Posting here for traffic. Please be kind.

My husband bit into something hard on Monday and a massive filling fell out. It wasn’t painful because he’s had root canal on that tooth.

By Tuesday night it starting aching a bit. By Wednesday night he was in agony and started feeling feverish. He was up all night in tears (this man NEVER cries) he was in so much pain. Rushed him to the dentist this morning at 8:30. They did an X-ray and said there was a pretty bad infection. They put him on antibiotics and sent him home. Told him to come back at 2pm for an extraction. The tooth was extracted and apparently a lot of infected tissue came out with it. He is still a mess! The pain has settled down but he is exhausted and we are struggling to keep his temperature down. I’ve been alternating between paracetamol and ibuprofen but it only comes down to about 37.6 for an hour or so and then starts climbing again. At its worst it was 39.4. He is very clammy and just wants to sleep. Is this normal for an oral infection??? I want to call 111 but he says I’m being ridiculous and that the antibiotics will kick in soon. Something doesn’t feel right. He hasn’t really eaten in two days either. I made him soup and he only managed a few spoonfuls.

He never gets sick. We’ve lived in this area for 7 years and he only registered at the doctors 6 months ago. It’s just so unlike him. Any advice would be so appreciated! I just need someone to say whether this is normal and I can relax or I need to ignore him and call 111. Help!

I wish him a speedy recovery and am glad he is getting treated.

MedalMedalMedal · 19/07/2019 07:42

Goodness me I’ve been wincing reading this, it sounds agony.

Your poor dh op Sad (and you too! How worrying) Hope he recovers quickly now he’s being treated.

ThatCurlyGirl · 19/07/2019 07:42

Oh Jesus that's so painful the poor guy, the IV should have given his body a bit of a boost to start with hopefully. I can never believe how long drips take!

Really hope the antibiotics work quickly and he feels better soon - well done to everyone who said to take him in and get it looked at!

Thanks for coming back with an update OP. Speedy recovery to your husband Thanks

SeaToSki · 19/07/2019 08:08

So glad he is being treated. Over the next couple of months, keep an eye on him, and if he has any heart symptoms (breathlessness, lightheaded, chest pain or tightness,) then take him straight to the GP and ask for a cardiac check up de to this oral infection. If bacteria have settled in his heart, they might have caused damage that wont be immediately apparent.

LakieLady · 19/07/2019 08:34

Wow, how scarey. I had no idea that dental infection could lead to osteomyelitis.

So glad it's being sorted OP, and how sweet of your DH to tell you to pass on his thanks. He sounds lovely, and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Lawnmowingsucks · 19/07/2019 09:02

Huge hugs to you both xxx

Sexnotgender · 19/07/2019 09:06

Ouch! Hope he’s on the mend soon.

Veryouting123 · 19/07/2019 09:10

I'm so glad you went with your gut OP. My brother was hospitalised after developing sepsis from a similar infection.

I hope your DP starts to feel better asap.

koolaider · 19/07/2019 09:36

Thanks glad he's on the mend OP and this is a good thread. I didn't know the seriousness of something like this and now know if anything similar happens to me or a loved one to act fast.

Hope you manage some sleep soon and please keep us updated on DHs recovery.

kateandme · 19/07/2019 10:52

oh god you poor luvs.im so glad you came on here too.tooth infections are in the catorgory of the worst kind of pain.
we have had much experience of this and so i thought his symtoms were screaming needing help straight away.
makes me feel a little sick at the thought of you listening to him to leave it!
phew.
are you in the uk.one thing i can suggest is going to chemist and getting some orajel extra strength.you get a dollop of this and gently put over the area and it does wonders.
also when you cant really eat or drink sometimes jsut something to suck like a sweetie or ice or soothers can really help.
tirozets if the mouth feels sore.
hot salt water rinse.eases and keeps it clean.
also take the pain killers on the dot round the clock to build that wall of pain relief.missing a dose means it starts to edge out your system.keep it going until he needs less.
also sleeping and sitting slightly lifted head so the blood isnt throbbing into those places.
keep him hydrated and eating if he can.
he will feel pathetic and sorry for himself this is toothache 101.
not that your dr wont have tolld you all this :S
im so glad your both ok.bug hugs.

DramaAlpaca · 19/07/2019 12:38

Justaboy · 19/07/2019 13:19

RESULT:)

Thump · 19/07/2019 16:17

Well done to you and MN. I wasn't there so obviously wouldn't have known how sick he was to judge, but it was a good call by MNers to take him to hospital. Hopefully his recovery is quick and as pain-free as possible.

ohtheholidays · 19/07/2019 21:53

FluffyCloudsInTheSky · 20/07/2019 07:43

So glad you both went to A&E. I wish him a good recovery

WhiteDust · 20/07/2019 07:54

Poor fella. Glad he's getting treatment. Well done for acting on advice OP and taking care of him. Sometimes decisions need to be made for others when they are obviously so poorly x

Justaboy · 20/07/2019 14:03

Its always a dliemma to go or not and most people have a "we don't like bothering them" attiude which is fair enough but sometimes I suppose a few extra opinions are worthwhile espically if they are coming from on the board medics anyway;)

NoSauce · 20/07/2019 14:05

How’s he getting on now OP?

Justaboy · 23/07/2019 00:04

Yes OP, any further ?..
