£400 is a lot for me - I would save half. That would give you over £2k per year - you could then pay car insurance/house insurance etc in one lump sum, saving in the total amount and put aside the previous monthly amount so you have even more savings plus a buffer. It would also mean if the car fell apart you could just get a new one without stressing.

When I first became a single parent I tightened my belt on “luxuries” and saved £50 every week in a separate savings account. Once I had a decent amount (around £2500) saved for contingencies, I was then able to think about things like holidays, clothes, and treats.

No

£100 is a lot

Nautiloid · 09/07/2019 11:57

It's more than I have at the moment and about what I've had for the last three years until recently. It was absolutely fine for the last three years, I'm struggling now with £35 a week left over and am trying to earn more wherever I can.

tashakg89 · 09/07/2019 11:58

I budget 100 like you, I'm glad people think it's a decent amount as I'm always worrying it's not. My 100 is for weekends doing stuff with kids but sometimes the kids haircuts will be included in this or his monthly football which is 25 pound depending on what we get payed that month. We do tend to run out every month

On top of this I should theoretically have 4-600 left for savings but I'm in a vicious circle with an Argos card :(

@tashakg89 There are plenty of organisations out there that can help with debt. CAB can be a good place to start. I’ve also heard good things about Christians against poverty (despite the name they help people of all faiths and none). Flowers

My only comment would be that you don’t need to ‘save for your daughter’s future’ (I mean, you can, but don’t tie it all up like that) but save for a rainy day.

purplelass · 09/07/2019 12:18

Sounds a lot to me, I also don't understand what you're spending it on if everything has been accounted for?

Any money I have 'spare' goes into savings in addition to my regular plan so it doesn't get squandered on stuff I don't need. It's not normally that much though, maybe £50 a month?

transformandriseup · 09/07/2019 12:41

It’s not a massive amount as you would need to set some aside for car tax/mot/repairs/haircuts/school uniform, but it’s definitely doable for just one adult in the house.

tisonlymeagain · 09/07/2019 12:44

£400 per month after everything seems perfectly okay to me!
