or at least its odd as we dont call the men lions we call them england we should call the women England but also adding an ess to a noun an be considered sexist by many. it has just struck me as odd.

@Hithere12

You are posting music videos from FORTY YEARS AGO to prove “girls” isn’t sexist/patronising. 😂😂😂😂

I’m only 28 and would cringe if I was called a “girl” never mind being menopausal and called it.

'Here come the girls' was 2008 darling. 'Girls just wanna have fun' was 35 years ago. Neither one was forty years ago.

I can't BELIEVE you're 28. Would have put you at 17-19 y.o.

You sound very uptight. I know females in their 40s and 50s who have no issue with being called 'girl.'

'girls night out,' 'girls on tour' etc.. No idea why you have such a stick up your arse about it. You sound uptight and immature. That is why I would swear you're about 17.

And yeah SO I picked one song from 35 years back. (With GIRL in the title.) Still, there are plenty more recent ones. Suck on these my girl... Grin

2009...

2004

There are waaaaay more, but I actually need to go to bed as I have work in the morning. Don't want to be late and let the GIRLS in the office down.

Lighten up. And grow up eh? Smile

sweetpea777 · 03/07/2019 00:03

Who cares. They bottled it anyway Wink

I think I actually lost my faith that real feminism still exists as opposed to entitled idiocy from bored idiots searching for a platform.

OP you do realise ridiculous arguments like yours are partly why women have to fight to be taken seriously still?

If you need a cause argue about FGM, Child slavery , work against county likes that take advantage of vulnerable young people....but for all that is holy don't bang on about a trite argument on semantics that undermines the support a female football team is getting.

You are belittling their achievements by making an issue to detract from what they are doing and frankly ypu are making feminism look like Batshit crazy mantra based soapboxing by people who haven't got enough in their lives to entertain them....please stop it from us in the real world who still have to fight real sexism on a daily basis.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 03/07/2019 00:41

County lines not likes

Oh give over OP! This was 21 years ago. And there is plenty more evidence out there of the men's team being referred to as lions. As a pp pointed out - lionesses are the grafters, the hunters, the ones who keep the pride together - a fantastic image for sports women.

to think the term lionesses is sexist
Chienloup · 03/07/2019 01:00

But yeah, referring to grown women as girls is hideous. Why people can't just use the word women, I have no idea.

tillytrotter1 · 03/07/2019 01:13

British Lions, rugby. Don't some people derive great pleasure in finding offence, it's becoming an Olympic sport.

Tigger365 · 03/07/2019 01:26

And in the the famous words of Beyoncé...who run the world? GIRLS!!

HeddaGarbled · 03/07/2019 01:34

But they don’t, do they? Girls or women or whatever don’t run the world.

Beyonce/Trump?

A woman dress sexy and sing songs/a man making abortion illegal?

You all so funny/stupid?

Smotheroffive · 03/07/2019 01:45

Semantics actually make a massive difference.

You start calling complete strangers 'friends' and the online world is opened up to all sorts of added risks.

Words matters. Its not a case of women can only argue certain points. We can argue any points we're not happy with

I watched this evening new about the england team, not realising for some time they were talking about the England team because ALL i heard was lionesses!!

Call them what they are... Whats the problem with that??!! Its the england team, and they are doing amazing!

They carry the same 'three lions' on the emblem.

Their emblem is the England emblem - lions.

They should be called the England team, is something they have truly earned and im sure proud to be playing for their country at this level.

Symphorien · 03/07/2019 03:14

However, giving a different identity HAS without any doubt increased the profile of the team. Viewing numbers on the BBC have been remarkable and spectator numbers in the stadiums have been excellent. I don't see how the use of a nickname that has caught the attention of millions of people can be seen as sexist, in terms of media coverage, all of England's matches in the later stages have been on BBC One and have had lots of coverage in the online and printed media. In "Official" listings, the team isEngland. Everything else is jargon.

Iliterallycantthinkofanythingq · 03/07/2019 04:00

I meant to vote YABU but accidently pressed YANBU.

YABU and pedantic. They word lion is often associated with the national football team therefore it's only logical to use the female word for the female team.

meuh · 03/07/2019 05:28

OP, I think you have a point worth discussing but you probably should have picked the Feminism board rather than AIBU.

derxa · 03/07/2019 05:40

England men aren't called called lions. There were the Lisbon Lions (Celtic) but not the England Lions. England women should just be England women. yes

derxa · 03/07/2019 06:08

Today the media will call them the 'Losers' so you don't have to worry OP.

RRJR · 03/07/2019 06:14

Oh fgs. Seriously?

medusawashere · 03/07/2019 06:18

As a woman, I love the term Lionesses. Strong and fearless animals who do all of the hunting and take care of business. They have done us proud as a sex. I may have shed a tear or two in pride last night.

ProteinshakesandAntonsAss · 03/07/2019 06:37

Get WOKE!!!

Yeah, no. Woke is a pile of bollocks and I feel sorry for the super woke. As they are, ironically, sleep walking and rarely have a clue what's actually going on.

The term lioness is the female lion. Why is that automatically inferior?

The mens teams are referred to as lions. The womens nickname is lionesses.

OP admits her title was goady to get attention. And actually thinks it's just odd rather than offensive. Since sexism is offensive, she doesnt believe any of this is sexist. Just odd

But then really annoyed that people wont say its sexist. Grin

My favourite line from the OP has to be 'none does you liar'

Reminds me of a 5 year old having a strop.

LadyRannaldini · 03/07/2019 08:03

OP seems to be off looking for her teddy!
It's stupid arguments like this that allows genuine concerns around feminism to be diminished, like the bad old days when any word with black in it wasn't allowed or any word with man in it, manhole covers had to be changed to whatever. So many women must have holes in their feet, the number of times they've shhot themselves there.
When we meet up with a group of friends we tend to use the phrase chaps and chapesses, I must remember to be 'offended' and 'call them out'!

dietcokeandchips · 03/07/2019 08:19

The OP will have a heart attack when she realises the England Women's Rugby Team is called the 'Red Roses ' 🌹

Poppkitty90 · 03/07/2019 08:21

Ffs YABU

isthatapugunicorn · 03/07/2019 08:21

Better than 'Matildas' surely! Besides everyone know's that lions are lazy b'tards and it's the lionesses who do all the hunting and are to be reckoned with!
