"Washing liquid"

We have a list on the fridge that we add things to if we're running out of them so that we have the start of a shopping list when we go to the supermarket. Today I went shopping and husband had written "washing liquid" on the list. So I bought some washing up liquid and when I got home he was genuinely puzzled. What he meant was laundry detergent but couldn't see for the life of him why I'd misinterpreted. Is it just me or is he bonkers? Confused

I would have said that “washing liquid” is liquid for washing, ie: laundry liquid.

Washing up liquid is just that. It’s usually on our shopping list as WUL.

NavyBerry · 09/07/2019 18:26

I used washing liquid once and was misunderstood. But I'm not native.

HeronLanyon · 09/07/2019 18:27

‘Washing powder liquid’ Grin trouble is I know exactly what he means. How does anyone learn English, eh. Oh perhaps it’s more of a case of we all just muddle along !

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/07/2019 18:28

I'd have bought liquid for washing clothes. Washing up liquid would have made me pick up stuff for washing plates etc.

AnonymousMugwumpery · 09/07/2019 18:28

I'd have bought liquid laundry detergent but to be fair, I would probably have called him to ask whether it was for whites or coloured, so it would have come out then.

origamiunicorn · 09/07/2019 18:29

I instantly thought washing up liquid. I'd think he just wrote it wrong. I've never called laundry stuff, washing liquid? It's laundry detergent, abs or powder surely.

I just looked on Tesco online and they do call it, washing liquid. Who knew.

bridgetreilly · 09/07/2019 18:29

I still call it washing powder, even though I always buy liquid. But I'd definitely have understood it to be for laundry, not dishes.

Washing and washing-up are the key terms here, and you misunderstood that.

drizzleinbrizzle · 09/07/2019 18:35

I would get detergent for clothes with that description. Dish washing requires W-up Liquid.

SillyBub · 09/07/2019 18:35

Washing liquid in this house means laundry detergent.

hannah9176 · 09/07/2019 18:41

I would have thought washing up liquid and DH would say the same. Maybe we're in the minority but at least we're in agreement Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 09/07/2019 18:42

Washing liquid = clothes washing here too. The missing word is the clue!

Pepperwand · 09/07/2019 18:45

Well there you go, every day is a school day! Shock

I would have brought laundry detergent.

I write "fairy" or "washing up liquid" for dish washing liquid. Though I also buy Fairy for washing clothes so I tend to write "non-bio" and a brand name like "Daz" or "Surf" then buy the cheapest.

tealady20 · 09/07/2019 18:50

If you put on a list T.Roll what would u think it was ?? My partner clearly got it completely wrong !!! How thick

foreverhanging · 09/07/2019 18:52

Yup I would have done the same op !

Lauren83 · 09/07/2019 18:54

I would of thought he meant for the washing machine too sorry!

Doobigetta · 09/07/2019 18:56

I call it washing liquid. I thought “laundry detergent” was one of those things real people never say, like vacuum cleaner.

Anotherusefulname · 09/07/2019 18:58

Washing Liquid is definitely the stuff that goes in the washing machine. It would not cross my mind to get washing up liquid. Two very different things.

catofdoom · 09/07/2019 18:58

Washing liquid is laundry detergent.

Washing up liquid or Fairy is dish soap. I'm in the States now so nobody get fairy at all. Lots of blank stares.

Kenworthington · 09/07/2019 19:00

I say washing liquid for laundry liquid too. If I meant washing up liquid that’s what I would have written.

fedup21 · 09/07/2019 19:04

This would never be an issue in my house (as DH doesn’t ever add anything to the list-or do washing)

Snap Grin

Aprillygirl · 09/07/2019 19:10

I would have understood what your husband meant by washing liquid, though I don't get why he was puzzled at you misinterpreting it, just as I don't understand your bewilderment really. Don't worry about it so much OP, it'll all come out in the wash {ba dum chhh}

Bunnybigears · 09/07/2019 19:12

For us washing liquid is for laundry washing up liquid is for dishes.

flamingjune123 · 09/07/2019 19:13

In our house it's washing up liquid for cleaning dishes
It's washing powder for cleaning clothes ( even though it's liquid!)
So in this case I would have bought washing up liquid same as you

Merryoldgoat · 09/07/2019 19:16

I call laundry detergent washing liquid too.
