My mother insists I was terrified of the Chef from Sesame Street as a toddler, I would howl whenever he appeared on screen.

I was also petrified by the 2ft Bugs Bunny my brother bought me.

A few years later, it was the Gorgs from Fraggle Rock. I seem to have got over that fear though, my fella resembles a blond one slightly.

Was anybody else round here equally odd?

The lady on the front of Sunmaid raisins. Still am TBF. Creepy fucking bitch what's in that basket.

Madge2012 · 07/07/2019 21:09

The Moomins, and in particular a character who visited them every so often, called The Groke. Big black shapeless thing with a fixed grin. Still scares the shit out of me even now!

Claredogmum · 07/07/2019 21:10

Day of the Triffids. Terrifying.

cheesychipsandbighips · 07/07/2019 21:10

There was a bbc adaptation of the lion, the witch and the wardrobe knocking about when I was younger. Really freakish animals (men in suits) but they terrified me especially the wolf. Please tell me someone else has seen this!

spaniorita · 07/07/2019 21:13

Everything! I was a difficult child.

Grotbags the witch
Any loud and / or unexpected sound and therefore;
Dogs
Balloons
Roadworks
Thunder
Fireworks

The noise the electricity meter used to make in the hallway. It had a disk in it that used to whir around but I convinced myself it was a wolf breathing in the cupboard under the stairs

The Diddy men! www.memorabletv.com/features/classic-tv-revisited-ken-dodd-diddy-men/
and the sound of the flood warning siren from the Thames (before the barrier) i used to always have a bag packed under my bed, in case we had to leave!

Mokepon · 07/07/2019 21:14

@BasilFaulty that made me laugh!!
Yes @cheesychipsandbighips but I loved itl

PippiDeLena · 07/07/2019 21:15

Spontaneous human combustion.

Every night when I got into bed (in my staticky nylon(?) nightie, so actually in quite a lot of danger) I would be close to tears and silently pray to Mother Mary to spare me so I didn't ignite overnight, leaving only a foot for my family to find.

Also acid rain. I thought it was rain that would instantly sizzle your skin away when it fell on you so I was terrified every time it rained.

StCharlotte · 07/07/2019 21:17

The Long Man of Wilmington. We lived about 50 miles away and I thought he could probably make it to my house in about a dozen steps and "get" me. Still not keen.

Greggers2017 · 07/07/2019 21:18

I was absolutely terrified of Mr Blobby and Oscar the grouch from Sesame Street 😂😂😂

Tinysarah1985 · 07/07/2019 21:19

I was convinced that there were sharks behind the grill at the deep end of the swimming pool where the wave machine was (jaws was one of my favourite films!).
Also scared of one of the characters from Playdays- dash who was there on the dot stop. He looked like the thick condenser hose from the tumble dryer

SmellbowSmellbow123 · 07/07/2019 21:21

@DoYouNeedAWee

When I was a preteen I was terrified of spontaneous human combustion so slept with a fire extinguisher next to my bed

Did you watch Thats Life?! That show had this story on it and half the stuff they aired scared me as a kid!

MindyStClair · 07/07/2019 21:22

cheesychipsandbighips I adored that adaptation but it seriously scared me too. There was one particular bit where the kids were reading a letter from a baddie and his face appeared in the letter, laughing with fire all around him, and I was terrified!

EleanorOalike · 07/07/2019 21:29

Mushrooms. I went hysterical at the sight of them.

wanderings · 07/07/2019 21:30

@cheesychipsandbighips Oh yes, I remember the BBC Chronicles of Narnia, where most of the animals were clearly humans in suits. The scene where Maugrim the wolf breaks into the Beavers' house and starts ransacking it was terrifying, as was the moment when Peter fights him. And of course Barbara Kellerman as the White Witch, especially when Edmund meets her in her castle. (There's a moment when the wolf changes from being a human in a suit to an actual dog!)

Also in the Silver Chair there was Glimfeather the owl, who was a bit freaky.

I was scared of things which glowed in the dark, especially alarm clocks. I'd have been scared of Gro-clocks if they had been around.

@SmellbowSmellbow123 I remember that weird music on Blockbusters, if the contestant missed the Gold Run. And speaking of quiz shows, I was a bit scared of William G Stewart, when my grandmother watched Fifteen to One: he looked and sounded like a very strict teacher.

Who or whatever lurked under the bed.
As an adult I always have drawers under the beds.

Yutes · 07/07/2019 21:31

At gym at school the gymnastics horse always scared me. I thought there was a troll or something inside

Dumpyandabdabs · 07/07/2019 21:32

Grotbags!! She terrified me.

And the bit on superman 3 where the woman gets trapped in the machine that turns her into a robot.

I have issues haha

Pinocchio terrified me.

I also could never sleep with my bedroom windows open as thought the swans from the lake opposite would fly in and attack me!!

littlepeaegg · 07/07/2019 21:36

Also the 'War of the Worlds' record!! So scary!!

Scoobygang7 · 07/07/2019 21:37

Fireys in labyrinth urgh removable body parts. Favourite film but for years had to watch with my eyes half shut for that bit.

Theme tune to Count Duckula

Flushing the toilet in the night

False teeth had to get over that when I started working in care homes. Took a while though.

WellTidy · 07/07/2019 21:37

The Esso tiger

Bluebluered · 07/07/2019 21:38

I’m not sure, but I can vaguely remember a dressed up burger or something similar at wimpy’s. I was shit scared and climbed over chairs to get away. Similarly Father Christmas at nursery. I vaguely remember crying and running around the room avoiding him.

Incredible Hulk and his weird eyes scared the crap out of me as a child. My children laughed at it when I showed them 🙄.

barberousbarbara · 07/07/2019 21:40

I was terrified of ET. I remember Blue Peter doing a section about the release of ET and I had to spend the whole time behind the settee.
