Posting here for traffic. Please be kind.

My husband bit into something hard on Monday and a massive filling fell out. It wasn’t painful because he’s had root canal on that tooth.

By Tuesday night it starting aching a bit. By Wednesday night he was in agony and started feeling feverish. He was up all night in tears (this man NEVER cries) he was in so much pain. Rushed him to the dentist this morning at 8:30. They did an X-ray and said there was a pretty bad infection. They put him on antibiotics and sent him home. Told him to come back at 2pm for an extraction. The tooth was extracted and apparently a lot of infected tissue came out with it. He is still a mess! The pain has settled down but he is exhausted and we are struggling to keep his temperature down. I’ve been alternating between paracetamol and ibuprofen but it only comes down to about 37.6 for an hour or so and then starts climbing again. At its worst it was 39.4. He is very clammy and just wants to sleep. Is this normal for an oral infection??? I want to call 111 but he says I’m being ridiculous and that the antibiotics will kick in soon. Something doesn’t feel right. He hasn’t really eaten in two days either. I made him soup and he only managed a few spoonfuls.

He never gets sick. We’ve lived in this area for 7 years and he only registered at the doctors 6 months ago. It’s just so unlike him. Any advice would be so appreciated! I just need someone to say whether this is normal and I can relax or I need to ignore him and call 111. Help!

Ignore him.

Call 111.

Northernsoullover · 18/07/2019 23:14

Ignore him and ring 111. Just say you are ringing for advice. Which you are.

Lockheart · 18/07/2019 23:15

You need to call 111 urgently. They will be able to give you proper medical advice. I hope he's feeling better soon.

fairynick · 18/07/2019 23:15

Not a doctor, but I would say definitely not a waste of time to ring 111! Infections should be treated seriously, the call handler will let you know what to do.
In my experience they tend to have a better safe than sorry approach because obviously they can’t physically examine you, so they might even suggest a&e. I’d say take that advice, because it could be sepsis you never know (although I really hope he’s fine).

SavageBeauty73 · 18/07/2019 23:15

Call 111. He may need IV antibiotics. I'm no expert but I'm surprised they pulled the teeth in the midst of infection. I had to wait until my infection went; it was hellish!!

DramaAlpaca · 18/07/2019 23:15

I'm not a doctor either, and I also think you need to call 111 pronto.

blonderunner · 18/07/2019 23:16

I'm a doctor - sounds like sepsis and probably needs urgent assessment and IV antibiotics esp if he's having rigors and is sleepy.

SeaToSki · 18/07/2019 23:16

Call and if you dont get an answer sharp ish, take him to A and E. Dental infections can settle in the heart really easily, you should never take them lightly

Seeingadistance · 18/07/2019 23:16

I'm not a doctor either, but I once called 111 even though my then husband said he was fine. He was blue-lighted to hospital with sepsis.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 18/07/2019 23:18

I'm not a doctor but I've recently had a severe tooth infection and extraction.

It will take about 48 hours for the antibiotics to kick in. I took codeine and alternated with ibuprofen.

I was in a lot of pain and felt like I had been hit in the face with a brick.

I alternated putting a plastic bottle of icy water and a bottle of warm water on my jaw to ease the pain. I also found being stood up in the shower with hot water blasting my face the best relief ever too.

I felt a lot better two days after the extraction.

pinkoneblueone · 18/07/2019 23:18

Please call 111 right away.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 18/07/2019 23:19

I second ringing to get professional advice though, better to be safe than sorry.

thecatinthetwat · 18/07/2019 23:19

Call 111 - your husbands judgement is not reliable.

Evidencebased · 18/07/2019 23:21

Somethings changed.
Because he's had this infection , and now you're getting worried.
Act on this hunch.
Call 111 now.

InABigCountry · 18/07/2019 23:22

Agree with above poster that dental infections can spread to the heart. I would take him to hospital to get him checked over if you are not happy.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 18/07/2019 23:22

I’ve had a couple of abscesses and they can be really nasty but the temperature thing doesn’t sound right. Ignore him and phone 111.

nocoolnamesleft · 18/07/2019 23:23

I'd probably cut out the middle man and go straight to A&E. They don't usually do teeth, but he sounds systemically unwell, so sepsis has to be excluded/treated. Promptly.

NoSauce · 18/07/2019 23:25

Poor man. I agree with everyone else, I’d phone 111 too and see what they advise. Hope he’s feeling better soon.

gotmychocolateimgood · 18/07/2019 23:25

OP please get medical advice and let us know what's going on Flowers

CrispbuttyNo1 · 18/07/2019 23:25

I dont remember having a high temperature either. He's probably sleepy and tired as he was up all the previous night but the fever is worrying.

Greywalls12 · 18/07/2019 23:26

Definitely call 111, he needs proper assessment.
I'm a nurse on a cardiac ward and we've had several patients end up with infective endocarditis from dental infections that haven't been treated fully.

PurpleDaisies · 18/07/2019 23:26

You need to seek proper medical advice now. 111 or gp out of hours.

DaisyChainsGetBroken · 18/07/2019 23:29

Hosp

Weirdpenguin · 18/07/2019 23:30

I would not hesitate to get him to hospital for assessment. Could be sepsis or endocarditis . Hopefully its a lower level infection but he needs to be seen by a doctor.
