Posting here for traffic. Please be kind.

My husband bit into something hard on Monday and a massive filling fell out. It wasn’t painful because he’s had root canal on that tooth.

By Tuesday night it starting aching a bit. By Wednesday night he was in agony and started feeling feverish. He was up all night in tears (this man NEVER cries) he was in so much pain. Rushed him to the dentist this morning at 8:30. They did an X-ray and said there was a pretty bad infection. They put him on antibiotics and sent him home. Told him to come back at 2pm for an extraction. The tooth was extracted and apparently a lot of infected tissue came out with it. He is still a mess! The pain has settled down but he is exhausted and we are struggling to keep his temperature down. I’ve been alternating between paracetamol and ibuprofen but it only comes down to about 37.6 for an hour or so and then starts climbing again. At its worst it was 39.4. He is very clammy and just wants to sleep. Is this normal for an oral infection??? I want to call 111 but he says I’m being ridiculous and that the antibiotics will kick in soon. Something doesn’t feel right. He hasn’t really eaten in two days either. I made him soup and he only managed a few spoonfuls.

He never gets sick. We’ve lived in this area for 7 years and he only registered at the doctors 6 months ago. It’s just so unlike him. Any advice would be so appreciated! I just need someone to say whether this is normal and I can relax or I need to ignore him and call 111. Help!

Thank you all for your replies! I’m taking him to A&E. Just waiting for his mum to arrive to mind the kids. I didn’t call 111. Thought it would be best to go straight to hospital. Something is definitely not right. Really appreciate you taking the time to answer. Will try and keep you updated.

I don't mean to scare you. I ended up with sepsis two years ago after a miscarriage. Because I had never miscarried naturally before I didn't know that I was ill with sepsis. They are the exact same symptoms I had. I couldn't keep my temperature down. All I wanted to do was sleep. I didn't eat (and I am normally such a big foody!) I was constantly clammy and had 0 energy. When my DP rang the hospital for advice they told me to get there ASAP and gave me a drip with antibiotics in, when I was discharged I also had 2-3 weeks worth of antibiotics in tablet form. I also told DP to stop being silly, i didn't need to go to the hospital. He saved my life. I'm forever grateful and I'm glad now that he didn't listen to me.

Sending Flowers I hope you're both ok. Seems like such a stressful time OP. x

Lockheart · 18/07/2019 23:44

I think from what you've described A&E is the right call. Good luck.

ReadyForActionRyderSir · 18/07/2019 23:47

Hope he gets better soon OP

GabsAlot · 18/07/2019 23:47

I was going to say isnt it odd that they took the tooth out without the infection clearing first

Thump · 18/07/2019 23:49

It can't do any harm taking him to A&E. Best of luck.

GrabbyGertie · 18/07/2019 23:49

Hope they can give him something to sort things out. Sounds very painful

TokyoSushi · 18/07/2019 23:51

Good decision OP, hope you're both OK Flowers

MIL is nearly here and we’re about to set off. Last update before I go quiet for a while. The dentist told him the anaesthetic might not work because of the infection. He was so desperate he told her just do it anyway! Thank God it worked and it was relatively quick and painless to get it out. He actually cried afterwards from pure relief. I’ve been a blubbering mess seeing him like this. Will keep you updated. Thanks again for being so kind and helpful, all of you!
