The Lake District - WHY???

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:03

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

I grew up there, my family have lived there for generations. I miss it. This thread is making me dreadfully homesick Sad

I was in London earlier. I’m sure anyone else who was there would agree with each that the rain was absolutely horrendous. And made worse by cars and buses whizzing by and spraying dirty water all over people. You won’t get that in the Lakes.

RosaWaiting · 19/07/2019 20:56

Loving the pics
No such thing as too green

Fulham, meh.

Bluearsedfly36 · 19/07/2019 20:56

@Disfordarkchocolate OH wouldn't go because he grew up there and was sickened by it. The kids went to the climbing wall instead... I went shopping and had lunch in the pub 😁 we spent a bit of time at the lake and Fitz park. I'll try and drag him down next year.... I booked again for next year the day after we came home. The kids might not be up for it though.

Tallgreenbottle · 19/07/2019 20:56

The lakes are mostly there because of the rain tbf op 😂

It's beautiful. You're bonkers.

Cherrysoup · 19/07/2019 20:57

If anyone questions your injury send them over Hardknott or Rhynose pass in an ordinary family saloon car

Ooh, that’s vicious! My mum literally pooed herself at the top of Wrynose pass! You could always do the Struggle, uphill, on foot, if you’re really bored. Whilst there, go for a swim in Brotherswater. My cousin swears he felt hands grabbing his legs from below in there. 😱

If you’re bored in the Lakes, you’re in the wrong bit. If you’re wet, you’ve got the wrong clothing on. Saying that, I forgot to take a coat when I was last there and nearly froze going across Ullswater (who wants the OP to cycle along Ullswater?! Past Glenridding? Nice narrow lanes and twisty bits 😱)

I love this thread Grin

Especially love the gung-ho DH and his American rellies!

huggybear · 19/07/2019 20:58

The rural north is very different to the rural south.

Bluearsedfly36 · 19/07/2019 20:58

My OH used to work at Honister Slate Mine up Honister Pass... That's a fun drive Confused

We went 3 years in a row to find the allusive Lake District everyone races about. It rained most of the time while the rest of England had a heatwave, the locals were not that friendly and it is more deprived that their tourist board would have you believe. The gastro pub vibe is harder to find too so chips with everything.

Still very beautiful but not an "easy" holiday
Haven't been back but may return when we have no children.

The pencil museum is free - we went 3 times!

lakeswimmer · 19/07/2019 21:00

Can I just clarify that it doesn't rain all the time here but if you come for a week, or even a weekend, and it's rainy you might assume it does.

I went to London twice last year and both times it rained a lot (including during the heatwave) when it was dry and sunny at home in the Lakes despite that I'm not daft enough to assume that it always rains in London!

MrsStock · 19/07/2019 21:00

It has been a pretty crappy day weather wise but I'd have spent the day in the pub if I were you! I reckon you must be in Troutbeck - try the Mortal Man or The Queens Head. There are no such thing as a dingy pub in the lakes... just very old, interesting and cosy ones (especially for weather like this!). Or go to Staveley between windermere and kendal for some good food at the Beer Hall and a short but lively walk around the river.

isitwhatitis · 19/07/2019 21:00

Find the fudge shop in Kendal (?). Then find a real ale pub.

isitwhatitis · 19/07/2019 21:01

^ Keswick not Kendal.

BikeRunSki · 19/07/2019 21:02

The roads are often single lane and a bit twisty. Passing places can be few and far apart.

We have an expression for narrow roads and small spaces “it’s a bit Langdale”.

Bluearsedfly36 · 19/07/2019 21:02

@isitwhatitis I love the olde friars, the huge sweet shop

daisychain01 · 19/07/2019 21:03

@AnyFucker Swarms and swarms of literally tens of thousands of birds were flying in a murmuration

They're not just any old birds , ya know they're M&S birds themz a murmuration of Starlings.

Ye Gods, just think of all that shit, I hope you had an ☔️

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/07/2019 21:03

We go quite often @Bluearsedfly36, fresh air, pitch and putt, everyone else likes The Puzzling Place, a wide selection of cake shops, boat trips, great walks.

outofnothing · 19/07/2019 21:04

I feel your pain OP. We are off to a Scottish isle next week, the weather looks awful, I hate birds and things that swim in the sea ( unless I can eat them). So not looking forward to it.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 19/07/2019 21:04

I'm with you. It's all very pretty but it's so dull.

huggybear · 19/07/2019 21:05

It does rain a fuck lot more than London though

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/07/2019 21:06

I also once visited Seathwaite Farm, just to experience the wettest place in Britain. Right on cue it poured down, but what really got me is that it has a campsite which I see gets 9/10 on a camping website ... so people actually ENJOY camping in the rain?? Confused

Oh, and Coniston's burial ground, to find Malcolm Campbell's grave. The whole site was so waterlogged that they might as well have just left him in the lake ...

Bluearsedfly36 · 19/07/2019 21:06

@Disfordarkchocolate I really enjoyed myself last week. It was nice having our own space and pleasing ourselves. Had to get fish and chips from the olde keswickian, lovely.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/07/2019 21:07

Love the honister pass.
