The Lake District - WHY???

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:03

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

The Lakes are stunning, would much rather be stood in the rain admiring the scenery here than the concrete jungle of Fulham.

PickAChew · 19/07/2019 21:09

I don't drive but we live somewhere with lots of twisty roads of its own and DH's tip is, unless you know every curve and peak and trough of said road, use your sat nav, even if you know where you're going. Even if you can't see a bend ahead, for some reason, you'll know it's coming because it's in the corner of your eye so you don't end up being one of those annoying drivers who slams their breaks on in surprise and fear at every single undulation.

Bluearsedfly36 · 19/07/2019 21:09

@WaxOnFeckOff it's really lovely, just not fun at Easter 😂😂😂 great when you get to buttermere. OHs uncle has the pub there.

AmeriAnn · 19/07/2019 21:09

I haven't been to the Lake District for 50 years. I loved it there. Simply beautiful. My parents loved to go camping there and also Wales. One day I will have to return, if my health permits.

I live in a wide open very rural part of the U.S. We have no neighbors, just lovely scenery in all directions. A woman from the other side of the state was visiting here a few years ago with her adult daughter. The daughter surprised us by announcing that she could never live here because it was just too awful because she said there were no people & no other houses close by.

I asked her where she lived and it turns out she lived under a major airport's flight path. I told her we had no crime here at all and she almost proudly told me about the crime in her neighborhood - murders, home invasions, the works. She'd been robbed a few times so she said they had to get a nasty pit bull. Confused

I just don't understand some people at all, but very glad they don't live here.

Quite like a refreshing wet walk then to cosy up in a pub and eat a full English next morning - proper lovely!

marvik · 19/07/2019 21:14

What's not to like?

The Lake District - WHY???
WaxOnFeckOff · 19/07/2019 21:17

We stayed in campsite near buttermere one year I think. In a yurt. We had a week of glorious sunshine. We go to the lakes around once a year but we've never done the yurt again as we said to DC that there is no way we would ever get that weather again so we can't go back Grin. We got the bus from the campsite to Keswick and kids were delighted when an open topped bus turned up.

We generally go at Easter but we tend to get slightly different holidays here so as long as we avoid easter weekend, it's never been too bad.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/07/2019 21:19

DH was looking for a lower gear than 1 trying to get up the honister pass one year, we were doing fine until we came across a car stopped and then we lost all momentum.

Douberry · 19/07/2019 21:19

YABU - I love the Lakes. One of the most beautiful places ever. Wishing I was there now!

LEELULUMPKIN · 19/07/2019 21:20

Go and see the Badger's feeding at night time, that was a real highlight for me!

MrsMiggins37 · 19/07/2019 21:20

The Lake District is lovely, but like most places shite in the rain. Similar to Scotland (where I live!)

I also hate hillwalking etc as well Grin

TheGrapefulDread · 19/07/2019 21:21

Is that a whiff of moist non wicking, synthetic fleeces in the air ?

serialgrannie · 19/07/2019 21:22

OP - I think you are being paid by the LD Tourist Board. I haven't been back for several years but reading this thread has reminded me that the Lake District is my favourite place on earth. I speak as a very old retired person who has spent her children's inheritance visiting Peru, Burma, Japan, Canada and many other beautiful places on earth. But the Lake District wins (closely followed by the Scillies). We once climbed up Crinkle Crags, the clouds parted and the vista below us over Wasdale was incredible. We have taken our grandchildren and I had to wake up the youngest at 6.00 am to show him two red squirrels in the garden eating the nuts under the bird feeder. I am off now to book a cottage for a week in October. By the way, it has poured down all day here. But at least I am not in Fulham.

Seadragonusgiganticusmaximus · 19/07/2019 21:22

YABVVVU. We’ve been in the LD for two weeks - today has been the first really rainy day, and we still managed a bike ride this morning before the rains came in earnest.

Blueuggboots · 19/07/2019 21:23

I'm the same as you OP!!
Can't see the attraction.

midgeland · 19/07/2019 21:23

@northernlurker I'm ashamed that it took 9 pages for someone to note that the OP has indeed gone on holiday by mistake.

Hair are your aerials, OP. This is why bald headed men are uptight.

wallymum · 19/07/2019 21:24

Haha 'take me back to Fulham!' Listen to yourself.

Rain and anoraks 🙈🙈🙈🙈
Why do you think it's called the Lake District? 😂😂😂😂😘

Westfacing · 19/07/2019 21:29

I hope the OP comes back and tells us how the BBQ is going!

ssd · 19/07/2019 21:29

The lake district is as boring as shit. YANBU. Especially in the rain.

DonkeyHohtay · 19/07/2019 21:31

I'm sure the Lake District wished you'd stayed in Fulham too. Please don't venture outside the M25 in the future. Out of kindness to the rest of us.

Paramicha · 19/07/2019 21:34

we travel around this area a bit, it's beautiful. A bit of rain and mist makes it even better.

ssd · 19/07/2019 21:35

The op can go where she likes
Just cos she doesn't like the lake district so what? At least she didn't say it was shit, like I did.

user1471449295 · 19/07/2019 21:36

I’m with you OP (I’ll now duck for shelter)

Jollyholibobs · 19/07/2019 21:42

The arts and crafts house is Blackwell. Thoroughly recommend.
