To think the kitchen fruit bowl is not the place for the cat to snooze in!

Close family member has a gorgeous British blue cat (indoors only). The cat has free reign of the house downstairs and is allowed on kitchen surfaces such as the counter and table. Each to their own I guess, but I think this next bit is pushing it. I was invited for coffee today and was sitting chatting at the breakfast bar when all of a sudden I saw something move out of the corner of my eye and then I realized it was the cat snuggled up in the fruit bowl on the counter and he was yawning and adjusting his head. To say I was shocked was an understatement as I could just about see some apples underneath him. Relative could see I was taken aback and said that cat usually snuggles in the bowl when the fruit in about to run out as there's more room in it and that there were only a few apples in it anyway! I said you're not going to eat them surely and she said of course they will as the cat has no germs as he's an indoor cat! I don't care how clean and cute he is but he's still an animal at the end of the day. I hope she at least will wash them! We have pets who are a big part of our family so it's not that I'm not used to cats and dogs etc AIBU?

Don't ever eat there.

catwithnohat · 18/07/2019 17:42

Personally it wouldn't bother me a bit but then I'm owned by 2 indoor Siamese.

I know where I am in the pecking order ...

PS they don't get on the countertops or the table. Everything else is a stepping stone.

Yabu

Everywhere is a cats sleeping bed GrinGrin

But no, I wouldn’t be comfortable with the cat sleeping in our fruit bowl, which is why she doesn’t.

Gottalovesummer · 18/07/2019 17:49

I'm hoping you took a photo to share with us?

Cats are mad , apples can't be at all comfortable to sleep on. I wouldn't mind this at all tho, would just wash or peel any fruit before eating.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 18/07/2019 17:49

Yeah I'd not encourage it but it wouldn't put me off the apples lol. This is my cats house I just live here.

F2Feee · 18/07/2019 17:49

Yanbu thats disgusting. I might be biased because I loathe cats. But I still believe that's filthy to have it roaming around near food.

ipswichwitch · 18/07/2019 17:49

You do realise theres probably been worse than cats on your fruit before you eat it. After all, it’s tends to come from trees/bushes that are outside! Probably why they recommend washing it first.......

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/07/2019 17:49

You'd hate my house, my cats go wherever they want.
Tbf though, my fruit bowl is where I keep hair bobbles/car keys/random vouchers I'll never use etc.

TheRLodger · 18/07/2019 17:50

I’d just wash the apples first!
If there loose in the supermarket who knows who’s geeky hands have already groped them. Or if grown outside what bird or insect has pooped peed on them.
Depends on the fruit! Bananas, kiwis, pineapple and oranges yabu

TheRLodger · 18/07/2019 17:50

Germy not geeky

mbosnz · 18/07/2019 17:52

@catwithnohat

I'm owned by one indoor siamese, it's her birthday today. . .

We had words about finding her in the kitchen aid mixing bowl. I don't think I won that exchange.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/07/2019 17:55

I think your friend needs a constant supply of pineapples.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 18/07/2019 17:55

Hah we had to start using the grey plastic lid that covers the KA bowl when one of our bellend cats decided that washing his backside in there each morning was his absolute right!

YABU to be so freaked out. If you don't want cats in your fruit bowl that's your choice. If she was ok with it that's her choice.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/07/2019 18:13

I’ll just leave this here.
(Yes it is a fruit bowl which had 2 bananas in).

Yabu

If I fits, I sits.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/07/2019 18:15

Albeit I made the mistake of putting a cloth place mat on top which obviously only encouraged the feline concerned.

mbosnz · 18/07/2019 18:16

I gave up trying to say the cat was never allowed on the table when it landed in my husband's boss's plate. . .

YABVVVVU

My cousin's kitty thinks he's the perfect size for a fruit bowl.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/07/2019 18:29

Oh my, what a lovely cat moose.....

mbosnz · 18/07/2019 18:30

Cat's. Who'd have 'em?! Ah well, just think what they're doing for our immune system, lol.

(Although I was a bit upset when I realised that the cat and I had shared the same water glass.)

learieonthewildmoor · 18/07/2019 18:30

I am very strict about not allowing my cats on the table or kitchen bench.

MyOpinionIsValid · 18/07/2019 18:32

Not got an issue at all where the cat sleeps

DingDongDenny · 18/07/2019 18:32

Is that a Maine Coon Moose?
