I've just taken my niece out for lunch. She's 16 and with the arrival of the weather she's been wearing a t-shirt and a mini skirt with her converse. Typical look for your typical teen but for just during lunch alone she was accosted by 2 different men who asked for her number. Both men clearly middle-aged and trying their luck. I admit she does look older than a teen but sheer audacity of these men hitting on a 16 year old girl really riled me.

The catcalls and comments I got as a teen pissed me off for sure but it was nothing compared to the sheer constant level of street harassment I got when I moved to France.

It took me a while to realise that these weren’t French men but North African.

You wouldn’t believe the amount of older, married men (loving fathers, grandfathers, husband etc) who would sleep with an 18 year old given half a chance. Too many women are just unaware of what the men in their own lives really, truly, deep down think. They are all around us.

Teach her to say "ewww. Jog on grandad". Disgusting old men. Yuck.

However be a tiny tiny bit careful. I don't think he looked middle aged (obv, I went for him ) but DH had a hair line that was in retreat at 19 plus facial hair, he looks basically the same at 32 as he did at 19. At 18 my sister had a boyfriend who was 23 and looked a good 5 years older

I pity the poor girl/woman who met and gave a older man oral sex in a nearby park. Doesn't sound a great encounter for her.....

I am going to try and empower my dds to not placate or simper and to see this clearly for what it is - “some men are nasty and get sick pleasure from leering at young girls darling” all rules of politeness are OFF as far as they are concerned whilst prioritising their own safety at all times. Dd1 at her suggestion has started some sort of martial art. Kick them in the balls

The thought of it happening to my girls makes me feel sick. They are still little but my eldest is tall so I suspect she’ll look older at a young age. All these lecherous bastards should just sod off.

Could you talk with her about how to respond? I can really get why she’d shyly claim to have a bf, but it would be great if she could look them in the eye and say a strong no.

I went through all this with dd, got her to make assertive responses and got her to martial arts classes, which luckily she loves and now does several times a week.
it’s great for both of us knowing she can defend herself, and it’s really amplified her ability to call out bullshit and give neutral truthful responses like “ you are older than my dad” .

It is vile though how many older men think they are in with a chance with young girls.

My daughter is 14 and gets beeped at by men in cars all the time, even in school uniform. Also comments on the street. She has taken to shouting "nonce" and "paedo" at them.

Why do you believe that's unfortunate? If you feel women being attracted to older men is unfortunate, why would you involve yourself and take advantage of a situation if its something you feel is wrong or unfortunate?

I mean unfortunately some women feel they have to sleep men to avoid being beaten or to pay their Bill's and keep a roof over their head? Do you have sex with those women too.
