My mother insists I was terrified of the Chef from Sesame Street as a toddler, I would howl whenever he appeared on screen.

I was also petrified by the 2ft Bugs Bunny my brother bought me.

A few years later, it was the Gorgs from Fraggle Rock. I seem to have got over that fear though, my fella resembles a blond one slightly.

Was anybody else round here equally odd?

@SmellbowSmellbow123 no I don't think I've ever watched that's life, it was actually a programme called brainiac with Richard Hammond, one episode they looked into spontaneous human combustion.

latenightcakes · 07/07/2019 21:42

TuesdayAfter, are you thinking of The Triffids? Plants that blinded people, terrifying and a series called The Tripods, scary sci fi series.

Bluebluered · 07/07/2019 21:42

There was one particular bit where the kids were reading a letter from a baddie and his face appeared in the letter, laughing with fire all around him, and I was terrified!

I remember this and being scared too! I put the BBC Narnia adaptation on for my kids a few months ago, and throughout I was told how bad and unrealistic the computer graphics were. They had tears in their eyes from laughing at Aslan flying🙄. Kids these days are little twits.

Bambamber · 07/07/2019 21:44

There was a particularly dark shadow in the corner of my bedroom just my door which had a vampire living in. I always had to run and get into bed so the vampire couldn't get me

HumphreyCobblers · 07/07/2019 21:44

I was absolutely terrified of the Witch in Chorlton and the Wheelies. It was the way she could just pop up where ever she wanted.

Both my dc were scared of the shapes in Mr Maker.

letsgomaths · 07/07/2019 21:44

Shoes could be scary things. I was told that if I didn't put them neatly together after taking them off, they might walk away without me; and if I wore them without socks, I might find my toes had disappeared. I freaked out a bit when at school, we were made to put them on bare feet (to walk from the classroom to the gym). But sandals without socks were OK because then I could see that my toes were still there!

Emptyspacex · 07/07/2019 21:47

This!!! The picture of whistlers mother in the Mr bean movie.

The wheelers from Return To Oz. That whole film was terrifying to be honest, and I think it was meant for children!

wanderings · 07/07/2019 21:52

@littlepeaegg I found the story of Pinocchio scary too: not the Disney version (I was older when I saw that), but a Ladybird book and cassette, which showed Pinocchio kicking Gepetto on the nose, being dragged off to prison, being hung from a tree and left to die, and the fairy laughing while his nose grows. My dad once warned me against putting my bare feet too close to the fire, because they might burn off, like Pinocchio's did.

Elllicam · 07/07/2019 21:53

Also the wheelers. My mum said I had nightmares for months about the wheelie men. There was another film as well that people were appalled at some characters eating white meat. I was freaked out by chicken for ages. I’m now a vegetarian.

Croprotationinthe14thcentury · 07/07/2019 21:55

In the never ending story when the white horse gets sucked up by the mud/quicksand. I was terrified of walking on mud incase it got me after that.
Also sharks in the swimming pool.
I used to have a nightmare that a shark lived in the wall next to my bed and would eat the bricks to get closer to me and the bricks would be all stuck in his/her shark teeth. I used to take my duvet and sllep on the floor just go get away from the wall shark! I watched jaws when I was 5/6 and it was obviously traumatic!

definitelyshouldknowbetter · 07/07/2019 21:55

The witch that lived on a tiny shelf in my bedroom and watched me all the night, at night I remember being convinced she was there watching me

PuzzledObserver · 07/07/2019 22:02

I was scared of the noise the toilet cistern made when it was refilling, because I thought it sounded like the cybermen. Our loo was at the end of the corridor, so I used to sit on the loo with the door open, so that I could flush and run. My parents’ bedroom was opposite - they loved that!

latenightcakes · 07/07/2019 22:02

Shoppingwithmother, yes The boy from space, freaked me out, I think it was shown to us at school on a Friday afternoon as a treat, plus other weird Friday Film Specials, eek!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 07/07/2019 22:03

Return to oz was freaky

I was scared of ladybirds, still don’t like them

avocadosrus · 07/07/2019 22:04

The Nolan's, absolutely terrified of them used to hide behind the sofa when they came on the tv!

cheesychipsandbighips · 07/07/2019 22:06

Return to oz with the changeable heads of the queen - wtf!!!

PrincessC0nsuela · 07/07/2019 22:07

Apparently I used to hide behind the sofa because i was terrified of Button Moon... I also absolutely hated the Moomins...

babyno5 · 07/07/2019 22:07

Bats. My sister told me they'd get caught in my long hair (we lived in the country) oh and she told me cavemen lived under the bridge

SudowoodoVoodoo · 07/07/2019 22:12

The Childline phone number and "don't talk to strangers" adverts 😂 I could just about stand the one where the car pulls up to the kid in the obiquitous brown parka by the school railings, but Charlie and I went down to the park had me fleeing out of the room and hiding under my bed counting to a big number before I felt it might be safe to go back downstairs!
I think it was the implied unspoken terror that was hinted out. No one said what would happen if you accepted the sweets, got in the car or went to see the puppies.

I loved the Narnia series, I got it on DVD a couple of years ago Grin

jma43 · 07/07/2019 22:14

The butler that followed Lara Croft around on a tomb raider PlayStation game. However that was partly my brothers fault as he told me if the butler caught up to Lara, he'd kill her! I was absolutely terrified of the silent, slow, elderly butler Confused

freshdaisycuplet · 07/07/2019 22:16

The beast from beauty and the beast scared the living shit out of me.

EnigmaticIcelandShopper · 07/07/2019 22:16

I always thought we were going to get crushed in the carwash by that giant roller thingummyjig.

mumderland · 07/07/2019 22:16

E.T. Still scares me to this day

scrunchSE18 · 07/07/2019 22:16

Hairdressers terrified me (still not keen now) as I thought they came into my room at night to try and cut my hair. I was certain my hair got shorter during the night and used to try and sleep with my back against the wall for years. When recently talking about my ongoing fear with my mum she breezily said ‘oh yes that was me - I used to cut your hair whilst you were asleep’!
I am the result of this and many other great parenting decisions made in the 1970s.
