Letting them sleep in

All the family including the kids were hay baling last night until 10pm. It was all hands on deck since rain is forecast for today which would be very detrimental to the process if we left it half done. It was getting towards midnight when we all got to bed.

Needless to say the kids were still absolutely fast asleep at the usual get up time, so I've let them sleep in. I've phoned the school and left a message on the absences voicemail explaining the situation and saying that I will let them sleep for a reasonable time and bring them in as soon as I see fit.

AIBU to do this?

I should add that their attendance record is otherwise excellent.

My parents always had me at school, no matter what - you're too soft Wink

I remember being that age and bagging up big bales of silage at midnight. No lights other than when the tractor came back, ooo yes and it's brakes were rubbish too so that made things interesting Grin

Leading the small hay bales was my absolute favourite, knackered, smelly, sweaty, cut knees and hands (if you got the wrong side) the smell of it all diesel and hay was fab. My Dad liked to 'wing it' and use as little rope as possible sometimes none, you had to stack it right!

Bloody loved it, my DCs don't know they're born! I didn't marry a farmer, it's a world away from how my DH grew up he just can't get his head round it.

Ah! I know what you mean now @shesgrownhorns. My DC have all operated similar from around that age, it really builds confidence in them.

I would definitely have sent them into school on time. But then again I'm pretty strict.

Surprised at the amount of people saying you shouldn't have let the kids help you out. People have gone awfully soft. I bet they had a great time and I also bet that they don't suffer with any obesity problems because of all the outdoor exercise they get. It's so good for their physical and mental health.
