or at least its odd as we dont call the men lions we call them england we should call the women England but also adding an ess to a noun an be considered sexist by many. it has just struck me as odd.

Very odd thread

RubberTreePlant · 02/07/2019 21:34

Lionesses are fabulous feminist icons. Both kinds.

Justanotherlurker · 02/07/2019 21:36

please find an article where they are referred to as lions not the three lions

It's also shifting the goalposts somewhat, the fa are trying to promote womens football so lionesses fall under this banner of pushing womens football

Rumboogie · 02/07/2019 21:38

Get a grip

KittyWindbag · 02/07/2019 21:42

YABU this ‘branding’ has helped to capture people’s interest and has helped increase press engagement. ‘England’s women’s football team’ far less catchy and far less cool.

Jemtully · 02/07/2019 21:45

I just took it to be a convenient way of telling the difference between the men and ladies team!
True lionesses are awesome so I see no sexism YABU.

plasterboots · 02/07/2019 21:46

🙄

Justanotherlurker · 02/07/2019 21:50

no the onus is on you to back up what you said

No, the onus is firmly on you and your IDPOL mindset, considering the FA are trying to promote womens football under the banner of 3 Lions and the mens team are consistently referenced as Lions, win lose or draw, why are you trying to make this a "thing" we should be offended about?

greenlloon · 02/07/2019 21:52

the mens team are consistently referenced as Lions, not their not you liar

OP posts:
themueslicamel · 02/07/2019 21:52

OP: Am I bring unreasonable?

Mumsnet: YES!

OP, this is the point where you either concede with good grace or flounce off.

AguerosAngel · 02/07/2019 21:54

themueslicamel · 02/07/2019 21:54

Being, FFS not bring, why can't you edit the bloody posts like Facebook!

Strokethefurrywall · 02/07/2019 21:55

The quality of AIBU subjects has really gone downhill of late.

OP you really should stop advertising your stupidity.

letsrunfar · 02/07/2019 21:55

You can stop worrying about it for another couple of years now!

Justanotherlurker · 02/07/2019 21:58

not their not you liar

So prove it then, the onus is on you at this point, its put up or slinker away and whatabaout.

TabbyMumz · 02/07/2019 22:00

I've heard them called the England squad quite a lot today.

We do call the men lions. Three lions on the shirt. Lionesses is a fabulous name for them, especially as quite a lot of them have long blonde hair.

My DH was just saying he'd seen a joke on Whatsapp where instead of 3 lions on a shirt it was 3 irons on a shirt. That's sexist but funny too. Lionesses isn't remotely sexist.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 02/07/2019 22:02

"We were down to 10 men" according to the manager in his post match interview. Oops! Shock

Contraceptionismyfriend · 02/07/2019 22:03

This is just embarrassing OP. Seriously get a grip.

NameChange9854 · 02/07/2019 22:04

The England men's team have two nicknames (both listed on their wiki page); the lions or the three lions.

For the women's team, it's the lionesses or the three lionesses.

I have noticed that the nickname is used for the women's team is used far more often than for the men's, but got the impression that was deliberate branding on behalf of the women's team.

It's a team nickname. Get over yourself.

lazylinguist · 02/07/2019 22:06

I agree that the women's team are referred to as the lionesses far more often than the men's team are referred to as lions.

But... so what? Why is that sexist? Maybe the team like being referred to as the lionesses. And why have you got a bee in your bonnet about what they call their supporters' clubs? Why should the men's team's supporters club be called the same as the women's?
