To think the kitchen fruit bowl is not the place for the cat to snooze in!

Close family member has a gorgeous British blue cat (indoors only). The cat has free reign of the house downstairs and is allowed on kitchen surfaces such as the counter and table. Each to their own I guess, but I think this next bit is pushing it. I was invited for coffee today and was sitting chatting at the breakfast bar when all of a sudden I saw something move out of the corner of my eye and then I realized it was the cat snuggled up in the fruit bowl on the counter and he was yawning and adjusting his head. To say I was shocked was an understatement as I could just about see some apples underneath him. Relative could see I was taken aback and said that cat usually snuggles in the bowl when the fruit in about to run out as there's more room in it and that there were only a few apples in it anyway! I said you're not going to eat them surely and she said of course they will as the cat has no germs as he's an indoor cat! I don't care how clean and cute he is but he's still an animal at the end of the day. I hope she at least will wash them! We have pets who are a big part of our family so it's not that I'm not used to cats and dogs etc AIBU?

Mine claims to get vertigo if anything is over a foot high. He never climbs on the cabinets and cries at the sight of a cat tower. I had to remove him from the worktop after he got up and couldn't get back down Hmm
However he scales a 6ft fence Hmm when I'm not looking

I did several summer jobs in orchards and on fruit farms.

It was not unusual to see rats or mice run over the crates of fruit waiting to go to the packing factory. As well as spiders lizards and snakes (in Australia.)

Cats are the least of your worries tbh.

What is it about cats and fruit bowls??

I would be honoured to eat an apple that any of these beautiful creatures had napped on

SimonJT · 18/07/2019 22:36

Mine happily sleeps in the fruit bowl as well, and the bathroom sink, so you have to wash your hands in the kitchen.

fruitbrewhaha · 18/07/2019 22:37

I'm going to need some more photos of cats in bowls before I make up my mind.

Moraxella · 18/07/2019 22:40

Ours has been resident in the fruit bowl for about three years (contrary to every other bed which is callously vacated after one week’s occupancy). The fruit has moved out obviously - long gone and relocated to fridge. The fruit bowl is just a tiny bit too small to hold the whole cat, which I think is part of the attraction.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 18/07/2019 22:40

YABU. They put fruit in his cat nap bowl- what else would you have him do?

ErrolTheDragon · 18/07/2019 22:40

Ok... would it be easier to identify who owns both cats and a fruit bowl and doesn't ever find the former sitting in the latter ( or a suspiciously large number of hairs?)Grin

StickybeakSiameezie · 18/07/2019 22:41

I have two Siamese kittens who regularly race up and down the curtains Angry Id be thrilled if they just sat in the fruit bowl rather than the tray or sleeping in the laundry baskets of freshly dried clothes.

LucheroTena · 18/07/2019 22:44

Just blow off the hairs and rub em on yer sleeve, no?

devilinme · 18/07/2019 22:48

This is where they're supposed to sleep, all tucked up in bed

Evidently I’m going against the grain here, but I think YANBU!

My cat does not go on the surfaces and definitely not in serving bowls. Neither does she go in the pram/bouncy chair/playmat/baby box. Maybe I’m not cut out to be a cat lady.... she keeps coming back though so it can’t be that bad.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 18/07/2019 22:50

My cats wouldn't consider sleeping anywhere as healthy as a fruit bowl.

Can't tell if YABU until you show a photo OP!

VenusClapTrap · 18/07/2019 22:51

I’m disappointed my cat has never slept in my fruit bowl now. What’s wrong with my fruit bowl? Do I need to buy a new one?

devilinme · 18/07/2019 22:51

Showing off the cats now

SisyphusDad · 18/07/2019 22:57

Sorry but YABTU to think you are entitled to an opinion as to where a cat chooses to sleep.

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 18/07/2019 23:06

I have a cat.

She is most definitely not allowed on tables or kitchen units. She tries every now and then but jumps down the second she's up. It's gross. Being indoor isn't any better because they step on their own pee (or poop too depending on how often the tray is cleared) when using a cat litter tray.

I had tea with a very posh friend of my mum's once. We're talking China cups and saucers, teapot, sugar cubes and cucumber sandwiches. All that fuss to make it nice and she let her cat get up on the table, rubbing itself all over the cups, sugar cubes and food. I found it funny that she was so particular about her presentation and didn't care about the cat being all over it. 🤢

Seeingadistance · 18/07/2019 23:11

I'd never thought about it before, but it does seem that the fruit bowl is the one place my cats don't sleep.

MoreOfADogPerson · 18/07/2019 23:15

Paging @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats - next logical step for ThugCat??

EileenAlanna · 18/07/2019 23:16

The only reasonable response to a cat's choice of bed is amazement at how adorable they look there, and pathetic gratitude that they continue to consider your home worthy enough of them to stay in it. I'm from a family of cat lovers going back many generations & while I'm currently bereft of cats these pics have brought a little tear to my eye. Thank you, ladies, for making an old woman a little happier.

Longdistance · 18/07/2019 23:19

My cat never went on work surfaces or on furniture. He was only ever on the floor or carpet. He’d lie on the stairs watching me though. He was very much an outdoors cat as he had cat friends.
