"Washing liquid"

We have a list on the fridge that we add things to if we're running out of them so that we have the start of a shopping list when we go to the supermarket. Today I went shopping and husband had written "washing liquid" on the list. So I bought some washing up liquid and when I got home he was genuinely puzzled. What he meant was laundry detergent but couldn't see for the life of him why I'd misinterpreted. Is it just me or is he bonkers? Confused

He’s bonkers. Sounds related to my husband it’s the sort of daft thing he’d do!

DickZillaofTheVilla · 09/07/2019 18:17

I’d have thought washing up liquid from that too

BullBullBull · 09/07/2019 18:18

I’d have bought washing up liquid

Icedlatte · 09/07/2019 18:19

This is from tesco's app.
You both have correct terms. You should probably apologise to him for your disbelief.

Is her northern?
I tend to say washing powder so can see that washing liquid would make sense

BigRedLondonBus · 09/07/2019 18:20

That made me laugh, I don’t know anyone who calls laundry detergent “washing liquid” I would have thought he meant washing up liquid as well!

FelicityBeedle · 09/07/2019 18:20

I say washing liquid too. Washing is pretty much always dirty clothes so makes sense to me to say washing liquid

implantsandaDyson · 09/07/2019 18:20

I would have bought washing powder. I've just asked my husband - he would have bought washing powder too.

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 09/07/2019 18:21

Washing is laundry. Washing liquid is for laundry in my book too sorry

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 09/07/2019 18:21

Washing liquid is laundry detergent on our list. It is rather ambiguous if it's not the term usually used.

NomDeQwerty · 09/07/2019 18:21

I call washing liquid washing liquid ie liquid for the washing. Washing up liquid is for the washing up.

4under4our · 09/07/2019 18:21

@Icedlatte Are you OP's husband? 😂

newmomof1 · 09/07/2019 18:22

I don't understand people who say they'd have bought washing powder when it clearly said liquid!

I'd have got washing up liquid

SnugglySnerd · 09/07/2019 18:22

I agree with your husband, that's what we call it.

BiscuitDrama · 09/07/2019 18:22

If you use liquid laundry stuff then I’d call it washing liquid.

Todaythiscouldbe · 09/07/2019 18:23

Washing liquid is laundry detergent
Washing up liquid is for dishes
My husband often gets washing up liquid when I want washing liquid, drives me mad 😂

TheFairyCaravan · 09/07/2019 18:23

Washing liquid goes in the washing machine. Washing up liquid washes dishes.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 09/07/2019 18:23

Washing liquid would mean for the washing machine to me.

Probably say 'Fairy' if I meant washing up liquid. Even though we don't use Fairy Hmm

SmallPinkBear · 09/07/2019 18:23

This would never be an issue in my house (as DH doesn’t ever add anything to the list - or do washing) but I would think washing liquid was detergent... but can easily see how you thought it was washing up liquid

MontyBowJangles · 09/07/2019 18:24

I say washing liquid.

Also say Fairy when I mean cheap Lidl/Aldi version.

Vibiano · 09/07/2019 18:25

Washing liquid is laundry detergent.

Siameasy · 09/07/2019 18:25

It’s ambiguous to me
I have acronyms which he doesn’t get
WUL
NPR
EMUR
I prefer to deal with shopping as something is always missed off if the man attends

HeronLanyon · 09/07/2019 18:25

Dishes - in a list ‘dish wash’ spoken that or sometimes ‘washing UP liquid’
Clothes - on a list ‘clothes wash’ or spoken ‘washing powder’ or ‘clothes wash’

Complex ! Who knew ?

FrenchyQ · 09/07/2019 18:26

We all call it washing liquid in our house...thought that was quite normal!

QforCucumber · 09/07/2019 18:26

I just asked dh -he said straight away 'washing powder liquid, if I wanted washing up liquid I'd have written fairy' however I'm with you op
