Was asked by a relative
Person : what you up to tonight ? Just chilling?

Seriously do people think babies are easy . What am I gonna be doing other than feeding changing bathing , keeping baby alive and to bed. Baby is 3 months old.

Got me thinking are other people out there with young babies still having evenings and doing stuff , maybe Iv got it wrong 🤷‍♀️

At 3 months my dd would go to bed between 7-8 so wehad the rest of our evening in front of the tv. I would say we were 'chilling'

We would go out for dinner maybe once a week somewhere cheap all 3 of us.

Our lives didn't really change when baby was3 months old, we just took her with us wherever.

InsertFunnyUsername · 06/07/2019 16:11

Re restaurants I just take mine in the pram - just need to get a table with space to park it. If he fusses we play pass the baby.

Yes same here. Its common round where i live to see babies out in the evening. I wouldn't choose to do it every week, but i see no reason not to once in a while Smile

schoolsoutforever · 06/07/2019 16:12

No chilling with a small baby in the evening. When mine were very small I went to bed at 7.30 so I had a few hours before being awake most of the night. Not exactly chilling, no.

Coffeekisses · 06/07/2019 16:13

Ds1 I did not chill. I fed and bathed and rocked and mothered and stressed.
DS2 I believed firmly in “4th trimester” so strapped him to me, learned to breastfeed on the go, and generally did everything I normally did —mainly watching Tek Me Out and eating readymeaps—

GordonBrockman · 06/07/2019 16:17

That’s25c, I don’t think there is an obsession with getting them to sleep early? But there are an awful lot of babies who are very unsettled in the evening and who require a lot of soothing and settling, it’s not just a case of having a happy baby gurgling away next to you while you watch tv and then falling peacefully asleep once they’re ready

Celebelly · 06/07/2019 16:21

We did a lot of board games and DVDs in those early weeks as DD was usually either feeding or asleep. She's 4.5 months now and goes to bed at 7 every night so I can actually plan to do stuff, but we have been extremely lucky to get both a good sleeper and a very placid and even tempered baby. If you have a high needs baby then I can imagine there isn't much in the way of chilling!

Okyah · 06/07/2019 16:23

Depends on the baby. If you are fortunate to have a ‘sleeper’ it’s quite possible to have a chilled evening. If you end up with one like latest DGD, you’d be lucky to get 30 mins to make/eat a meal before she needs something/someone again.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 06/07/2019 16:24

I went to bed at 7.30 so I had a few hours before being awake most of the night

oh god I'd completely forgotten that. my bed time was 7:30-8:00, just so I could actually manage all the night waking and still function

god I hated having small babies. I think I can comprehensively say that I didn't 'chill' until they both reached about 3!

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 06/07/2019 16:25

Easier to 'chill' when theyre 4months old then when theyre 3years old. 😂🙄

SoyDora · 06/07/2019 16:26

I have a 5 year old, a 4 year old and a 6 month old and I spend my evenings chilling! They’re all in bed at 7.

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 06/07/2019 16:26

I don’t think there is an obsession with getting them to sleep early?

oh there is! How many times do you hear "I deserve to have my evening" when people have children? Kids must have diner at 5pm or they are starving, they must sleep early even on beautiful summer evening. Then parents complain that they get up at dawn!
It starts from babies.

SoyDora · 06/07/2019 16:28

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 mine go to bed at 7 because that’s when they’re tired and ready for bed. Up at 7 (which is when they need to be up to get ready for school/nursery etc).

Chocolateychocolate · 06/07/2019 16:28

Chillax. I chill with my young baby of an eve.

userabcname · 06/07/2019 16:28

yanbu - DS is way easier to chill with at 2yo than he was at 4mo - for one thing he now actually sleeps!!! At that age we were feeding every 2hours 24/7 with nappy changes, winding etc in between. It was quite relentless. I imagine things are easier if you have a sleeper though.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/07/2019 16:29

A colleague said 'maternity leave isn't a holiday you know' and then when I asked her what she was doing later: 'seeing a friend' lol.

saraclara · 06/07/2019 16:29

How did this comment merit an OP? Pretty much all we did when our babies were tiny was chill. We didn't really go out much, so we were generally sitting in front of the TV etc.

Chill doesn't have to mean entirely relaxed and in a blissed out state! Just not doing anything particular at home. Interspersed with feeding and changing maybe, but otherwise just hanging out at home.

ChristmasArmadillo · 06/07/2019 16:32

The best chill home evenings I ever had were when my first baby was < one year. We went out with her plenty also but lying on the couch cuddled up with a baby watching Netflix is good times.

Jinglejanglefish · 06/07/2019 16:34

I find with a baby there's little else to do in the evenings except for put them to bed and then chill. DP and I drink wine and watch the sopranos

PatriciaHolm · 06/07/2019 16:35

We went out to dinner when DD was 4 days old..,.

Local relaxed pizzeria, she snoozed in her pram.

Teateaandmoretea · 06/07/2019 16:35

I'm confused it's perfectly reasonable to have plans with a 4mo or prefer to stay in with baby. It isn't a weird question at all - ultimately most people with 4mo babies surely put them down to sleep in the evening and some even go out.

rwalker · 06/07/2019 16:36

Sounds just like small talk but TBH at that age feed and changed ours would "just chill" on playmate on floor .
Sound a bit dramaitc keeping baby alive is there an medical issues you didn't mention in your post.

Youngandfree · 06/07/2019 16:37

Well after 6 weeks I went back to my weekly yoga class, and sometimes I went for an evening swim. Or we would have couple friends over for a games night, the girls would come around for a cuppa and a chat. But yes we chilled out mostly. But our lives didn’t stop. Confused

Teateaandmoretea · 06/07/2019 16:37

And as for the poster who said not to take babies out in a prank in the evening because they prefer not to see children... erm everyone has to share the world and okay fair enough to be annoyed if the baby is screaming but otherwise the world doesn't revolve around you.
