Do you all think that 100 pound is enough

FluffyTabbycat · 08/07/2019 22:17

So basically after ALL bills including food, petrol, daughter's hobby, I have one hundred pound to live off... Per week... Single mother off two, one 8 year old and a baby.
What do u guys think.

Sounds more than enough to me

Twillow · 08/07/2019 22:19

Depends how lavishly you expect to live i.e. do you buy a lot of clothes, go out socially. Even then I'd be happy with it right now.

Twillow · 08/07/2019 22:20

I'm not going to vote though as it sounds like a reverse gaining evidence for maintenance??

Gazelda · 08/07/2019 22:22

I presume it has to cover gifts, clothing, trips, haircuts, holidays etc? That sounds plenty.
But have you factored in school uniform, school trips, prescriptions, household repairs? If possible, I'd save half of that £100 for a rainy day.

haveuheard · 08/07/2019 22:23

Sounds like a lot to me.

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/07/2019 22:23

No it’s not much for travel, birthdays ,Christmas, holidays, repairs and replacement of household items, clothes days out etc.
£200 would be ok.

Letthemysterybe · 08/07/2019 22:23

What is that £100 supposed to cover? Are you saving anything?

bluebluezoo · 08/07/2019 22:26

I have about that left after mortgage and utilities.

I pay food, petrol, hobbies etc out of it.

It’s more than enough if it’s just “for spends”. £400 a month for what? Coffee, clothes, haircuts? All things you can skip if you need to save.

musicposy · 08/07/2019 22:27

It's a nice amount if every single other expense really is covered. But what about emergency expenses e.g. something breaks down, daughter has a school trip, gets her school jumper taken, grows out of her shoes quickly etc etc. How are you covering those kinds of things? Because my answer really depends upon whether you also have a good buffer for a rainy day.

Hermagsjesty · 08/07/2019 22:27

I think that’s enough to just spend if it doesn’t need to include food but it may make it hard to save for holidays/ emergencies.

EmperorBallpitine · 08/07/2019 22:30

Sounds OK but a bit difficult for everything if including holidays and emergency savings.

BackforGood · 08/07/2019 22:30

Depends what you need it tocover.
If it is just "spends" -treats, etc - then it is a HUGE amount

If it includes savings for emergency breakdowns; things like MOT, insurances, annual payments like TV licence; replacing things over time / decorating / gadgets / carpets / clothes / kids bikes as they grow / etc; things like school trips or a residential or special clothing or other one off payments to do with hobby; then you are looking at a different scenario.

growlingbear · 08/07/2019 22:34

It's not a lot. If it was £100 money just to have fun with it would be. But you need to save most of it for big expenses like Christmas, holidays, new school uniform and shoes, school trips and the inevitable breakdown of a fridge or washing machine or a dental emergency etc.
If I had that amount I'd save £75 pw and budget to spend about £25 on treats. It's not much but you can take DC to Saturday cinema or out for lunch or have a friend over for wine and pizzas. If you save most of it then you never need to feel anxious if the kids sprout three shoe sizes in one term (happened to DS 1) or the bath springs a leak.

formerbabe · 08/07/2019 22:37

Doable but actually quite tight. It's amazing how things add up.

tulips1234 · 08/07/2019 22:40

I have about £300 a month and it is tight. My only tip is to really keep a track of your finances, use a budget calculator to work out what is what and think before you buy anything. To be honest I find it hard, I ensure Dd has everything but ive not had a haircut in ages and live in about 4 outfits.

Digitalash · 08/07/2019 22:41

These threads baffle me. I have £180 a week after bills but before food and petrol, I live rurally so have to drive a lot. I save £30 a week for christmas and emergencies and we always have nice food in the fridge and clothes on our back we go fir days out atleast once but usually twice a week. Would more money be nice? Wouldn't it always. Do I have to live like a pauper? Absolutely not.

netflixlove · 08/07/2019 22:41

That's plenty, don't be ridiculous! You've got guaranteed food, petrol & hobbies covered as well as bills. What more do you need regularly? Just save the £100 for any unseen/extra expenses like broken appliances/haircuts/birthday etc.

I live off £35 pw (not including rent & bills which my partner pays) and I buy my own food each week with that £35.

alltoomuchrightnow · 08/07/2019 22:45

tons, far more than I have as childless

TwistyTop · 08/07/2019 22:48

This is his long is a piece of string. We don't know what sort of lifestyle you lead, if you have savings, emergency fund, are you a homeowner, do you use much public transport or have a car that needs maintaining, do you or your kids have any special needs etc.

Only you know if £100 a week is enough.

Paraballa · 08/07/2019 22:49

It's double what I have and mine has to pay for kids hobbies too. So I'd say it's plenty.

FluffyTabbycat · 08/07/2019 22:49

Thanks for your replies guys
So I have that 100 pound left over after saving towards 15 pound a week for xmas, and 5 pound a week for holidays. I take my kids away to butlins for a week once a year in October costs about 300 all inclusive for all 3 of us, so all we need to take is literally penny's for the arcades. They love it.
And I pay that off through the year at a amount you don't even realise is going out
I'm really lucky-My house is council, so any repairs that pop up they tend to deal with...
Car repairs... TOUCH WOOD I haven't needed since I got this car, ( three years ago)
Servicing N mot I've just been dealing with when needed

StumpyinSomerset · 08/07/2019 22:50

I'd love to have that amount spare each week.

BeanBag7 · 08/07/2019 22:51

It sounds reasonable but not a large amount. As PPs said it sounds like a lot for "treats" but if you also need to buy clothes and shoes for you/kids out of it, pay for school trips and uniform, haircuts etc.
Those aren't treats they are necessities and could take up a big chunk of the £100
