To really want a full glass dining table?

I have bought some crystal Kartell ghost chairs and would love a clear glass table to match? Does anyone have one who can advise whether this is a good idea?

Not a good idea at all. They scratch really easily and look 5 years old in 5 months.

Agree with @Zippyx. We went one stupider and bought black glass 😩 impossible to clean AND ridiculously scratched. Don't ask me how - I have no clue.

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/07/2019 12:48

We used to have one and didn’t find it scratched at all - although it was coated with something and we always used placemats and coasters on it and didn’t use it as a dumping ground for other stuff when not in use.

It was, however, a magnet for fingerprints and smudges - I spent more time than I wanted to scrubbing at it with a micro fibre cloth!

Overall, I really liked it as it was a large 10-seater and the clear glass meant it didn’t look like a giant hulk in the room, which I thought wood would.

I love my glass table, when it's not covered in stuff (rarely) it makes my small dining room look really spacious.

Unburnished · 15/07/2019 12:52

Oh god no. Just don't.

They show every smear and spec of dust and they're freezing cold to lean on (yes, I know about elbows but still...)

They also confuse animals and small children who try to jump up 'through' them, not realising that the glass is there.

Pinktinker · 15/07/2019 12:53

Sounds awful, will be covered in smears in no time (and dirty handprints if you have young children).

theconstantinoplegardener · 15/07/2019 12:54

Do you have small children? DD has a scar on her forehead after running into the corner of someone's glass table. The table was quite hard to see from toddler height.

Livebythecoast · 15/07/2019 13:03

I have one that seats 6. It does look lovely with a white runner and a nice vase of fresh flowers! BUT, yes, I'm forever cleaning it, smudges, finger prints. It's never scratched though.
My friend suggested getting a table cloth but that kinda defeats the whole point of the glass effect!

Bluntness100 · 15/07/2019 13:07

I have an all glass coffee table from Marks and Sparks in the play room and it looks as good as the day we bought it, no scratches. I have a large glass coffee table in the living room and it is scratched.

I think it's a bit hit and miss to be honest, but if you go for the highest quality you can you will probably fair better.

Twickerhun · 15/07/2019 13:08

No we had one pre kids was a bigger to clean

Etino · 15/07/2019 13:08

I had this one and it was lovely. noisy though! Never had problems with cleaning and I'm no Mrs Hinch Grin

Yes. I stayed in a holiday home with one recently and it drove me crazy. They had a table cloth over it. I also have ghost chairs - stools in the kitchen and tbh I spend a fair bit of time getting rid of fingerpints from them too.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 15/07/2019 13:19

Oh god, don't! They look awful!

echt · 15/07/2019 13:39

God, sounds horrible.

Could someone post a pic of an RL one (not an ad) that actually looks good? And by this I mean not with a cloth on, as the cloth means it essentially looks shite.

Witchesandwizards · 15/07/2019 14:48

My mum and dad have a glass table in their kitchen and it looks terrible when we are there with the kids. It's also really noisy and the table cloth slips easily.

Did you see the "What makes a person common?" thread...

DixieLandReject · 15/07/2019 20:56

No small children but I’m not the most careful myself so am worried about scratches. I don’t want to spend a fortune for it to look old within months!

I’d love to see pics of a real life one after a few months.

MWNA - no, must have missed that Hmm

I'm not keen - also when you sit down, your thighs spread and look really fat!!

But then i'm old fashioned (and on the chubby side!)

CellularBlanket · 15/07/2019 21:02

When everybody is sitting at them can you see fat knees? (Never eaten at one)

CellularBlanket · 15/07/2019 21:02

Cross post ! Grin

DixieLandReject · 15/07/2019 21:04

Grin at fat knees, I would probably use place mats when eating. I am between the glass table or limed wood refectory table.

I like the glass due to the illusion of space and think the wood might be too bulky.

Nightmare to clean. Was fine when I was a singleton but not so much when the dcs were young. It never ever looks clean.

DixieLandReject · 15/07/2019 21:07

The cleaning I think I can cope with, I’m more concerned with the scratches. I know that obviously the more careful we are the less scratches however, I wouldn’t like the slightest thing to mark it and it end up looking ancient in a short space of time.

I’m leaning towards the wood for practicality purposes.
