing restaurants and tea rooms, you can go on beautiful walks just layer up the waterproofs.
If you wanted guaranteed good weather I don’t know why you holidayed in the UK!

Alpacathebag · 19/07/2019 19:22

Um, what did you think the Lake District would be like?

Tryingtogetitright · 19/07/2019 19:23

i like it up there but I do get your point! We went to the pencil museum on a rainy day. Can highly recommend that. We went in just to keep dry but found it surprisingly interesting!

BjornAgain81 · 19/07/2019 19:24

It's a beautiful place. yabu.

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:24

I don’t think I should day which non- village it is as it might be “outing.” Plus, I’m not sure. It’s just a house. It’s north of Windimere so in the centre?

Ack. My pics have stopped posting.

CatherineVelindre · 19/07/2019 19:26

I loathe the Lake District. I find it damp and oppressive. Give me the Welsh seaside any day!

HundredMilesAnHour · 19/07/2019 19:26

Wow OP, you're such a townie. Grin

As a fellow Londoner (who grew up close to the Lakes), my best advice to you is to brave the lanes to Windermere and go to Booths and stock up on nice food goodies and wine and then hole up wherever you're staying and enjoy the views. I'll translate that: Booths is the Northern equivalent of Waitrose but better than Waitrose and has more of a local/regional focus. Booths is food heaven. And there's a branch in Windermere so your luck is in.

HappydaysArehere · 19/07/2019 19:26

Absolutely lovely. Where is your soul? Open your eyes and enjoy.

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:26

Well it looks better in that Xmas photo, yes.

Look, if you're really that bored OP, try passing the time by googling radiators and drains theory 🙂

^^'Radiators’ are people who radiate energy, positivity and who spur us on. ‘Drains’ on the other than drain us of energy, motivation and zap our pizzazz! If you want others to help spur you on, you need to hang our with ‘Radiators’ and limit time as much as possible with the ‘Drains’.

BarbariansMum · 19/07/2019 19:26

I used to think the Lake District was beautiful and wild. Now I know that it's just a very damaged, overgrazed landscape with terrible weather and far less wildlife than it should have. That's kind if taken the shine off it for me.

TheCumbrian · 19/07/2019 19:27

They are there AnyFucker is that in the Lyth Valley somewhere? I'm trying to place it.

JacquesHammer · 19/07/2019 19:27

I would take 2 weeks of constant rain in the Lake District over 24 hours dry in Fulham Grin

Northernlurker · 19/07/2019 19:27

I don't think city dwellers should be allowed in to the lakes or anywhere rural without having to pass an exam.
Name three breeds of cow and two breeds of sheep, tell the difference between a pheasant and a partridge, identify a tree type of thing. It would do them a favour really.

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:27

I have to be honest, I don’t like the grey stone houses. The driving is very dicey.

We arrived in Carnforth from Somerset on Saturday. The weather has been glorious, up until Thursday. Visited Windemere, Bowness and Morcambe. So peaceful where we are staying that the damp weather does not matter.

Go off and "wander, lonely as a cloud'. Enjoy some Grasmere gingerbread.

The rain just makes it more special.

Bellasblankexpression · 19/07/2019 19:28

I also love that you’re surprised that you’d be out walking 😂
Genuine question, what were you expecting to do while you were there?

ShinyMe · 19/07/2019 19:28

Last time I was there I drove around on a rainy day and found a stunning Arts & Crafts house museum that I want to live in. It was gorgeous. I have no idea where it was, but it was lovely.
