To cancel the surgery tomorrow? I'm scared

I've had lots of dodgy symptoms for a while(over 10 years) and they are getting worse.
My gynaecologist thinks I have endometriosis.
I'm booked in for a diagnostic laparoscopy tomorrow.
I'm terrified and I feel sick already.
I don't want to have it incase I don't wake up.
I've had my pre op and they say I'm perfectly healthy to have it.
I'm having bowel and bladder symptoms and bleeding after sex.
My smear was normal and swabs etc
It's a day surgery so I can come home same day.
My gf says if it won't kill me don't have the lap.
What do I do ?

Nobody can tell you what to do. Can you live with your current symptoms and you say they are getting worse.
The hospital will be very used to nervous patients, and I think a lap is a light anaesthetic. Can you ring the day ward and speak to someone on there.

lmusic87 · 04/07/2019 10:58

I know you are scared, but please just try to get through this anxious time. I'm in a similar situation and i'm trying to think that it just needs to be done. xx

trytrytry · 04/07/2019 11:00

I want to have kids and I think this is affecting my body inside.
I constantly feel like I have a uti and it's just making me exhausted every day lately.
I need a nap every afternoon for two hours.
I have diarrhoea daily and feel sick daily.
I can live like this but it's not happy

seriously, you know you are being unreasonably alarmed. I am sure you know you really need this procedure to diagnose your problems.

Laparoscopy is keyhole surgery -That's going to be the safest you can get. It's a bit like flying though - a trepidation that there might be a problem, but intellectually you do know it will be alright.

Good luck for tomorrow. :)

DontCallMeShitley · 04/07/2019 11:07

If you cancel it you will still worry and be thinking you should have had it done. It will be hanging over you.

If you go ahead you will be on the way to getting some help.

Idontwanttotalk · 04/07/2019 11:07

It's a simple procedure with a light anaesthetic. If you are getting worse then have it done otherwise you'll never know what is wrong. Speak to the team now about your concerns.

Whatever you decide, hurry up. Cancel asap if you are going to as NHS may be able to offer your slot to someone who won't let them down.

Your gf is an idiot. My advice: have the OP and ditch the stupid, ignorant gf as they don't have your best interests at heart.

Almostfifty · 04/07/2019 11:08

You will wake up. You will have had a lovely sleep and they'll know what's wrong with you. Just let them know you're really nervous and they'll reassure you.

notapizzaeater · 04/07/2019 11:09

Honestly - just think of it as having a quick nap at the hospital. It should give you the answers you need.

babysharkah · 04/07/2019 11:12

That is the worst advice. I think I have ever heard from your gf.

Go, get it done. Find out what's going on.

Bambamber · 04/07/2019 11:12

As someone who has had laparoscopic treatment for endo that completely changed my life for the better, I say absolutely have it done.

If you don't have it done, what is the plan? Spending your whole life in pain wondering what could be wrong? A diagnostic lap is the only way to know for sure, and surgical removal is generally the best treatment if it is in fact endo.

Pushmepullyou · 04/07/2019 11:13

I had a laparoscopy for endo 20 years ago. It was brilliant, changed my life and i’ve never looked back. I have 2 DC who I probably wouldn’t have been able to have otherwise and though they are a pain in the bum they are amazing and my world

InglouriousBasterd · 04/07/2019 11:13

I’ve had two laps and honestly, they really aren’t bad. Very quick, tiny incisions that heal quickly. You’ll
Kick yourself if you don’t have this done - are they planning to laser any endometriosis found? It will make a massive difference to your life.

I was up and about within a couple of hours and back at the gym in a couple of weeks.

bodgeitandscarper · 04/07/2019 11:14

Have the lap and look on it as the start of solving your issues. They may be reluctant to offer medical help if you arent going to go through with any of the investigations.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/07/2019 11:15

Your girlfriend is advising you not to have the op? Terrible advice - please don't listen.

Have the op. Much better to find out what is wrong and treat it rather than stick your head in the sand because of fears over a very, very routine procedure. I had one over twenty years ago and am still very much live and kicking.

Nautiloid · 04/07/2019 11:16

I've had 3 surgeries and would have cancelled every single one if I'd had the choice. Every time I've been terrified, and every time the anaesthetists have been so incredibly wonderful and I've ended up wondering what i was worrying about.
Day surgery was the hardest for me because there's something unnatural about going for surgery when you're not in a hospital bed to me.
It's completely up to you. In your shoes I'd think about whether you'd still want to go for it if it was, say, three months away. I bet you would.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 04/07/2019 11:18

I'm sorry it is frightening you but please get it done. If something needs attention the sooner you get it seen to, the better.
As for what gf said - I'm betting this is on your mind from the moment you wake up to when you go to bed and lie awake panicking, so by simply not going tomorrow, that won't lift a weight from your mind.

IncrediblySadToo · 04/07/2019 11:18

🌷you can do it and you need to. Your symptoms are awful, you’re not happy and it will possibly stop you having children if you don’t get it sorted

I had my appendix out last year ’keyhole’. I went in as an emergency abdominal pain and a few hours later was in theatre at midnight all a bit rushed and scary but I’m glad I didn’t have time to think about it really and they weren’t giving me the option to say no!

You can do this & you need to 🌷

CatPunsFreakMeowt · 04/07/2019 11:18

Are they going to treat and endometriosis that they find during the operation? I think I’d be reluctant to have it done if it was purely diagnostic. There is the option to have any endometriosis addresses while they’re performing the lap, I’d opt for that to avoid extra procedures.

Ribenaberriesgowoo82 · 04/07/2019 11:24

Honestly, you will be fine. The surgeons do this day in and day out. GA is actually quite nice and my favourite bit. A lovely no effort snooze.

GabsAlot · 04/07/2019 11:42

Its just like a nice sleep andits day surgery it wont be heavy sedation-you'll be fine then you'll know whats wrong aswell

ginghamstarfish · 04/07/2019 11:45

It's a simple procedure, and hopefully they will find out more about how to help you. Be thankful you are not having major surgery and taking months to recover ...

Justaboy · 04/07/2019 11:55

Bin there and dun that!, well not quite that, a colonscopy or the 5 foot silver snake up the botty for bowel cancer and I was pardon the wording shiitting myself but all good afterwards:)

Please do be brave OP and go for it then you'll know if you have a problem or not, and knowlege is power!

Please trust me!

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 04/07/2019 11:55

Appreciate that you're scared, but you need to get a grip. It's a simple procedure, done by professionals, and will hopefully give you the answers you're looking for.

I want to have kids

Childbirth will be way worse than a laparoscopy.

Get your big girl pants on and do it. Your GF's advice was terrible, by the way.

LizB62A · 04/07/2019 11:55

My gf says if it won't kill me don't have the lap.
Is your GF medically trained?
If not, that's really unhelpful advice.
Doctors don't put patients through procedures for fun - it's a diagnostic procedure to try and find out what is causing your symptoms.

Surely you want to find out what is happening and get it sorted?

Kentishgal · 04/07/2019 12:06

I had a lap for endometriosis last year and it was totally the right decision - they found loads of tissue, a cyst and removed a fallopian tube. I fell pregnant on the second cycle after the op having tried for quite some time before that. I was only due to be in theatre for 45 mins and ended up being 2.5hrs - so it was a little more invasive but worth it in the long run.
