To ask why people feel the need to shop in their gym clothes?

I'm sure it has been asked before but as the title says...why do people feel the need to walk around shops in their sweaty gym clothes?

Do so many people not have time to shower and change after a workout but then manage to find the time to walk around shops? Are they the same people who like to take selfies in gyms to post on social media?

I suppose each to their own and at least gym clothes are better than pyjamas!

I also go in my riding clothes which are far more offensive than my gym stuff
If I had to go in "normal" clothes I would never shop!

MIdgebabe · 17/07/2019 17:27

I find it take a few hours from sweat to smell. Bacteria need to breed first. So sweaty gym clothes is not the same as stinking or dirty.

Although dripping sweaty would be unpleasant and possibly unhygienic

floodypuddle · 17/07/2019 17:28

My gym had two showers which are totally open to the changing room so i would rather shower at home but it is right next to a Morrison's and i don't really live near a supermarket so it's handy to pick things up. Otherwise it would be a while other journey. I do feel a bit embarrassed so I kind of run in and out with what I want though.

Somersetlady · 17/07/2019 17:28

i go in my horse riding clothes. You wouldnt approve of me I’m sure!

I do it because shop is normally on the way home. Not suite the same as gym as most venues don't have showers.

stucknoue · 17/07/2019 17:28

I go on the way home from my class. I shower when I get home. There's no shower facilities there (church hall)

littlepeas · 17/07/2019 17:29

I’m a yoga teacher, so for me it’s no different to people wearing their suit to the supermarket......I’m generally in kit all day, every day - some days I teach one class at 7am and then another at 7pm, in between I might plan classes, do my own practice, spend ten minutes trying something out...it’s convenient to stay in kit. If I get sweaty I might shower and put on more kit! It does mean that when I have to wear normal clothes they feel really uncomfortable. I also have a disproportionate amount of yoga gear vs ordinary clothes.

GinDaddy · 17/07/2019 17:30

I think OP is being unreasonable, however I’ve seen a huge increase in gymwear being fashionable - especially Lycra stretched gym trousers/tights

I think the Kardashians may have had a major part to play, often noticed they’re papped around LA etc in gymwear, and because their body type is considered “curvy” (however natural or enhanced) then it empowered a whole lot of people perhaps.

AllOverIt · 17/07/2019 17:30

Oh who the fuck cares OP?

Athleisure is now a popular style of clothing.

Also we don’t magically teleport to the gym and back home. I live 10 minutes away and I walk there and back and shower at home.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 17/07/2019 17:33

because it's quicker to shop before going home?

PeriComoToes · 17/07/2019 17:33

Because I don't give a fuck!

fromdownwest · 17/07/2019 17:33

I've been doing it all wrong - run for an hour on my local trail then pick up some bits and bobs from the local supermarket prior to driving home.

To ensure OP is not offended, I will run for an hour, pop home, shower and pop on a ball gown. Then drive back to the shops, park up, buy milk, then drive home. Safe in the knowledge that the OP has not have to endure the triggering of walking past someone red in the face in yoga pants.

This country...

Branleuse · 17/07/2019 17:33

I dont always, but sometimes i nip to the supermarket on the way home from the gym, cos i dont want to have to go out again later.

Is that OK with you?

MsScribbles · 17/07/2019 17:36

I don’t go to a gym, I go for a run or a Zumba class. No showers available. I go to the shops in my workout gear because it’s convenient. Sometimes I wear workout clothes all day so I can take the opportunity to run/do a workout vid if I have a spare 30 mins.
I think it’s great that doing exercise has become so much the norm that people go to the shops in their gym clothes.

ChiefOfStaph · 17/07/2019 17:36

@Duchessgummybuns that's hilarious!

Like I said each to their own...it's not offensive, I just don't 'get it' just as I don't get why people go out in PJs.

Doje · 17/07/2019 17:37

It's the trend now, innit! As PP said, a lot of these clothes have never actually been into a gym.

I'd seen the 'Active wear' video but didn't think it really happened, but then went to meet my sister and she was shopping in Primark in her active wear! For real!! I asked her if she'd just been for a run, but no, she said it was just comfy!

boooey · 17/07/2019 17:37

I’ll sometimes put gym clothes on well before a class so that I’m more likely to go to the class! Then I may run errands wearing those clothes before I go. I don’t wear gym clothes to work obviously. There’s a retail park near me that has lots of shops and a big gym- OP would not be happy !

Grin love this!!

MolyHolyGuacamole · 17/07/2019 17:39

I don't ACTUALLY work out in my gym clothes Blush

pictish · 17/07/2019 17:42

You don’t have to ‘get it’. No one cares what you make of it at all.

Besides, it’s not a difficult concept to ‘get’ anyway. The people you are referring to are on their way to or from an activity. They don’t have to get changed so you can understand that. It’s simple and none of your business.

Did that sink in?

floribunda18 · 17/07/2019 17:43

In my experience it isn't done for fashion or a trend, it's practicality.

ContactLight · 17/07/2019 17:43

Many's the time I turned up in Tesco's in jodhpurs and muddy riding boots, and with bits of straw in my hair - but I wouldn't have gone anywhere other than the supermarket or corner shop looking like that. Well, possibly McDonalds Grin

mathanxiety · 17/07/2019 17:43

How do you know that someone wearing jeans and a T-shirt hasn't spent the morning in those clothes while clearing out an attic or mowing a lawn with a pushmower?

fishonabicycle · 17/07/2019 17:44

I prefer to shower at home - also I don't want to have to carry a towel and washing stuff and all my clothes with me.

megletthesecond · 17/07/2019 17:44

Because I walk home from the gym and shower there.
Bit of shopping and errands before and after my class.
