What is the meaning of life - in very simple terms

Why do some people get to be born in such happy gentle and supportive families and live such happy lives being oh so happy and gentle and supportive.
Why do some of us grow up with absolutely shit parents who give us no support; who we actively have to try and overcome just to live a non-criminal and non drain on society life.
Why are some born so beautiful. Life at their feet just because of how they look.
Are most of us just meant to be ordinary. Struggling through life and then dying with no real thought of what it was all about.
Is there a higher purpose we should think about everyday - those of us already seemingly confined to an "ordinary life". But circumstances shouldn't really constrain us from knowing something more meaningful.
Does this make any sense at all?

Sorry, that was a reference to the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. And a bit flippant, now I've thought about it.
I get what you mean though. Some people seem to glide through life, with not a thing going wrong, whereas others seem to get nothing but bad karma.
You make perfect sense.

BeachComber1 · 17/07/2019 10:28

None of what you’ve written is anything to do with life, it’s to do with the society we’ve created.

Don’t overthink life. At the end of the day, we’re basically glorified bacteria with an overinflated sense of our own importance.

MyFokMarelize · 17/07/2019 10:29

It really is the eternal and unsolvable puzzle isn't it? Luck of the draw or design? Nobody knows.
Some believe in a higher power - an order to things and a reason for things. Some don't.
I guess just try to live a good life with respect for living creatures and the environment. Do good, not bad. Be at peace with yourself. What more can you do?

Elliebellbell · 17/07/2019 10:30

There isn't one, you just have to play the cards you're dealt, the alternative is an eternal void. I'll continue with my personal game of poker and hope for the best.

Lotuslots · 17/07/2019 10:41

I want all of us to find a meaning. I am now 50 - and that is when you think that you are over half way in life. It cant just be a succession of decisions with no actual realisations and no actual higher thought. Why the fuck are we here then?
Its not just play your cards. Its on a higher level then that. You are cutting your life short if you just say that is what I was dealt You absolutely have the right to rise it.

@Dexterslockedintheshedagain my 1st thought was also 42 followed very swiftly by the Monty python team singing every sperm is sacred.

maddening · 17/07/2019 10:45

Survival through luck, design, judgement or skill, whether a human or an animal.

Whosorrynow · 17/07/2019 10:48

I don't really understand the question can you elaborate, for instance when you say 'why does this happen' do you mean what causes it happen or do you mean, for what purpose does it happen
You seem to be meaning for what purpose does it happen but if that's the case you are begging the question, the question of whether or not there is a purpose.

What reason do you have to suppose that life has an overarching meaning or a purpose?

when you talk about the meaning of life do you mean the meaning of human life, the meaning of amoeba lives or tree lives or what exactly?

Elliebellbell · 17/07/2019 10:48

Take it easy op. You're not going to find the meaning of life anywhere, least of all on an Internet forum.
If you're having some existential crisis there are actually group meet ups where you can discuss it in depth.
Regardless of what you believe, you have to play the hand you're dealt. Some of us are better bluffers than others.

Pootles34 · 17/07/2019 10:49

There isn't one. But we're here now, so may as well have a nice time, and make sure those around us do too.

Lotuslots · 17/07/2019 10:50

Oh ffs. Will go off somewhere else.

OP posts:
Elliebellbell · 17/07/2019 10:53

Please do and don't forget to come back and tell us all what it is when you find it 🤣

Ithinkmycatisevil · 17/07/2019 10:56

Damn it.... someone already said 42!

In all seriousness. As individuals our lives (well for most of us) don’t really have any great meaning. We are unlikely to do anything that changes the world or goes down in history. Doesn’t mean that our lives don’t have for us and those around us though.

Life is just about living the best life you can, loving family and friends and trying to be happy. That’s it really.

CareerChaos · 17/07/2019 10:57

I think the meaning of life is simply happiness, not breaking your back the whole time to achieve perfect 100% of the time happiness (it doesn't exist) but finding joy in the small things and the big. Laughing, having fun and making others happy.

As you can see by my name my job doesn't currently make me happy so i'm looking to change it.

Lotuslots · 17/07/2019 11:00

Absolutely have fucked off from this thread. Congrats to you. How damned stupid was I...

Whosorrynow · 17/07/2019 11:02

The meaning of life is to develop tolerance patience and understanding, you've got a long way to go OP

madcatladyforever · 17/07/2019 11:03

I don't know OP. My life has been a struggle too. My priority is not doing a job I loathe. That is mind numbing horror I do not want to repeat.
I will only do work I like.
Secondly my home is somewhere I make amazing and comfortable with lots of cushions and throws however humble it is so itsimple always my refuge.
Thirdly I get great joy in my religion. A form of paganism.
Everything else I just shut out or if it irks me I get rid of it.
I also never wish for what I haven't got as it's a waste of thinking and wishing. Just try to be the best you can.

Elliebellbell · 17/07/2019 11:03

This is hilarious 😂 congratulations op, your weird, stroppy demands for a bunch of randoms to answer an unanswerable question that has defeated philosophers for thousands of years has cracked me up.

Lotuslots · 17/07/2019 11:04

oh fuck off whosorrynow. Even your name is shit.

Lotuslots · 17/07/2019 11:06

Yeah ok. I am absolutely getting the drift now. If Mumsnet can delete this thread please do. I am an idiot for having these thoughts and daring to say it out loud.

OP posts:
Elliebellbell · 17/07/2019 11:07

Lol 😂 this thread will cease to be very soon. Probably along with the op's site membership.

Lotuslots · 17/07/2019 11:07

I apologise for being so stupid in starting this thread.
