or at least its odd as we dont call the men lions we call them england we should call the women England but also adding an ess to a noun an be considered sexist by many. it has just struck me as odd.

OP posts:

Maybe you could have made your point without insulting the glorious game of rugby @Lifecraft.

Maybe you could have made your point without insulting the glorious game of rugby @Lifecraft**

And where's the fun in that?

Alsohuman · 03/07/2019 15:02

😂

Jenniferturkington · 03/07/2019 15:06

I agree op. Just call them England.

princessTiasmum · 03/07/2019 15:10

OMG what next, too much of this political correctness ,it's gone too far imo, they are women, what do you want them to be called

Jenniferturkington · 03/07/2019 15:14

England?

TrixieFranklin · 03/07/2019 15:22

Aren't they the 'Three Lions' and not 'The Lions' because of the cricket? Either way, you're just looking for fault in something where there is none. Complete none issue.

Catinthetwat · 03/07/2019 15:32

I understand your point op, but they don't need to be called the same as the men's team.
Best of setting their own trends and terms. It's not like the men's team are anything to emulate.

Lifecraft · 03/07/2019 15:38

Has anyone asked the players what they think about being called the Lionesses. I've never got the impression that they were anything other than proud to be the Lionesses and I've heard various interviews with the players where they refer to themselves and their team mates as Lionesses.

Or are the players in the same category as women who take their husband's name upon marriage or stay home to look after their kids.....they've been brainwashed by the patriarchy and don't know what's good for them. Grin

Smotheroffive · 03/07/2019 22:11

I would say again that they are surely proud to be the england team, and doing amazing!

Insulting other women by trying to shut them down, calling other womens opinions BS, to be laughed at and sneered at...

Massively misses the point, that calling complete and utter strangers 'friends' makes for increasing risks for women and girls online.

But hey, whats in a name, huh?!

Well everything. The whole businessworld and all.social interactions are built upon hidden suppositions.

So its the opposite of BS. Worrying that so many still have scales obscuring the view.

Smotheroffive · 03/07/2019 22:16

Few in numbers is another irrelevant argument. All of womanhood, bar the very few, have ridden on the backs of the few that did the fighting for rights and votes, and action against highly prevalent domestic violence against women who benefit from those who lost their lives.

Words are key, and definitely worth taking the time to understand their underlying meaning/assertions.

If you're bored by this best you go off to bed and rest. Go do something else that does interest you, instead of wasting your time being bored and negative

Smotheroffive · 05/07/2019 11:28

Jenny Murray using it today. Hmm

What's the matter with saying the England team.

The England team, men, is no longer your title alone.

Gth1234 · 05/07/2019 16:20

Loads of sporting examples, if you want them.

Leeds Rhinos
Nottingham Panthers
Exeter Chiefs - not animals, but American Indians.

Personally, I think it's insulting to disavow gender. Why on earth not actresses? Why not call our monarch King Elizabeth 2.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2019 16:25

I think it sounds stronger, better, fiercer and prouder than "England" TBH.

AverageMummy · 06/07/2019 14:50

@LadyBumclock it literally tells you how many have voted so the percentages are very easy to transfer in to numbers. Perhaps you thought no one had voted since I commented?!

AverageMummy · 06/07/2019 14:53

I hear people saying “we are playing the wasps this weekend” - it has never occurred to me as being disrespectful as I am assuming Bath men’s rugby club chose the nickname themselves? Certainly doubt it is sexist

Mousetolioness · 06/07/2019 14:58

Lionesses isn't sexist IMO but I'm
more glad we're unlikely to have to put up with all the guff about the team's HABS.

meuh · 06/07/2019 15:32

Personally I would be in favour of the teams being called England men and England women, to avoid the women's team sounding like some kind of less serious sub-brand.

meuh · 06/07/2019 15:33

Bath and Wasps are different teams Wink

TruthOnTrial · 06/07/2019 16:35

So, in the example of wasps, is the women's wasps team called 'waspees' or 'waspettes' or something? What would be the equivalent.

Surely there are just wondering teams of wasps, one male one female.

Like there are now two England teams? One female one male.

TruthOnTrial · 06/07/2019 16:36

*wondering???
...two...

meuh · 06/07/2019 17:07

It's called Wasps Ladies, but often just referred to as Wasps: www.waspsfc.co.uk/teams/6682/match-centre/0-4518753

Gogreen · 06/07/2019 17:44

This is one of the most pathetic threads I’ve ever seen.....

sunshinefinally · 06/07/2019 17:51

What @Gogreen said.....

Hirsutefirs · 06/07/2019 18:00

Let’s call them “The Racists.”

At least it’s not sexist!

Apologies to all the justified complainers about this awful post.
