My mother insists I was terrified of the Chef from Sesame Street as a toddler, I would howl whenever he appeared on screen.

I was also petrified by the 2ft Bugs Bunny my brother bought me.

A few years later, it was the Gorgs from Fraggle Rock. I seem to have got over that fear though, my fella resembles a blond one slightly.

Was anybody else round here equally odd?

The ITV sports results teleprinter on a Saturday night. Used to drive my dad nuts cos I'd be wailing and crying while he was trying to check his pools coupon. And for anyone not as ancient as me, this is what it used to look like. images.app.goo.gl/svwA2aUjzpxGJzUK9

I used to be frightened that monsters would grab my feet in the night unless I tucked the bottom of the duvet round them.

I never lost the habit and still tuck the duvet round my feet aged 37. Blush

twistyturnycurlywhirly · 07/07/2019 20:21

Wizbit 😱

EnormousDormouse · 07/07/2019 20:23

There was some kind of stick creature in Rupert I think - poss called 'Raggetty' that apparently used to make me shriek hysterically

Bones and skeletons.

Dr Who (especially the one with the moving standing stones; and the one that had a ray gun that accelerated time so that it turned an egg into a chicken and then INTO BONES (see previous fear- no sleep for me that night))

Death by nuclear bomb.

missmartini · 07/07/2019 20:23

Crocodile dentist...

I thought that thing was coming to chew my hand off.

leosayershair · 07/07/2019 20:23

Timeforsinging & exWife - Rod Hull & Emu for me too, just awful Shock

Escalators - thought I would get my foot caught in the funny teeth when you got off at the top or bottom and get dragged under.

Walking over bridges, fine driving over, but walking felt like I could either get blown over the side or other way into the road Still don't like walking over them now.

Rachelover40 · 07/07/2019 20:28

A fairy who lived in the light bulb, within the lampshade, in my bedroom.
Big scales in Woolworths; had a dream about them once, there was one on our landing and a grinning dragon was guarding it.
Martians on the allotments.
Fall out from nuclear war and me being the only person left on earth, riding my little bike around the park.
My bed, with me in it, sinking through the floor and the floor closing over it.

Jsmith99 · 07/07/2019 20:29

Moths. I still don’t like them.

DeadDoorpost · 07/07/2019 20:29

The Lollypop lady at school. No reason as to why as she always chatted to my mum, but I would hide behind my mum

Binting · 07/07/2019 20:30

@Lizzielockett, me too with the child catcher!

Also scared of flushing toilets. I once poo’d my pants at a neighbours house because I was too scared to use the toilet Blush

introv3rt · 07/07/2019 20:30

I used to think there were sharks in public swimming pools/swimming baths

ExtraFox19 · 07/07/2019 20:31

The girl with the hair and and the toy clown who sat at the backboard after the children’s tv stopped airing in the 80s.

emwithme · 07/07/2019 20:32

The Moomins.

thisisgettingridiculous · 07/07/2019 20:35

I was and still am a scaredy cat. As a young child I was terrified of this cartoon en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Telebugs which gave me nightmares for some reason!!! Also terrified of Jaws and as an older child, Pennywise the clown. We had a front porch at the bottom of the stairs and I would be convinced pennywise was standing in the porch as I walked up the stairs. Used to be in the grip of a full scale panic attack by the time I reached the top.

bookworm14 · 07/07/2019 20:35

I’ve thought of another one - shop window dummies. I remember going to a department store with my mum when I was quite small and the lift doors opening to reveal a huge box of naked, bald dummies (obviously on their way to being dressed and put in the windows. I nearly wet myself! It was one of those old fashioned lifts with a grille across the door, which added to the creepy atmosphere...

Yaflamingalah · 07/07/2019 20:47

Lions and the Incredible Hulk. Also I remember being absolutely terrified of the AIDS advert on TV and in magazines. I was only about 7 at the time and had no idea what this disease was but still being terrified of catching it.

Ronsters · 07/07/2019 20:48

Yes to Raggetty, in Rupert Bear. He was a stick like creature, sort of made of twigs. Harmless but a bit creepy to look at.
I was scared by mechanical objects, like cranes.

MindyStClair · 07/07/2019 20:53

I don’t know how irrational this was because I have a feeling it was creepy for a comedy show.... but the Phantom Raspberry Blower from The Two Ronnies. I’d lie awake at night worrying about it.

And as much as I loved He-Man, I had to hide behind the sofa when he put his sword in the air and ‘turned’

leosayershair · 07/07/2019 20:57

Oh god yes Mindy The Phantom Raspberry Blower was terrifying. I was scared to be alone anywhere in case he crept up behind me!

Mokepon · 07/07/2019 21:00

Also Dr. Who but just the music.

My mum once played an April fool with soap that turned your hands black, I screamed the place down, was petrified.

The opening to Tales of the Unexpected with the woman dancing in the flames.

The cover of the book Carrie, even writing that still gives me the chills. My delightful brother used to chase me round the house with it. Love SK, never been able.to read that one. Dh once tried to make me watch the movie. He did not succeed.

SmellbowSmellbow123 · 07/07/2019 21:00

TV gameshow Blockbusters. They had the Gold Run (I think it was called?) at the end. If the contestant failed they played a weird tune. I remember hating it but anticipating it and one day I screamed my head off at the tip of the stairs when I heard it but didn’t want too!!

cornstarch · 07/07/2019 21:01

Lizzie Dripping and the witch

Zofloramummy · 07/07/2019 21:04

The witch that lived in the toilet cistern Grin. I fell down the loo as a child and after that I used to flush and run.

The daleks absolutely petrified me. One year my Nan bought me a toy one for Xmas to ‘get me over it’ I screamed the place down.

The LP of War of the Worlds with the oohlaas (the noise the Martians made) as I called them.

I had a terrifying childhood 😆

Giggorata · 07/07/2019 21:05

The hoover when preschool age and the plughole in the bath, which used to make the most godawful noise.
Spiders, of course, to this day.
Electricity substations, which hummed sinisterly.
Daleks.

thenightsky · 07/07/2019 21:06

The big trunk that sat on top of the wardrobe at the end of my bed. I was terrified it was going to fall on me in the night.
