My mother insists I was terrified of the Chef from Sesame Street as a toddler, I would howl whenever he appeared on screen.

I was also petrified by the 2ft Bugs Bunny my brother bought me.

A few years later, it was the Gorgs from Fraggle Rock. I seem to have got over that fear though, my fella resembles a blond one slightly.

Was anybody else round here equally odd?

I was terrified of falling down the plughole as a child and would refuse to shower because I'd have had to stand over it.

I was afraid of snakes coming out from under my bed and tickling my underarms Confused so would sleep with my elbow tucked under my head to kind of hide my underarm. The thing is, I got used to sleeping like that so now I can't sleep any other way and it's causing all sorts of problems with my shoulder!

I was terrified of the man in 'the Fox and the hound' Disney film. Used to be hysterical when the film was on.

Rod Hull and Emu Blush

Also a fear of trains, getting stuck in or falling out of train doors to be specific, for a few years in primary school after watching a video in school about train safety. Luckily my mum humoured me and we got the bus everywhere!

exWifebeginsat40 · 07/07/2019 20:03

werewolves, having to pull the curtains upstairs when it was already dark, and Rod Hull.

Yes to filters in swimming pools, in my head they posed quite a few potential dangers..... trapped hair, limbs & obviously a shark getting through.... Absolutely hate them even now!

Also hated the film Charlie & the Chocolate Factory - I seem to remember a child getting sucked into the chocolate making machine which made me feel queasy & I've avoided it ever since!

exWifebeginsat40 · 07/07/2019 20:05

@Timeforsinging81

The Harpies from Jason and the Argonauts. 1963 film.

We went to an outdoor living history museum a while ago and I pointed out one of the old fashioned brick shit houses in the yard of a house. It was separated into two: a coal section on one side and the outdoor toilet on the other. There were some dummy feet showing under the toilet door to show that someone was on there and surrounding them was a load of coal that had fallen from the bunker. Anyway, my dc2 saw that and then absolutely refused to go to the toilet for the rest of the morning until I forced them because I could see they were bursting. It turned out they thought that if you go to an old-fashioned toilet you'd turn to coal like that man we saw earlier!

The Daleks.

The draughts. DM would always close the window before I went to sleep “to stop the draughts getting in”. For years I was convinced they were little monsters floating around intent on attacking children in their sleep.

Dodgems at the fair. More specifically when the pole touched the mesh in the ceiling and created sparks.

ilovecheese1 · 07/07/2019 20:09

The head in art attack. I used to hide behind a pillow when he came on!

Being in the car at night especially in the rain, silent crying scared as I didn’t want to tell my mum

letsgomaths · 07/07/2019 20:10

Seeing a toilet with the seat up: it looked like a monster with a wide open mouth; the adults would forget that it was right at my eye level, and that to lower it, I would have to reach as high as I could. If I wasn't careful, it would fall with a great bang.

There was a time when I played pin the tail, aged 6, and my friend's older teen sister was in charge. I was scared of her, because she looked grown up, but everyone called her a "girl". (Childish logic!) When it was my turn, she looked me in the eye, advanced on me with the scarf stretched out between her hands, and said in what I thought was an evil voice "you're next!". Shock I ran out of the room. However, by switching on kind and reassuring tones, she persuaded me to have my go. I found it oddly calming when she covered my eyes.

Mr Tickle. I thought his arms were chasing me up the stairs or coming out of the toilet
