The Lake District - WHY???

washedoutandabout · 19/07/2019 19:03

Rain, drizzle and yet more rain. Grey sky, grey houses and damp. Everyone in anoraks. Mist and fog and more grey. Plus I’m here with a bunch of American relatives who are all gung-ho and outward-bound and very loud, shrill “upspeak” voices, who think even the grottiest pub is “Awesome!!” Plus DH loves it and is showing off on his competitive extreme hikes.

Help - take me back to Fulham!

AIBU to think this is hell on earth?

The Lake District.... beautiful place. The M6 on a bank holiday weekend getting there? Not so much 😯

ilovesooty · 19/07/2019 21:50

I went to the Lake District for a week years ago when I took my mother on holiday. I hated it. Give me a city or the seaside any day. I can see why other people like it but people all enjoy different things.

verystressedmum · 19/07/2019 21:53

It's absolutely beautiful there but we had to cut our camping trip short as it was raining so hard every day it was a bit miserable

janebond007 · 19/07/2019 21:56

maybe it's cause I'm scottish and we're surrounded by lochs already but I was a bit meh about the place.

Nice for a weekend spa break but ridiculously expensive compared to a weekend in a hot foreign city.

Not an outdoorsy person myself and don't see a point in spending money on stuff you can do at home.

The towns are the same as you would get anywhere.

Except Grassmere, that's a nice wee old fashioned village.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/07/2019 21:58

I live in the Lakes. I'm a Scouser. I love Liverpool but I would rather be here. However, for most visitors the Lakes is Windemere, Ambleside and Keswick, with a few selected fells. You have to go away from that, or even come out of the national park. It's been hideous weather today, but all week it's been blazing sunshine!
Well, if you don't like it, go home. It'll free up the roads from the tourists. Wink

lakeswimmer · 19/07/2019 21:59

Camping in the rain is miserable anywhere. One wet British summer we got on a plane to Nice with our tent to find some hot dry weather. When we arrived it was raining and carried on raining for several days. You can be unlucky with the weather in lots of places Wink

shinynewapple · 19/07/2019 22:02

I think everywhere is rainy today. We are away in rainy north Wales but had beautiful weather just here a few weeks back.

Funnily enough we had originally planned to go to Lakes ourselves this weekend but couldn't face the M6.

Keswick is my favourite place, love to stand down by Derwentwater and look over at the mountains. I think there are other things to do there as well - boat on lake, mini golf, tennis courts. And of course the famous pencil museum!

BelindasGleeTeam · 19/07/2019 22:05

I love Buttermere. And the Eden Valley to the North and the Howgills to the South. Quieter and also beautiful.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2019 22:06

Give me a turquoise sparkling sea and I’m happy!

Oh, in that case you should follow the advice to carry on up to Oban and take a ferry - to the Outer Hebrides.

BuildBuildings · 19/07/2019 22:07

OP I agree it is fucking awful.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/07/2019 22:07

DH and DSs love going to rookinhouse for the karting in horse shit - a lot more fun than it sounds. they do loads of stuff, clay pigeon shooting, archery etc. we aways manage to fill a week, even in the rain. DH loves hill walking and boys and I don't really, don't mind a nice stroll that ends at a pub... so, DH gets up at 4 or 5am and goes up and back from the hills by the time we've got breakfast done.

AnyFucker · 19/07/2019 22:08

@daisychain01 there was not a drop of bird shit

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/07/2019 22:09

Everyone is entitled to enjoy what they enjoy though, I like all sorts of holidays, don't complain about a week at the beach in the sun or a city break or whatever. There is no law that requires you to only do one kind of holiday.

userxx · 19/07/2019 22:10

I visited the lakes for the first time ever a few weeks ago, it's only an hour and a half away and I can't believe I've never been before. I was glamping and it was amazing. Went into Bowness-on-Windermere which was lovely but so busy.

Alwaysonarecce · 19/07/2019 22:11

OP YANBU

Definitely different rain. Not more beautiful in the rain. Having lived 15 years in the north and fifteen years in the south, yup, different rain. It rains sideways.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2019 22:13

Funnily enough we had originally planned to go to Lakes ourselves this weekend but couldn't face the M6.

We live quite near the M6 and our plans for tomorrow are primarily based on how to avoid it....hmm...
No, you're absolutely right OP. Spot on. No city dweller or southerner will like it, don't come. Especially if you've got a caravan, you'll be much happier getting it stuck in a Devon or Cornish lane than a northern one.
And you'll only like Scotland if you go up the A1 instead, honestly.
Grin

Mamagin · 19/07/2019 22:14

I don't like the Lake District, it's too steep.
Also, you are on the Wrong Side of the Pennines. It's better in Yorkshire.

userxx · 19/07/2019 22:14

What a view to wake up to, the weather was beautiful though.

The Lake District - WHY???
LillithsFamiliar · 19/07/2019 22:17

I was so disappointed the first time I went. We have lots of lovely lochs and hills in Scotland and they're nicer than the Lakes but the second time I enjoyed it more. I think they are so lauded that it's natural to be disappointed. The next time, you'll know what to expect so it won't seem as bad Grin

CoffeeRunner · 19/07/2019 22:21

We were in Bowness on Easter Sunday. Glorious sunshine, not a car park space anywhere.

I love it. But my parents ashes are scattered there so it holds special meaning.

Homeallday · 19/07/2019 22:22

Is The Drunken Duck still there and still doing good food? In the late 80s I used to help at a teenage camp holiday and all of us leaders always went there for decent food and chocolate fudge cake the day the kids went home. And a pint or three.

jenthelibrarian · 19/07/2019 22:23

OP I love you, let's run away to somewhere warm and nice!

The Lake District scared me rigid, I hate heights, hate that horrible claustrophobic skyline of dark, gloomy rock-faces instead of a wide sky and was convinced all those casual heaps of rocks everywhere were going to drop on my head. All those waterfalls, tumbling down the ugly rocks from a great height? Shouldn't be allowed!

TapasForTwo · 19/07/2019 22:23

Is it the rain or lack of urban sprawl that you dislike?

lakeswimmer · 19/07/2019 22:24

Yes Drunken Duck is still there and is a lot more upmarket than it would have been in the 80s. The food is still good though as far as I know - haven't eaten there for ages - it's pricey these days.

Lovemusic33 · 19/07/2019 22:28

I felt the same when we visited north wales, the weather was awful and we couldn’t see much other than mist. Everything seemed grey and dull but people keep telling me how amazing it is. I’m sure if the weather was better I would have appreciated it more but I don’t think I will be going back 🤣

I would love to go to the Lake District but would probably go without kids as I would like to enjoy the quiet and walk miles without kids moaning about there legs hurting.

I have seen people on here moan about Cornwall and how boring it is but it’s one of my favourite places to go on holiday. People like different places for different reasons and find others boring, we can’t all like the same thing.
