So basically after ALL bills including food, petrol, daughter's hobby, I have one hundred pound to live off... Per week... Single mother off two, one 8 year old and a baby.
What do u guys think.

OP posts:
quietcontentment · 09/07/2019 07:47

Tomatosalt - It sounds a bit grim to me. Are you doing any kind of further training or study to improve your earning capacity?

Your kidding right? Op may not t be rolling in the money but IT IS enough, yes it would be nice to have more but not everyone has nor is in the opportunity to earn big bucks. Or if your like me, I have similar to the OP, could earn more but I'm grateful for the smaller things in life that money cant buy, why? Like I said I could earn more but it just doesnt mean anything its just stuff.
Forest Gump - there is only so much money a person NEEDS the rest is for showing off.

quietcontentment · 09/07/2019 07:49

Sorry, read that back, probably could have explained it better and avoided typos!

ShatnersWig · 09/07/2019 07:58

After all my bills, food, petrol, pension, I probably have around the same amount per week left as you do and I do perfectly well on it (although I don't have kids). But I don't spend £720 (which is £15 per week) on Xmas, more like £400. That seems a lot to spend on Xmas personally and if I was concerned that £100 per week was a tight budget, I'd scale back Xmas a bit.

Youmadorwhat · 09/07/2019 08:14

OP I think it is enough...for now! You say you have no savings so that needs to be prioritized. You say your DM does the childcare but again you need savings Incase she decides she has had enough or gets ill etc. and the car will need work eventually it won’t last forever.

ToastyFingers · 09/07/2019 08:19

Sounds like plenty.
After all bills here dh and I have about 150 each a month for extra spends. It seems to do us just fine but part of our outgoings includes paying off debts so we can divert money from that for a month or two to cope with birthdays/xmas/summer holidays.

ToastyFingers · 09/07/2019 08:19

And that's for two adults and two kids 3 and 5.

missmouse101 · 09/07/2019 08:23

A hundred poundS is absolutely loads.

happyhillock · 09/07/2019 08:26

All your bill's are covered, you have £100 a week to live on, that's more than enough, some people would say your lucky

wendz86 · 09/07/2019 08:36

That’s about what I have . Also a single mum off too . It can be hard but I know we are much better off than some people .

EmeraldShamrock · 09/07/2019 09:27

It depends, there isn't much left over for savings or a treat but it is doable, lots of people would find it easy.
I usually think I'll have a certain amount after bills but things always crop up, summer winter wardrobe of clothes, new shoes, DC invites to expensive days out, there is always something put forward till the next week.
I should have a decent amount left over each week but I never do.

PavlovaFaith · 09/07/2019 09:43

No that would frighten me a bit. Are you saving any money? It would be okay if you had a pot.

PavlovaFaith · 09/07/2019 09:44

Sorry I see your post about not having savings.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 09/07/2019 09:57

So after everything has been paid for you have £100 a week to play with.
Yes. It's loads!

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/07/2019 09:59

It’s realy not loads everything hasn’t been paid for .

PenelopeFlintstone · 09/07/2019 10:08

Gardai Is it not pounds (not ‘pound’)? Have I got that wrong? Disclaimer - I’m pedantic.
Gardai, would you say
"She weighs ten stone" or "She weighs 10 stones"?
"She's five foot two", or "She's five feet two"?

From Wiktionary:
Pound or Pounds?
The general plural of "pound" has usually been "pounds" (at least since Chaucer), but the continuing use of the Old English genitive or neuter "pound" as the plural after numerals (for both currency and weight) is common in some regions. It can be considered correct, or colloquial, depending on region.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/07/2019 10:20

I think 15 is a good amount towards Christmas, it may be over £800. I do the same each week in euro, by the time Christmas arrives 800 really isn't much, food, family gifts, Santa gifts, new clothes and all the bills that pile in January.
Even reduce it to £10 and save £5 separately for a rainy.
You've got this. Wink
To add OP, ignore the bully jumping on your thread, it is the first time I saw it so soon to a nice poster, bad form.
Feck it I have issues with dyslexia and DCD, it makes you try harder and be stronger.

RightOnTheEdge · 09/07/2019 10:23

It always amazes me the life other people on here must have.
If I had £100 a week spare after food and bills were paid for I'd feel rich!
I'm also a single mum of two and that's about how much I have before food and gas, electric etc.
Yet some people are saying it's not a lot or it would scare them.
Mumsnet makes me feel really poor sometimes.

BertieBotts · 09/07/2019 10:26

Yup. Right there with you, OnTheEdge! And I know objectively we are not poor, have a good income etc.

Pinktinker · 09/07/2019 10:30

Sounds like a reasonable amount to me after every single outgoing. It’s enough to cover school related items, clothing and the odd trip out I’d say.

Deemail · 09/07/2019 10:30

If you don't have savings what are you currently spending the £100 on every week? I wonder are you underestimating how much you actually need each to live on and that's where the £100 is going?

Sunnysidegold · 09/07/2019 10:32

I think it sounds like a healthy amount to have. I would maybe consider actively saving some of that. Even a tenner a week is 500 quid a year. 800 pounds saved for Christmas is a great amount - presents, food , clothes and parties really add up. It's nice not to have to worry about affording Christmas as some do. As old money saving expert says, Christmas is the same date every year so you can plan for and save for it

TheRedBarrows · 09/07/2019 10:33

Lots of the posts saying it is tight are highlighting the difference between poverty and precariousness.

I would find £100 a week ‘disposable ‘ comfortable and not poor. But if I had no rainy day fund I would feel precarious. One new gearbox / period on sick pay / new shoes or school trip away from debt.

Swimming along nicely on £100 pw but swimming against the tide once you have to incur debt.

NoSauce · 09/07/2019 10:34

What does the £100 a week go on OP?

CruellaFeinberg · 09/07/2019 10:35

@FluffyTabbycat I think it depends in context.

Eg if you are on benefits then that's amazing

If you are asking because you're trying to tell your ex that 'it's all you have left and need to save for emergencies' then it sounds like a lot

Personally I think it sounds like a lot after bills

Can you give any more context

HypatiaCade · 09/07/2019 10:45

I think £100 is great, however you need to really prioritise getting some savings behind you, for emergencies. So at last £40 of it should go into savings for a few months.
