Posting here for traffic. Please be kind.

My husband bit into something hard on Monday and a massive filling fell out. It wasn’t painful because he’s had root canal on that tooth.

By Tuesday night it starting aching a bit. By Wednesday night he was in agony and started feeling feverish. He was up all night in tears (this man NEVER cries) he was in so much pain. Rushed him to the dentist this morning at 8:30. They did an X-ray and said there was a pretty bad infection. They put him on antibiotics and sent him home. Told him to come back at 2pm for an extraction. The tooth was extracted and apparently a lot of infected tissue came out with it. He is still a mess! The pain has settled down but he is exhausted and we are struggling to keep his temperature down. I’ve been alternating between paracetamol and ibuprofen but it only comes down to about 37.6 for an hour or so and then starts climbing again. At its worst it was 39.4. He is very clammy and just wants to sleep. Is this normal for an oral infection??? I want to call 111 but he says I’m being ridiculous and that the antibiotics will kick in soon. Something doesn’t feel right. He hasn’t really eaten in two days either. I made him soup and he only managed a few spoonfuls.

He never gets sick. We’ve lived in this area for 7 years and he only registered at the doctors 6 months ago. It’s just so unlike him. Any advice would be so appreciated! I just need someone to say whether this is normal and I can relax or I need to ignore him and call 111. Help!

Good on you for taking him in, one of my neighbours was in hospital for weeks because of a tooth infection. They can really get out of control.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 19/07/2019 03:16

Definitely the right call getting him to A&E. Hope he's alright and gets swift and effective treatment.

NoisyNeighbour · 19/07/2019 03:22

Poor DH Sad I hope he feels better asap, you did the right thing.

Ceebs85 · 19/07/2019 04:08

Glad you had some good advice. How poorly would he have needed to be to admit he needed help!

Hope its not sepsis, but if it is hope its treated quickly and effectively

Shooturlocalmethdealer · 19/07/2019 04:11

What dingbat dentist would ever pull an infected tooth?? Completely dangerous. Infections like that can kill you. He seriously needs to be seen by a dr asap.

Lawnmowingsucks · 19/07/2019 05:28

Hope all is getting better Thanks

FluffyCloudsInTheSky · 19/07/2019 05:38

Hope he is ok Thanks

NotJustACigar · 19/07/2019 05:39

Poor DH, please update us.

olympicsrock · 19/07/2019 06:19

I’m glad you went to A and E. I am a doctor and was about to post that

ValleyoftheHorses · 19/07/2019 06:28

Dentist - I would be advising A&E as if he’s already on oral antibiotics and has had the source of infection removed (extraction is totally the right treatment btw) then there’s nothing more I can do. IV antibiotics are sometimes needed.

CanuckBC · 19/07/2019 06:28

How is he doing?

Nearlyfriyay987654321 · 19/07/2019 06:30

How did you get on OP?

ValleyoftheHorses · 19/07/2019 06:32

@Shooturlocalmethdealer are you a dentist? If not please don’t criticise! We are under a lot of pressure to reduce antibiotic use. For most dental situations access and dress the nerve or extraction is the right treatment. In this case the first option is not possible as the tooth is already root filled.
Antibiotic prescribing criteria are quite strict and getting the tooth out is best if possible as then usually the body can fight the residual infection.

CupoTeap · 19/07/2019 06:35

@ValleyoftheHorses had never considered dentists being under presumption reduce AB use like I know GP are. Surely that's not right ?

Nogodsnomasters · 19/07/2019 06:56

How is he this morning op?

SavageBeauty73 · 19/07/2019 06:58

How's he doing?

Mrspimplepopper · 19/07/2019 07:01

Hows everthing going op?

Lockheart · 19/07/2019 07:04

Good grief everyone, she may well still be at the hospital with a very ill DH (or hopefully they'll be at home catching up on sleep), stop badgering her for updates. If she wants to and has time I'm sure she will but I imagine right now the OP has other priorities.

Lawnmowingsucks · 19/07/2019 07:07

I'm sure she's very busy @Lockheart and I'm sure that when she has time to return to the thread she'll feel heartened that we're all thinking about her and her DH and sending our best wishes

DeathMetalMum · 19/07/2019 07:21

I hope your DH is okay, you definitely made the right choice regarding A&E.

MIL had some quite severe complications due to a tooth infection a couple of years ago, and it took her quite some time to recover.

KayJoMomo · 19/07/2019 07:29

Hi everyone! I’m sorry I couldn’t update you earlier. I couldn’t get any signal on my phone and the WiFi is terrible. I’ve come outside to update you now. Thank God it is not sepsis. He has acute osteomyelitis, the infection has spread to his jaw bone. He was admitted over night and has been put on an IV drip. They should let us home today but he has to come back once a day for a few days for more injections. He will then be on oral antibiotics for up to a month! I’m so glad I came on here to ask for advice. This could have turned into something much worse if I hadn’t acted fast. My DH said to say a big thank you too! He kept telling me I should come out to update you but I didn’t want to leave him. He is sleeping now and seems to be settling down. Thanks again! You’re all amazing.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 19/07/2019 07:32

Well done for acting on your instincts and getting DH to hospital. Hope he makes a speedy recovery

EleanorReally · 19/07/2019 07:33

oh how terrifying.
good luck

roothyb · 19/07/2019 07:36

What a poor soul! I can't even begin to imagine how much pain he must have been in. I've had a wee abscess in a tooth and it was the worst pain I've ever been in, it's torture! He must have been so bad! Glad he's on the mend! ❤️
