To ask why people feel the need to shop in their gym clothes?

I'm sure it has been asked before but as the title says...why do people feel the need to walk around shops in their sweaty gym clothes?

Do so many people not have time to shower and change after a workout but then manage to find the time to walk around shops? Are they the same people who like to take selfies in gyms to post on social media?

I suppose each to their own and at least gym clothes are better than pyjamas!

Gym clothes (or athleisure) is currently very on trend. (Do people still say 'on trend'?)

I don't think 'gym clothes' necessarily means that someone is just off the floor, someone could be on their way to the gym and therefore not sweaty yet. But I have seen people shopping, in the park with their DC, picking DC up from school etc in gymwear. It's possible they are just coming back from a 'bums n tums' class but I reckon lots of people are just wearing sporty clothes because they like the look, find it comfy and maybe in the heat they don't want to ruin their naice clothes if they're doing errands or on the school run.

DontCallMeShitley · 17/07/2019 17:06

I wear 'active' clothes, leggings, trainers and vest tops. I never go to the gym. I just want to be comfortable.

HopelessLayout · 17/07/2019 17:06

I used to go running and then go into the convenience shop on the way home to get a drink. I never considered whether my sweaty clothes and red face would offend anyone. Oh dear!

speakout · 17/07/2019 17:07

I usually shop in gym clothes- the supermarket is next to my gym, I prefer to shower at home.

Why do you care?

DeadBod · 17/07/2019 17:07

I went to the gym at 9am for yoga and then did my shopping in Morrisons next door. I'm still in my gym gear as I've been gardening and doing housework. Once tea is over I'll go for a shower and get straight into my pyjamas.
Why does it bother you?

EleanorOalike · 17/07/2019 17:08

It never occurred to me that people would judge others based on them wearing active wear to the gym.

How do you know they are sweaty or if they’ve even been to the gym. I know people who wear active wear because it’s less restrictive on a day to day basis when they aren’t working or doing anything special that requires more formal clothing.

EleanorOalike · 17/07/2019 17:09

*to the supermarket that should say above

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 17/07/2019 17:09

They might not have been yet, maybe they're on their way to the gym. I go late afternoon/evening so if I have other stuff to do first I just put my gym clothes on when I get dressed, go do what needs doing and drive straight to the gym from there rather than having to go home and get changed.

I don't see why you even notice tbh. It's not like they're indecent. I wear leggings, trainers and a long t shirt. Obviously exercise clothes but otherwise unremarkable. I went shopping today and I honestly couldn't tell you what a single other person was wearing.

TwoPupsandaHamster · 17/07/2019 17:10

alot of people just wear gym gear because it's comfortable. Doesn't mean they've been for a sweaty workout then gone straight out

This ^^

My teenage DD spends 90% of her time in "gym clothes". That doesn't mean she spends all her time in the gym getting sweaty and smelly before going to Tesco 🤷‍♀️

Yesterday I encountered a family of 4 at 2pm (approx) winding their way around the Tesco aisles. Mum, dad, child approx 4 and child aged approx 18months - all in their pj's. That was a bit strange.... at least gym clothes are considered to be daytime wear.

justrestinginmybankaccount · 17/07/2019 17:10

Is there something wrong with wearing gym clothes in the supermarket?

Are we suppose to wear supermarket shopping clothes in the supermarket?

Pinktinker · 17/07/2019 17:12

The supermarket near my old house had a gym in the same building. People get hungry after working out. I don’t think many people change straight after the gym, they go home to wash and change unless they’re going to work after.

CurbsideProphet · 17/07/2019 17:12

I think a full family outing to tesco on a weekend is worse than people wearing gym clothes Grin

Get your shopping delivered like me and you won't have to see any of them Wink

floribunda18 · 17/07/2019 17:12

Because they need to buy stuff on the way back from their workout. I used to run with a group and we didn't have showers. Not all exercise is done in a gym with access to a shower. And even if it is, it's often nicer to shower a home.

And even straight after a workout I probably smell nicer than a lot of people out there.

AllFourOfThem · 17/07/2019 17:14

Some people don’t shower or wash, or do so very rarely, so OP is it acceptable in your opinion for these people to shop in office attire even though they may have a stronger body odour?

speakout · 17/07/2019 17:15

OP by "people" vdo you mean "women"? Hmm

Jinglejanglefish · 17/07/2019 17:18

I never shower and change at the gym, I'd much rather go home sweaty and have a lovely shower in my own bathroom.

Duchessgummybuns · 17/07/2019 17:18

Sorry if it’s been posted already

BasinHaircut · 17/07/2019 17:19

I can’t imagine why it bothers you.

Even if a bit smelly after a workout (I definitely sweat when I do weights BTW) what harm is it doing anyone.

My gym is a bit basic in that respect, it has one toilet and no showers so I can’t shower there. I drive past the supermarket on the way home.

To be fair, I also do hot yoga so come out of there literally dripping with sweat. If I need to pop to the shops on those days I’ll do it before class (but still in kit).

WhatchaMaCalllit · 17/07/2019 17:19

Here you go @ChiefofStaph:

Lordamighty · 17/07/2019 17:19

I call into the nearby supermarket on my way home from the gym & I really don’t give a toss about what anyone else thinks about my choice of outfit.

DaisyChainsGetBroken · 17/07/2019 17:19

I dont work out in a gym. I do it in a park/round streets with a running group. No showers on streets.

Sometimes nip to shop on way home.

Sometimes its park of my cool down as I walk there on way home.

nothanksbyenow · 17/07/2019 17:22

I do it plenty, because the supermarket is so near where I exercise it’s not worth the fuel going home and back again. Better for the planet really!

Have you been sniffing people in the shops? Weirdo. Grin

itbemay · 17/07/2019 17:23

Because I go to the shops after the gym as they are next to each other? I am not going to go home and shower just to please you OP! I am hardly sweating all over the shop.

MichelleC69 · 17/07/2019 17:24

I quite often call into Tesco Express on my way home from the gym, in gym clothes, to grab some lunch. I prefer to shower at home as it saves me taking towels/clean clothes/toiletries etc etc to the gym. Not sure why it should offend anyone tbh, I'm hardly doing a full-on shopping trip whilst I'm sweaty!!

Runbitchrun · 17/07/2019 17:25

Because I couldn’t give a fuck what judgy pants like you think about my clothing/exercise/shopping choices.
