"Washing liquid"

We have a list on the fridge that we add things to if we're running out of them so that we have the start of a shopping list when we go to the supermarket. Today I went shopping and husband had written "washing liquid" on the list. So I bought some washing up liquid and when I got home he was genuinely puzzled. What he meant was laundry detergent but couldn't see for the life of him why I'd misinterpreted. Is it just me or is he bonkers? Confused

Washing up liquid and laundry liquid here, however I would have probably bought both if faced with 'washing liquid' and asked later.

I write w/up liquid and laundry liquid but I always specify which laundry stuff or pick it out myself otherwise heaven knows what we would end up with and some of that stuff really stinks badly to the point of being vomit inducing.

DitheringBlidiot · 09/07/2019 19:19

I’d say washing powder, even though I use liquid and call washing up liquid washing up liquid so I don’t think my input is valid here!

Eliza9919 · 09/07/2019 19:21

I'd have got liquid washing detergent.

Washing up liquid is called washing up liquid or fairy in our house.

DrCoconut · 09/07/2019 19:26

Washing liquid is for washing - clothes, towels etc. Washing up liquid is for washing up - dishes, pots, pans etc. May be different depending on area.

notacooldad · 09/07/2019 19:33

I'm with your DH
Washing liquid for clothes
washing up liquid for dishes!

LondonJax · 09/07/2019 19:36

Yep, Washing liquid for clothes and washing up liquid for dishes here too! Sorry!

InMySpareTime · 09/07/2019 19:38

We call it Laundry Liquid after a similar misunderstanding.

Ohyesiam · 09/07/2019 19:40

I would have looked to see if we needed WUL or laundry liquid. Because I’m perfect peter.

HeronLanyon · 09/07/2019 19:53

I have never called clothes wash ‘washing liquid’ - it’s ‘clothes wash’ or ‘washing powder’ (even though it is sometimes a liquid). Confused

I have never called anything ‘washing liquid’ and don’t think have ever heard that. I would have to ask what was meant although I would err towards clothes wash.

I call ‘dish wash’ just that or sometimes ‘washing up liquid’.

Zoflorabore · 09/07/2019 19:53

I like what the Americans call washing up liquid- dish soap. No confusion there.

They also tend to say laundry detergent.
I watch far too many American YouTube cleaning videos and it's easy to start using their little words and phrases without meaning to Grin

My slightly thick NDN calls it "fairy up liquid"

catofdoom · 09/07/2019 19:58

But then they also call a bin a waste paper bin. And glasses - eye glasses. Sets me teeth right on edge.

And riding - horseback riding. Angry

What could T.roll be if not toilet roll? (Or "Bumf" as me Dad used to call it!)

MrsDimmond · 09/07/2019 19:59

washing liquid for clothes
washing upliquid for dishes

StCharlotte · 09/07/2019 19:59

*my Dad

catofdoom · 09/07/2019 20:01

I told DH to get egg noddles as I was making Chinese.

I specified 'egg' noodles because a lot of Americans call pasta 'noodles'. Even fucking penne or shells!!

He came home with pasta. AngryAngryAngryAngryAngry To be fair they said 'egg noddles' on the packet but if said for Chinese!

EllieMentry · 09/07/2019 20:02

We've always said washing liquid for the laundry (used to be washing powder) and washing-up liquid for the dishes.

Laiste · 09/07/2019 20:11

I've just read this whole thread and now the word 'liquid' has no meaning Grin

sqeakywheel · 09/07/2019 20:13

I'd have bought laundry detergent.

tealady20 · 09/07/2019 20:15

My clueless other half rings me and said 'what's a Troll you want from the shop ?' Oh LORD🤦🏼‍♀️ t.roll toilet roll !!!! Omg !!

HeronLanyon · 09/07/2019 21:01

zoflorabore ‘fairy up liquid’ - that really really made me laugh. Thank you - thank ndn.

laiste Grin me too !

catofdoom struck a chord ! just today made childhood American recipe my ma made a lot calling for ‘noodles’.

Had to have long discussion with sibling as to our memory of whether it should be dried Chinese, egg Chinese, egg fresh pasta, dried pasta. - bloody hell !

My lovely departed ma who wrote really helpful notes on all recipes just wrote next to this one ‘lovely!’ Confused
