Do you all think that 100 pound is enough

FluffyTabbycat · 08/07/2019 22:17

So basically after ALL bills including food, petrol, daughter's hobby, I have one hundred pound to live off... Per week... Single mother off two, one 8 year old and a baby.
What do u guys think.

OP posts:

It sounds a bit grim to me. Are you doing any kind of further training or study to improve your earning capacity?

GrabbyGertie · 08/07/2019 23:18

Saving £15 a week for Xmas seems an awful lot considering how much you have spare a week. It's nearly £800. Are you buying for lots of people? What about just getting presents for your kids then you could have more during the week.

GrabbyGertie · 08/07/2019 23:19

Sorry I cross posted. If you have no savings then I think it's irresponsible to spend £800 on Xmas.

Pythonesque · 08/07/2019 23:19

It sounds like you are budgeting "well" but perhaps also quite severely. I'd aim to be saving a fair chunk of that £100 / week as general savings, that you can use for occasional and/or unexpected expenses. As that buffer increases you will then have more leeway for treats and the like.

likeafishneedsabike · 08/07/2019 23:19

Oh God another ridiculous post. It’s clearly the witching hour on MN.

MotherofaCat · 08/07/2019 23:20

Gardai
Perhaps you should find a hobby rather than being a snooty cow online.
OP it sounds as though you have an excellent budget in place and are managing well on what you have. If it is feeling a bit tight speak to a citizens advice advisor who could help tweak your budget or investigate any support you may be entitled to.

likeafishneedsabike · 08/07/2019 23:21

That was for the PP saying it’s ‘grim’ to only have £100 spending money per week Hmm

Hmm

Wow.

BackforGood · 08/07/2019 23:27

I've reported BlackSax, as I presume others will have done by now.

I was wondering why you are putting £15 a week away for Christmas though - seems a huge amount to be spending on Christmas, if you are budgeting carefully and so sensibly throughout the year?

Ravingstarfish · 08/07/2019 23:28

Of course £100 is a lot when everything else is covered

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 08/07/2019 23:35

£800 sounds like a lot, bit of it covers the Christmas period, food, things to do while DC are off all presents, cards, gift wrap, NYE etc I think it's pretty cheap, and of OP can afford to do it great. I would be saving at least £100 a month contingency though, unexpected costs, car repairs, tyres, brakes etc, that more expensive than usual school trip and so on. The more of a cushion you build maybe you could put a little something extra in the holiday fund, go somewhere different and take your mum with you to say thank you for her help with childcare.

Wow, I can't believe how mean people are! She's asking for an opinion on her financial situation not her spelling?

£100 would be a real struggle for me as left over money - especially for holidays, 3 kids and car etc. I don't think it sounds very much when you need to save :(

Yessers · 08/07/2019 23:52

I think it is a good amount. I would as others have already said put some aside for car maintenance. This still leaves enough for school trips and uniform, clothes, days out etc. I would try not to spend it all for the first few months so I could build a bit of a buffer. I would feel more comfortable with something to fall back on in the event of an unexpected expense.

HiJuice · 09/07/2019 00:03

You should save it really - you need 3 months salary saved in an easy access account, plus a pension. If you don't have those, you aren't financially secure and the slightest hiccup could get you into debt just to pay the bills. If you have 100 left after savings and pension and all essential outgoings, then you can relax and enjoy.
(If you have a cat you should also think about separate savings for unexpected vet bills).

RoseMartha · 09/07/2019 00:04

I think it is a reasonable amount. Atm I am covering my bills with no
Money for food so you are doing good. (Fortunately We currently have food in cupboard and freezer).

notangelinajolie · 09/07/2019 00:43

£100 is good short term for everyday stuff. But I think you would come unstuck for the big item stuff - what would you do when your washing machine dies or your car fails it's mot and needs a shed load of work doing on it or you get toothache and need a root canal treatment? You would need to be putting money away for emergencies like that so I think £200 a week is more like the figure you should be looking at.

Rachelover40 · 09/07/2019 01:13

I think you can manage but won't have anything left for extras, at least not at the moment. Things might change in the future, there have always been plenty of hard up people who eventually become better off for various reasons and I hope that is the case for you.

I don’t really understand what you’re asking for here. You’ve paid everything you need to and are saving for anticipated events and still have £400 per month left over and you’re asking us if it’s enough - enough for what?

NauseousMum · 09/07/2019 07:11

Spunds like you budget well. Just so long as you treat yourself every now and then.

I would consider @Al2O3 advice on wills and life insurance. If for nothing else, so your kids have guardianship. If their dad is deceased, or unlikely to step up, the kids would be put in foster care for several weeks without a guardian specified.

Lifeover · 09/07/2019 07:16

Well I think a couple of posters on here could use some of their money to get help with their issues,

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 09/07/2019 07:25

I read the post thinking, yes, £100 a week is enough for hobbies, food, travel... then realised this was after those! After those I have £0. I have no idea what you need it to be enough for!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 09/07/2019 07:29

I’d be working more and saving more. Having no savings when you have children is so risky, I don’t understand why you would prioritise a holiday and Christmas over that. Likewise only working part time when you have no back up salary, savings and children to provide for.

TuesdayAfter · 09/07/2019 07:35

@SkintAsASkintThing Black was very rude but there's no need to pile in and berate their parenting, that's a different level of mean.

Vanderlylecrybabygeek · 09/07/2019 07:44

Ignore blacksax. There’s nothing wrong with your English skills OP
